looking for information about correctly recording the intake of residents.
we have been including in our intake:
--- liquids - water, juice, coffee, tea, milk, soda, broth;
--- foods that are liquid at room temperature - ice cream, sherbet, popsicles;
--- foods such as gelatin desserts (like jell-o), puddings, liquids that we have added a thickening powder, and 'magic cups'.
"jane" has told the cnas that applesauce and other pureed fruits should be included when recording the resident's intake.
was pureed fruit many years ago included in intake or was pureed fruit added to intake in the last several years and i missed the change/update information?
i have searched the web, didn't find anything that read to include pureed fruit, but then again did not find anything that read not to include pureed fruit.
when recording of intake amounts, are pureed fruits included or not included?
your feedback would be appreciated.

I was taught to not add anything that doesn not liquify at room temp.
Have had clinicals at 3 hospitals, one with Magnet status and I have never seen fruits/applesauce as a liquid. If they went down that road, you would also have to include cream of wheat, sloppy oatmeal etc..

I've never heard of applesauce or pureed fruits being counted as fluid intake. BUT cream of wheat was listed as a choice on the "liquid diet" list I had in the hospital 4 yrs ago when I was hospitalized! Go figure....

We also include cream of wheat on a full liquid diet. I think it has more to do with how little moisture is absorbed after cooking though. Ive always had a hard time accepting milk products as liquid though since they do curdle in the stomach and form solids after consumed. Go figure though.
We DO NOT include pureed or applesauce on a liquid diet.

If it doesn't melt at room temperature then it's not a liquid.
We also include on intake soups such as tomato or cream of chicken. Also, we include creamers for coffee.

Hi, I don't know if this Q is on the right place but anyway here it goes.
Q: Is mash potato considered liquid?
Q1: If so, must it be added as additional fluid intake to a client who is in an I/O monitoring ? (eg. Tonsilitis patient)

Read your facility policy. It doesn't matter what we or anyone else says. Your policy, as long as it doesn't fly in the face of accepted practice, is what you need to go by.
MY policy says only those residents on a fluid restriction will be on I&O....that's it.
We had a complaint survey with the DPH. The surveyor asked my why someone with a GTube wasn't on I&O. I told her it's signed off in the MAR and the person always got the same amount in a 24 hour period. She asked what the policy was and said...OKAY...you're following your policy.

No mashed potato is NOT considered a liquid. In order to be considered a liquid the item must "melt" at room temp.
To the OP, I have been in the LTC setting for over 20 years and I have never worked at a facility that lists applesauce and other pureed foods as part of the fluid intake.
But I guess it doesn't matte now to the OP..the post is from 2006 :lol:
