How bad does it get? I'm kind of scared to go into nursing after reading a few posts about how cut throat it is.

I think it just depends on where you work. There are definitely more people posting about bullying, but that doesn't mean it is more prevelent.

Bullying?! WHAT!? I have never once been or seen anybody else bullied in nursing school. That's ridiculous to even think about.

I've never seen any bullying anywhere. As far as school goes, everyone seems to help each other. I can't tell you how many times someone reminded me concerning all the hoops you have to jump through.
But I'm curious, are you talking about the career of nursing or nursing school?

bear in mind that if someone has a complaint, they will tell the story 25 times; a good experience, only 5. the perenially-aggrieved are always with us and always willing to whine. most of the time, when more details come out, the "victim" really is at fault and dodging responsibility. i don't want to hear "you're blaming the victim!" or "nurses eat their young!" about these people anymore. ever.
after that, consider the following: "no one can make you feel inferior without your consent." ~eleanor roosevelt and "no one will chew on you if you're tough." ~ anon.
life with humans is life with humans. most people are good, or at least neutral. the ones that aren't, aren't, and you would need to learn to coexist with them no matter what you did. you can do so. it's part of being grown up.
good luck! welcome to the profession!

Bullying is usually a matter of perception. Many people will always find fault with all their jobs and coworkers. It's never their fault. And they take everything personally.Don't treat your charge nurse or manager like the teacher on the playground and whine to them if you don't like how the others play.Be a grown up.

I think it happens, but honestly - I'm a new grad, working my first job as a nurse, and I am surrounded by supportive people. Great folks. :)

There will always be bullying especially in nursing because there will always be a loser nurse who hates her job or is just damn right mean and need someone to take their anger out.
I believe if you were able to put yourself through nursing school and pass the NCLEX, NO ONE has the right to bully you or make you feel inferior.
I am a new grad and have been bless to have found a good group of nurses who rally around me, but there are 2 nurses on my unit who decided they wanted to bully me because I was new. Instead of letting it get to me, I stood my ground and gave them the same disrespectful attitude they gave me.
AND GUESS WHAT?
They realized that I was not going to back down and now they leave me alone. In fact, they can barely look me directly in the eyes anymore. They tend to isolate themselves from everyone which is good cause no one really cares.
A great advice someone told me was stay away from the negative nurses because they will drag you down. You can't make everyone like you. So just surround yourself with positive nurses who you can dependent on.
Everyday I go to work, I sit with the nurses who are always laughing and smiling. Happy nurses really are contagious and its a great way to start the day!

I have seen loads of bullying in nursing school. It's the nature of humans in a schoolyard. They build themselves up by picking on anyone who seems odd or weak. It's done out of insecurity. The best thing to do is stay as far away from the participants as possible.
I agree with the above comment about staying away from negative nurses. Gravitate towards the positive people in your environment. Not all humans are evolved or mature, not even nurses.
