I know we've all seen the threads about those classmates that makes us want to stick a knife in our head, but I'm at wits end at this point. We're only halfway through the program, but the amount of noise, drama, and childishness from some of them is giving me headaches.
There's the girl that has a question every three minutes who also has the family member who has had every known disease. She's also the one who has always says, "Ok, I thought the book said _________ so on the test what's the answer going to be?"
There are the two girls that think they're cool and in some kind of reality show but actually come across as spoiled, overly needy brats like the trash you'd see on Jersey Shore. They're the loud ones that always have to comment in manners such as "WOW, OMG, or WOAH." They actually say the letters O, M, G.
Finally, there's the girl who thinks we're all a close knit group who is seemingly unaware of the cliques and factions going on. She's our designated classleader who doesn't lead. I'm not sure why a school program needs a student leader, but that's an issue I can't change I suppose.
I've been yelled at, cursed out, spit on, and fought with, but the amount of drama that I mentioned above is far worse than anything I ever experienced from drunks and crackheads on the streets. I know people are diverse, but I can't even stand going to class anymore because it all needs to be reigned in.
drama, drama, drama!!!
somedays i feel like i am back in hs!
i can manage the "irritating classmates" and their quirks, i am sure i have those quirks too, but i find myself having a hard time with the drama. i will not get involved with that and i stay away from those who seem to "thrive" on it. i really have enough on my plate with school. i do not have time for he said/she said.
i am always willing to help others, but i will not come seek you out and hold your hand and make you study, make you go practice your skills in the open lab. it is not my job to walk you thru nursing school.
so now i am a *****...and you have made sure to tell everyone who will listen to you just that and how i won't help you. did you also tell them that you have been invited to every single study group, that you have been told everytime a group of us will be in the open lab to practice but you choose not to attend. did you tell them about the one time you did show up for nln extra credit practice testing you did not bring your lap top and just wrote down all the answers and proceeded to hand them out to anyone who wanted them. yeah i did not think so. i work hard and study hard for my grades. if your not willing to do the same then i cannot help you. so if that makes me a ***** then so be it! i am a *****!!
my purpose in going back to school and getting into nursing is to better my life, secure my future. to do something i love to do. i really did not expect this kind of behavior, this backstabbing drama. maybe it was silly of me to think that those who have come this far to make it into this program would have some maturity and focus...some professionalisim.
thank you for letting me vent

