If I work at a hospital and have had an inmate as a pt., if I were interested in writing to him once he is released and he asked me too, could i legally do this.? I have known nurses to marry inmates that were former patients. As long as there is nothing inappropriate while he is a patient, once he is released am I free to write or whatever? Please this is very important if anyone knows the "rules" about this situation. I don't understand how this could be a problem. It seems to be the same situation as if a regular patient was to contact a former nurse and pursue a relationship which I have known several nurses who met their husbands as former patients. All opinions aside about "it's a bad idea to get involved with a manipulative inmate" I'm only seeking factual info. Thanks alot.

Sorry, no factual info here... Just a "what the heck for?"
JMHO here, but definitely risky, & certainly unprofessional.
Why not try a local singles bar instead?

Factual only okay - I doubt that it is illegal but like above poster stated...why?? Inmates are inmates for a reason.

See my answer elsewhere. I forgot to note that it is a fire-able offense on my unit. The policy is there for a reason.

Please think about this before you continue any further!!!! I worked as a Correctional Officer through most of college, and I personally do not recommend being involved with an inmate. I don't want to judge anyone but you will just be adding extra problems to your life. Some of these men are so manipulative, and all they do is prey on women who they think can benefit them. What can he do for you-nothing! You won't even know if he's telling you the truth about why he is in prison in the first place. I have seen many women where I worked get involved with inmates, and nothing good came of it. I hope you are not dreaming of risking all you have worked for to be with an inmate. There are millions of non-delinquent men here who I'm sure want to date you. Please don't mess up your life, I really don't think it will be worth it. They are the masters of lies and deception, they will tell you ANYTHING to get what they want, how do you think they make it in prison??? What does he want to write for, if he can't write you a check, then why waste your time and paper. You can do what you want, but I'm just letting you know what I've seen happen so many times before. Use your head girl!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think the hospital is the appropriate place to be meeting someone. Like the above poster said, go to the singles club or us e the internet but stay away from patients much less inmates. Besides what kind of life will you have once he is released? Difficulty finding jobs, remember all those questions about "have you ever been convicted". Do you really want to set yourself up for that?

Is this post for real? Come on now. I can't understand you types who KNOWINGLY introduce crisis and chaos into your lives. Do you think an inmate is there for being a good citizen and all around swell person.Yes people make mistakes, but this doesn't sound like an inmate who forgot to pay 3 parking tickets.
sorry if I sound too harsh, but it steams me this subject.
Ask the prison nurses (Correctional Nurses)

Unless this inmate was your patient for a very long time, there's no way to know his true character and even under those circumstances things could be unknown. And whatever landed him in prison in the first place, I'm sure he would say that it wasn't his fault or that he didn't mean to do it! I would advise against it.
I agree. Once he gets out of prison, he's going to need a place to stay and may be working on his "free rent" right now. The only thing I can see that a female can get from a male inmate is alot of collect phone calls.
