Is anyone out there having a hard time finding a job?

Published

Hi,

I live in Arizona, and have been a nurse for five years. I cant find a job. Does anyone have any idea whats going on with hospitals right now?

Specializes in LTC.

Just curious, are you still employed or looking for a different facility? Anyway, LVN here in CA having a terrible time finding my first job.

I am unemployed. Havent worked since April. RN in AZ.

LPN in Michigan. Took NCLEX in May. Worked 10 weeks at a summer camp; now can't find a job. Correction: I can FIND plenty of jobs, I just can't get HIRED to any of them.

Specializes in Legal, Ortho, Rehab.

RN-Florida, 3 years LPN, 3 years RN. S/P traveller...ran out of job options...came back to FL...no jobs! Finally got my old job back...so yea, it's not you, it's the economy.

RN for 6 years in Colorado and can't find a job either. Just signed up with an agency.

Wow, I am sorry to hear that this is going on. I have applied, and applied, and interviewed about 4 times for the same hospital which is one of the few hospitals that been gracious enough to respond to my apps. They all said the that I interviewed well, and they like me, but the hired from within or they hired someone with more experience.

I am an LPN NC 3 yrs...currently work a FT job at a LTC facility that has been cutting our nsg hours since mid july....had 2 job interviews today for prn/part time positions but the 2nd place has to wait for my drug test and background check to come back before they let me know anything about if they really want to hire me and what the pay would be. I am having to find something on the side to make ends meet since my checks have gotten so much smaller b/c of the cutbacks. The 1st place I interviewed at today was nice...but the pay is almost 4 bucks less than what I make now but they offer some killer benefits and I wouldnt have to pull any doubles b/c they use agency nurses for that if absolutely needed. The 2nd place...probably pays more b/c its owned by a corp instead of county like the 1st one...but I still have a few days to decide. My boss at my FT place is not willing to work w/ me on my schedule at all and I am the ONLY FT 2nd shift nurse she has since the other 2 quit. ...I think thats why shes being so stubborn...shed rather lose the one nurse she has left rather than work something else out with me. If it wasnt for me having so much vacatioin time to use up..Id take one of the full time tracks offered to me and tell them they could have my spot.

We're in a recession. Hospitals are cutting back. Many have closed due to financial problems. Depending on the area you live in, you might have too many nurses. You might have to relocate or work in an area that you don't prefer.

I worked for a health plan for 14 years and was "rightsized." I tried the hospital route and had the same experience as others. I think some hospitals are having a tough time. I am trying to figure out with all this health reform where the new jobs will be. A health care jobs report I saw on NurseZone said the top job growth areas for nurses are in home health, schools, and physicians offices. Chronic care is expected to be big so a few of my friends from my old job are getting our Chronic Care Professional certification. While I'm working on that I'm sending out some resumes to some LTC facilities, but been there done that, but hopefully I can back into a health plan.

I've been looking for a new job myself. My employer cut some of the hours of the nursing staff which changed some of us to part-time status a while back. Some of the staff fought this through outside agencies and were given the shifts back to maintain their full-time status. When this hour reduction took place I was already inclined to think that it was time to consider a move. Because I did not have an explicit need for the additional hours or the health coverage at the time, I was simply glad to be relieved of the obligation of working an additional day at a job I had grown to dislike. I also don't have a lot of faith in the "system" as far as fighting something management has decided to do without feeling the repercussions in some form.

Things have changed for me since then and I do have a need for additional hours (not overtime just a full 36-40/wk) and I could definitely use full benefits. Now I could get additional hours once again at my original job and most likely be moved back to full-time but I really do not want to go there with them since I'd most assuredly have to finish another 90days to be benefits eligible again and always wonder when they may decide they feel like cutting the position once again. I've been looking to replace my job with a full-time one elsewhere. While I've not had problems finding a job offer; I have yet to be offered anything other than a part-time or PRN position. So at this point I am juggling shifts with three employers to work full-time hours and of course I have no benefits. When I realize my hours for the week are what would be overtime if I worked for only one place it frustrates me.:hdvwl:

The medical help wanted ads for this city are a fraction of the size they were a few years ago. Perhaps companies are advertising less to save money with the economy as it is. I definitely think I am seeing a pattern with what seems to be "stacking" PRN and part time positions to avoid having full-time employees to pay benefits out to. It looks like the next step for me in trying to locate a F/T position is going to be venturing out of my comfort zone a bit.

I am(LPN) in California but planning to move in Michigan for the reason of not finding a job here. I have relatives there and invited me to try.
