Is this average?

I had an appointment with an administrator of an LVN program in my area and found out the program will cost $25,000 including books, two scrub outfits etc. Is this normal? I'm fairly certain I will qualify for financial aide but the cost still concerns me because I will more than likely have to pay a portion of it. The chances of me getting a loan are slim and none as I just went through a divorce and my ex is letting our house foreclose.

How much is the average? This is the first of only two I know of in my area and the lady I met with wasn't very friendly. She was the kind that made you feel like she didn't really want to help you out.

I will not get into a lot of back and forth messiness, but I must say, EthnicBeaty that I am SOO Happy to see that I am not the only poster that feels comments/posts made by The Commuter are often not only condescending and rude, but also very intrusive and tactless. I thought I was just overly sensitive, but now I know it's not just me. Thank you....back to the subject at hand, I am attending LPN school in Ohio for about $9,000 and I think that is expensive, but it all depends on what you want, and what you are willing to do to get it.

No one can tell you what is best for you, pray about it, and go from there....good luck!

If you feel this way why didn't you address it in the threads of yours? I don't think it is intrusive since the information was put on the world wide web. Actually it was good, proactive advice, imo. I was surprised that Ethnic Beauty was insulted because I enjoy her posts but my first thoughts were also about stopping foreclosure so you can imagine my shock when she responded that she was a Realtor. Anyhoo I guess thats neither here nor there.

The Commuter might not be all about cyber hugs and flowers but she has worked really hard to be where she is, with very little support, and I think much of her advice is quite good.

I have to AGREE! I knpw that she is ALWAYS the 1st to answer any of my questions....it doesnt matter how silly or where on the site it is at!

I will have to say that I was also shocked she was a realtor that was "cool" with foreclosing on her house, but if that is what she wants to do then it is her choice.

I do have to give my :twocents: that I think wayyyyy to many people get into school & just dont have their lives together & then fail. I dont think they mean to but I really think you have to have ALL your ducks in a row before you jump into the HUGE commitment of nursing school

I don't believe for one second that I made any statement saying that the advice given by Commuter was not sound, I did however say that Ethnic Beaty did not ask for that advice, and her question wasn't geared toward her personal matters.

It may be suprising that EthnicBeaty is allowing a foreclosure on her home, but it's her matter to handle entirely. I personally have read posts by The Commuter, including this one, and I personally am sometimes taken aback by the tone of her responses. However accurate they may be, and they often times are, it's the delivery that I made mention of, and I hadn't mentioned it before as I said in my previous post because I thought it was just me.

I'm sure The Commuter has worked very hard to get where she is, no one has questioned that, and she should be commended for her accomplishments, but so have many others, also without support so I'm not quite sure what your point was there. Again, it's not what's being said, it's how it comes across to the reader, or person being spoken to. It's a dead issue, opinions are just that. I had one, I gave it.

Wow! I actually think it is rude to post a question, and then attack the people who respond.

I haven't found The Commuter's posts offensive at all! But then again, I think a little common sense and a decent layer of skin goes a long way.

You many not be the only poster who feels she is rude, but I'd say you're one of the few...

ETA: To the OP, yes that's a lot of money for an LPN program. My RN cost me about 2k.

Yes I think it is pretty expensive. The LPN program that I plan to go cost about 4,500.

This is good cost. I wish we were 4,500...I would pay out of pocket. You should see what Dr's pay for med school.

my program was just under 4k at a vocational/technical school. Also check with financial aid bc often there are programs u may qualify for that arent related to ur FAFSA. I was able to get a financial need based scholarship to cover tuition based on my income at the time of enrollment (not the previous years taxes). They also had payment plans. Vocational schools and community colleges are usually cheaper than private schools. Those private schools prey on ppl who are desperate to get in bc they dont want to wait a long time to start school and can often get in immediately with one of those schools.

$25,000 is about the average tuition rate for private LVN programs located in Southern California, more specifically the Los Angeles area. Casa Loma College, with locations in Van Nuys and Hawthorne, charges $20,000 for their full-time program and $22,000 for their part-time program. In addition, Casa Loma College is planning to raise their tuition to $27,000 across the board very soon. American Career College, in Los Angeles, charges $25,000 for their LVN program. Preferred College of Nursing, located in North Hollywood, charges nearly $20,000 for their LVN program. Concorde Career Institute charges nearly $20,000 for their LVN program. The list goes on and on.....

It is a great deal of money to invest, but the student is able to bypass waiting lists and prerequisites.

Well, most people who would happily attend a school or anything else for that matter without getting the information they need are pretty stupid. Who would spend $25,000 without even knowing what they are paying for? I don't know if it's just me or what, but all of the posts I have posted you have posted back something either condescending or rude. And not to sound rude myself but I posted about my house forclosing to give insight as to what my credit looks like, not to get advice on selling it. My ex husband and I are both real estate agents, there's more to my situation than I've put on the internet as this is not the subject of converstion.

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong about you being condescending or rude, I know it's hard to get a feel for people's tone just reading what they have to say but I just had to put what I felt out there.

I can speak for Commuter and say that this poster is not rude at all, but has been very helpful, invaluable and insightful to most of us that seek advice. I am always elated to read what this person has to contribute to our thoughts and experiences; so keeping this in my personal mind, I think that the comment was more of food for thought than anything else. But, also, from experience, nursing school on any level is competitive because the earning potential is so great for both, LPNs and RNs alike that these counselors treat everyone the same (unfortunately). Many people are on waiting lists for the RN program from 2-5 years, and therefore, have opted to become LPNs to allow themselves into the arena. I do think that the cost is great...I went to a community college, and that was about $6000...but my job paid for the course for me, and I didn't pay a dime.

I think you're very knowledgeable and helpful...

But that's just my opinion.

As far as cost, I don't even know what mine was exactly. I just know I took out a loan that covered it and then some, and now I have to pay it off;)
