iPhone

Any idea if the iPhone will run some of these all-PC nursing PDA programs. Being the Mac junkie that I am, if I get a PDA it will have to be the iPhone with all the jazz...unless the programs are not compatible.

It's not out for a few weeks so I am not sure all the details.

What programs do I need for my first year in nursing school?

Thanks all ~ Bridget

Hey Bridget,

I'm a mac girl too. Unfortunately in all of my research most of the medical programs are for the Palm OS or Pocket PC. Apple doesn't seem to be allowing 3rd party software yet, but this was in the NY Times 6/4:

"One potentially crucial factor in determining the iPhone's success that has yet to be clarified by the company: how willing is Apple to permit independent software vendors to develop programs for the iPhone? When he introduced the phone in January, Jobs seemed unwilling to permit outside software development. He said that opening that door would tend to raise both security and stability issues that were unacceptable in the wireless handset market. Last week, however, at the D: All Things Digital conference, he seemed to relent. He said Apple was looking for ways to make it possible for developers to create software for the iPhone.

A person briefed on Apple's plans said that at its software developer conference this month, Apple intends to announce that it will make it possible for developers of small programs written for the Macintosh to easily convert them to run on the iPhone."

Of course that implies that software would have to already exist for mac before it was converted for the iphone and sadly I don't think it does (there are a couple programs for Doctor's office management).

Of course hopefully someone will come up with an emulator eventually but like most programs for mac (that are not graphic etc.) it could take a few years.

Unfortunately I think my husband will get the iphone and I will settle for a PDA until they catch up ;-)

At least the PDA's are way cheaper....

good luck

Rumor has it that my school is having us get PDA's this fall. Fellow Mac Users: how much trouble will I have syncing with my PowerBook? Has anyone had any experience with this?

1. I want an iphone so bad I can taste it, just because it's so damn cute.

2. Syncing with Palm OS and Mas OS works fine for me.

Later,

Richard

I'm an admitted (almost) MAC convert. I say "almost" because I haven't gotten a mac yet. Im actually waiting for the new Lepord OS to come out in october so its preinstalled in the Macbook I want.

Anyway, I hear you guys, I soooo wish the nursing software was set up for iphone I was actually thinking that if it turns out that I need a PDA for school I'd definately get a iphone.

I can't imagine it will take toooooo long for an emulator application to come out that will all you to run Pocket PC and/or Palm OS programs. There are emulators already for Pocket PC so all the $$$ people have invested in Palm apps won't be wasted and they will be more willing to convert to the Pocket PC.

yay - fellow mac lovers :w00t: I thought I was alone in this (nursing school) world! After years of glitches when sending papers on-line, downloading lecture notes which look completely different from everyone else's, and blank stares when asking teachers/fellow students for help, I finally have a forum to turn to when disaster strikes. It's good to know you're out there! Happy studying !! :typing

Mac lover here too...have an iBook and an old G4 Desktop. Works fine with Palm. I don't know why ANYONE would purchase a Windows PC. I worked in Graphic Design and tech support for a bit so I tend to get a lot of computer questions from my friends. My answer to their question is now, "Get a Mac."

I have both a Dell and a G4 iBook, and while I salivate at the thought of the iPhone, I bet it will be half a year before I can run all my Windows Mobile [Dell Axim] medical / nursing software on the iPhone, if ever.

If they do release iPhone versions of the software, I have a suspicion that Skyscape will require the PDA software to be re-purchased. I doubt it will be a free upgrade.

Sigh.

I'm a nursing student and have been a loyal Mac user since '85! My advice is not to worry about iPhone compatability with PDA software for nursing. Get yourself a PDA now - it will be an invaluable tool in whatever you are doing. As for the iPhone, I too cannot wait to get my hands on one, but I have learned never to buy any first generation product. Trust me, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation iPhones will have great features that the first won't, and maybe this will create a price differential so it's a little more affordable. As for PDAs, all Palm products sync perfectly with Mac OSX, both PPC and Intel. I'm going to give myself an iPhone as a graduation present, and in the meantime I am SO happy that I bought a Palm PDA when I started school.