oh boy, i agree! it is like high school all over again. i had that same problem. i make great grades yet i have been accused of cheating (but my professor knew the truth), and other stupid stuff. i even had a "friend" that even purposely left me at home when patient pickup time came, when i had no car. and i took that as a sign that she wanted me to fail. so from then on, i completely ignored her, buckled down in my studies, and took a taxi to clinicals for the entire 2nd half of the semester (thank god i had money saved!) but let me tell you about a little thing called karma.... all this drama happened this past fall. this month was hesi, you have only 2 times to take it or you will not participate in pinning or graduate with the rest of the class. all those haters (except one) and the "friend" didn't pass it, even after the 2nd time. and me? passed it the 1st time with a 959 in 1.5 hours with 160 questions. so... i'm thrilled to be able to stand at pinning and graduate knowing that god made sure that their words that came out of their mouths (or even their actions) came into existence in their lives... not mine, whom it was originally intended for. god don't like ugly. sucks to be them! lol
There are so many irritating people in class.
1. The guy who has 1,528,362,983 questions to ask about everything. Of course you should ask questions if you don't understand something, but when you spend 25 minutes asking questions and prolonging the lecture, it's just annoying. E-mail the questions to the instructor or ask after the lecture is over. The rest of us just want to get out on time.
2. The LPNs (some, not all) who think they know it all and are so much better than everyone else. There's a little group of them who sit together and yell out the answers before anyone else gets the chance to answer. Just shut up. And quit making rude comments and giggling if someone gets an answer wrong.
3. The girl who lets nursing consume her entire life. Sure, we all joke that we have no life while in school, but in reality we make time for ourselves. Whenever you ask her how she's doing or how her weekend/break/whatever was, she always says how the semester's making her so stressed or that she didn't have any fun because all she did was study. She really brings everyone down by always complaining when we're all saying what a great time we had during our time off. I'm all for putting in the effort and working hard, but it can't be good for you to be that into it.
4. The girl who gives me weird looks when I tell it like it is. Please stop looking at me like I just threw a kitten against the wall just because I say what's on my mind. If something going on just isn't right, I'm gonna say it. If an instructor's behavior towards me is rude and inappropriate, I'm gonna say it. I see those looks you give me. Stop expecting me to be Susie Sunshine all the time.
5. The students who don't want to speak up for themselves or go against an instructor because "they can fail me". Hey, kids, they can't fail you because they don't like you. It's pretty darn hard to fail someone if their grades are all passing. And it looks pretty suspicious to give a student usat at the end of clincals when you've never discussed or documented any problems with the student in clincals. If you all continue to let things slide, their behavior will continue and nothing will ever improve.
Wow - yelled at, cursed at, spit on ?! The instructors ought to be able to teach professionalism - that should be part of the behavior of a Nursing Student - part of the 'training'. Maybe the instructors ought to make this clear. I am trying to get into a Nursing program - but have been a dental hygienist for 19 years. No matter where I have worked there is always, always, always - some kind of drama. I have learned to control my mouth and my responses so these crazy folks can't get any further ammunition from me. I walk away. I ignore. I bite my tongue - alot. I 'yes' people to death as I slowly walk away. But spiiting at ?! Come on. That's kindergarten - right? And shouldn't these potential Nurses be aware of the fact that disease that travels in saliva ? That's just dirty and childish. I think the instructor should know and address it. Professionalism goes a long way out in the 'real world' and - obviously - needs to be defined and taught to those who intend to be medical professionals. I feel bad for your circumstance - but I'd bring it up to some higher up staff. Good luck !

This. *high five* You exactly described how it is for me. Now I'm considered "aggressive" .. Y'know what? They can have fun being stomped on in 'the real world'.. I just happen to have a back bone!
Bluemushroom, you are awesome! I would have loved to be classmates with someone like you! We are totally on the same page with your #2,4 & 5!
Aw, gee. Thanks! :) I'm sure that if we agree on those things, we'd get along great as classmates.

I've always found it odd that the ones who stick up for themselves have been called "aggressive" or much worse things. It's good that you don't take anyone's crap. Keep on being "aggressive"!
The funny thing is, everyone at school sees me as the quiet, shy, and "sweet" girl, so they're all shocked when I say the things I say.

I feel you on both of these. I had to switch clinical sites one semester because of speaking my mind about the lack of guidance and time available. I was better off for it, even if it led to me having to get "disciplined" for being "unprofessional". In the real world, there is still basic respect. I'm not afraid to tell my feelings and perspective in a calm, collected, and tasteful manner now and I won't be then!
We have someone in my class that gets annoyed with everyone who asks a question. She has even been known to leave class early when it doesn't proceed at a pace suitable/fast enough for her. Yet, when she has a question or wants to share something she has no problem with monopolizing the class. So, I figure she feels so superior that only her questions/comments are worthy. Anyway she is a nasty piece of work. I'll be glad not to hear her grumbling in the back of the room -- two years too long.
I cannot imagine she has a tolerance level sufficient to function as a nurse working with difficult patients. If her resume ever comes across my desk, she won't be hired. People who can't control their contempt for others are poison in the workforce.
This was a fun topic to read. Thanks all who posted! Sure brought back memories...I haven't been in school for 10 years, and yet I swear I went to class with the same dumb-donkey people. Guess some things never change. Unfortunately you won''t really get rid of them...the one's who graduate [or those like them] will be working with you someday.

Hmmm it's creepy how everything u describe here seems to be like the class I have now...we're also half way till graduation. Do u perhaps go to nursing school somewhere in NY?
anyways, just forget about them and do ur own business. :) it's normal in every school, u'll find someone whom u doesn't like.
