Just venting a bit. But also curious to see if other agency's are canceling their staffing a lot through this month of December. I know that December is usually a bad month....census is low, their own staffers are getting canceled as well. Just curious to see if anyone else is getting canceled like me?

I just started as an agency RN in MD two weeks ago. I have only been cancelled once so far. The staffers at my agency did say around the holidays you get cancelled more bc reg. staff is trying to pick up more shifts for extra money or the census is down.

Hello all,
Appreciated reading your comments about getting cancelled on agency assignments. I am a retirement age RN working private duty home health for an agency. Yesterday I received a call from the agency saying "sorry but we will need to find another assignment for you....the parents of your patient(19 years old) have requested that we arrange for a nurse who is CLOSER TO THE PATIENT'S AGE....". Bummer! Any of you have this experience?
Best wishes to all. Your fellow agency nurse

i know this is old news, but a lot of travel and agency nurses that i have talked with have been cancelled in the month of december and january due to the hospial fiscal buget and the poor economy. many nurses from the west coast to the east coast has lost their contracts and if they are luck...still have jobs. i know a lot of nurses are unemployed or using their savings just to get buy until another position opens up. with the many nursing agency and travel companies, a lot of nurses are competing for a travel assignment. one company which will be nameless has told me that if you have more then five years experience...you may land the job. i know some nursing travel agencies are combining companies to save the companies from closing. for the many travel nurses, good luck and let's hope the economy will improve.

I actually contacted an agency wanting to pick up hours with them if possible. The nurse recruiter that I spoke with stated that all of the hospitals in my area are on a hiring freeze and that they are not accepting any agency profiles. She stated that this was due to the bad economy. I was very surprised at that and asked this recruiter how these hospitals are staffing their floors and units. Her answer was, "they work short staffed." I hope to God that I am not an inpatient in a hospital anytime soon.

I signed up with an agency 1 month ago, went to orientation at one hospital tuesday and was scheduled to work tonight for the first time...got a call at 5p saying census is down and could i work 11-7, they will call at 9p
Probably better for me since i never passed meds with a computerized mars..this way i can get the hang of it before any meds due at 5 or so..

You are not alone. This is what I don't understand, Pres. Obama says that we are in a nursing shortage. HELLO... there are many RNs returning to work d/t the poor economy and many new grads fludding the market this May. The job market is soooo saturated with RNs that it is very difficult to find a permanent job little own a hosp that is hiring from an agency.
thank goodness i have a full time job and if someone else is only part time and they worked then its okay with me, and i did get cancelled tonight..oh well maybe in 2 weeks they will need me

I was cancelled 3 days the week before last LTC, last week only worked 2 days during the week. I am completely shocked I haven't had a shift on a weekend now making it three weekends in a row. I signed with another agency all hospital work to fill the gap - but I am not getting shifts from there yet either. I use to be able to pretty much pick and choose - not anymore.
What do you think is happening? Are people not getting sick or is that the nurses that don't get cancelled are working their butts off?
I applied to a HH agency and was told that I would be per diem. They would call me the day before if they had a visit for me to go to.
In speaking to the bookkeeper at the agency, she said they are busy and have two somewhat fulltime RNs and the rest are LVNs. So I'm thinking they utilize their LVNs to the fullest and RNs (more $$$) only when necessary.

You should speak with your staffing coordinator and offer to go out on LVN level calls at the LVN rate of pay if you really want to work that much. RNs work LVN level cases all the time, but they usually get the LVN rate, not always, but usually. Just ask.
