Hello,

I am a recent graduate as a medical assistant. I am in the process of starting my internship, which is required by my school. I should of started today only to be told I needed to have a physical and PPD done first. You would of thought I would be told well in advance. Anyways.....

I've been a stay at home mother for 4.5 years, I have a 4.5 year old son and an 18 month old daughter. I did the medical assistant program to enter myself back into the workforce. I'm looking to further my career in the medical field as a nurse. I was wondering if anyone has done an associates degree in nursing online? Any help would be appreciated. I've done research but found nothing solid.

The colleges where I live require a year in prerequisites before I can even enter the 2 year program.

I'm a MA going into nursing. :)

I just want to say to be please be leery of any schools that offer an online nursing degree.

*Make sure the school is accredited, and accepted by your state's Board of Nurses. (You want to be able to sit for the NCLEX after graduating!)

*Make sure the school has HANDS ON clinicals...at hospitals, etc, not online "virtual clinicals".

That's all I can think of right now...lol

I am a CMA as well going back for RN. I am able to take my theory courses online, but how can you get your clinical hours in? One must put in so many hours prior to taking the NCLEX I believe. I wouldn't know how that works wiith a complete program online. Good luck with your internship. You'll get some great experience!

I am also a CMA. I am researching going into school for LVN. The school I am going to is a public school so it is only $1100.00. But I work the same hours as the school operates. Although a requirement is to hold a job with 32 hours or more, they hold their classes when most MA's work. It doesn't make sense.

So I also need advice about schools. What tests I should prepare for? What study guides are out there to prepare for an entrance exam? What do I need to know?

If someone could share this with me I would appreciate it. I am sure that somewhere in all these forums are all my answers but honestly I don't have time to hunt through this website, between kids, husband, work, and this darn flu I just want to be in bed. So please don't think I am being lazy but if you have the answer's please share.

I'm also toying with this idea as well. Trying to decide if I should go CNA or MA route? I'm thinking of the MA, I am also a stay-at-home mom of 3.5 years, so I just need to make a decision which one to choose and how to pay for it.

If it were me I'd go the MA route, what a CNA can do is limited as is an MA but a MA is above a CNA. CNA's work mostly in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and long term-care centers. You deal with the patient bathing, cleaning, cooking (if assisted)etc. etc. Medical assistant you can draw blood, give injections (when instructed), help with minor surgeries, etc, etc.

As far as how to pay for it, I qualified for a pell grant, plus I took out a loan through Sallie Mae. Don't dwell on how to pay for it, if that's what you want to do then do it. People make the mistake of thinking of money to much and that is why some never get ahead. And you don't have to start paying off your loan until 6 monthhs after you finish school. And the minimum payment is like $50.00 a month. I say go for it!:D

Thanks! I went up to the College today to start the application process. So, I guess I made up my mind :). I'm going to fill out the financial aid paperwork and see what I do and don't qualify for. Wow! It was really funny, because I had my daughter with me and I just thought I would be getting information about the school, and I took entrance exams and was filling out paperwork for admission to the school. :rotfl:

Congratulations and good luck! I have to go over to my college and do the same thing for the nursing program. I'm going to do my basics and what other courses I can online so I guess it won't be so bad. So I can work as well,and by the time my other half is done with school I can do actual classes for clinicals etc. Let me know how things go for you.

I'm going on my 13th year of being a CNA. I've worked for many doctors, clinics, and the last 9 years at two different hospitals. I make $16 and hour plus differentials. It's all I've done sence highschool. I've never seen any MAs around here even get jobs past doctors offices. Advice about school? Look into your local community college and check out there financial aid office. You probably qualify for a pell grant. Flexible work can be found at your local hospital for a decent wage (tuition re-imbursement also) and you'll work right next to the CNAs.
