Here's a new sticky for students involved in online/distance BSN programs through Indiana State University. Enjoy!
Ok, the way that I am looking at it with TCN grid that was given to me by the rep, I can do about 7 of the CLEP tests on my own without TCN without much hassle. I went to the CLEP website and they sell study guides (couldn't find them all on ebay or craigslist) for $10. Does this sound right? I want to make sure that I'm not oversimplifying this. It looks like, through the website that I can purchase the study guide (CLEP) and then go take the test when I'm ready. Is that right? Do you know if TCN will take all of those credits once I pass them? I was going to tell TCN rep that I want to complete those on my own, then sign for the excelsior, dantes and nursing courses through them. Am I way off base here or is this easily done the way I have outlined it?
TCN *only* sells study guides. Think of them as a textbook publisher because that's what they do. You do not need TCN to accept *anything*. CLEP study guides aren't like the TCN ones in that they are I believe outlines whereas TCN study guides are like textbooks. But you don't need TCN for anything at all if you don't want to use them.

The only part TCN plays in it other than giving you initial info, Is selling you the modules. They never see any oinfor from Clep or Dantes, When you set up the test they will ask you itf you want your results send to a school you put ISU, they will send you info to ISU. With excelsior after you have tested out of all the material you need you you request a transcript ( will cost a few $$) to be sent to ISU. ISU then reviews all transcripts for test out ( and CC classes if you took them) and they will let you know if you have everyting you need.Hope that ansewers you ?'s. You are not off base.

Yes, this pretty much answers them. I am assuming that ISU accepts all of these test outs. Are the excelsior classes distance classes or test outs?

Excelsior are test outs also.Same thing you study the material independantly and then test on it. They have content guides on thier website and from what I have read if you follow them you will be ok. I have also read the practice test they offer (for $60 i think) are well worth the money I believe there are 2 practice test for the $60.
BTW to anyone how do you you get the "originally posted by...." to show when copying a quote It never seems to show for me when I copy a quote.....lol
I have a question for anyone enrolled in this program. How have you fulfilled your foreign language requirement? There is a two semester/6 credit hour requirement. I have looked into my local community college which does offfer Spanish online but the classes seems very cumbersome and difficult. ISU will accept sign language courses also but I have not had luck finding any.Suggestions?

You didn't take foreign language in high school? That's what I used.

I took 4 years of high school French and they said that was acceptable.... I don't think sign language counts but call ISU and find out its really easy and they answer quuicly.
Does this program accept online A&P and Micro? If so, does anyone know where to find these classes online? And how is the 'lab' portion incorporated into online classes?Thank You
I don't know of any online but you can take the Excelsior test for those classes and ISU accepts those. There's no lab for that. It's acceptable because you're already an LPN.
I think I have decided I want to use TCN for my degree but I want to try to do a few of the CLEP tests on my own with the CLEP study guides to keep costs down. Is this a crazy idea? Or will the rep look at me like I have 3 heads?
That sounds good, buy them on ebay and try it out and see if you can do it on ur own.... then think about buying the college network guides
TCN is offering a "deal" right now that for the month of February, they will match your down payment and give you one module free. Have you seen these "deals" before? The last time I met with him, they didn't have this and I am questioning whether or not to sign with less modules so that I can take advantage of the "deal".
