Here's a new sticky for students involved in online/distance BSN programs through Indiana State University. Enjoy!
For those of you who live near or within driving distance to the ISU campus, I talked to Dr. Miller today. She said that they have the CSM courses at the campus and that students can come and make copies of them as long as they pay for the printing. The CSM's for the test outs cannot be taken off of the campus but you can make any copies you want at the campus.
Also she said that in your course area you can click on the 224 test out and view the syllabus and content for the test outs. She said not to worry about clicking on something that you shouldn't because you cannot get in to the actual test without a password. She suggested looking at the actual content for each test out and focusing on that study material because that is what will be on there. She suggested purchasing the Med/Surg text because we will be using for all 3 of the med/surg courses and she suggested getting a good NCLEX study guide like the new one from Saunders to study.
She said that the where a lot of LPN's have trouble and are lacking in their knowlege is lab values and rationals and pharmacology...she said know your drugs.
Just thought I would pass on what I learned to all of you....

Do you know what website you get the syllabus from? Do you have to have already be enrolled to ISU for access to the web info?
Do you know what med surg book is used?
I tried looking up info on ISU by googling it but I'm limited on what info I can view.

Yes, you have to be accepted to ISU, have a sycamore ID and contact Carol Layman to set it up on your blackboard account.
You know what guys...this is great info. I have been looking for this for so long. Chaxanmom, chelle, anyone else already accepted into the program, have any of you had problems with setting up your clinicals. Chelle I believe you reside in Indiana so this probably isn't a problem. But for others in different states, I know it takes months probably, but you have to find a site, find a preceptor, have that preceptor approved, and then your state BON has to approve the whole thing. What if this doesn't happen? That's what I'm affraid of. Finishing all those gen ed's, taking the TAES, paying fees and tuition left and right, and then not being able to get my clinical hours:angryfire. This would send me right over the edge.
Well, first it has to be approved by your BON before you even start the program so check with that first. My clinicals were super easy. I did start earlier than most and emailed the clinical guy before I even finished my application to the program. Normally that isn't done but because of my GPA and TEAS scores we figured it was a safe gamble that I would get in.
My one clinical site took forever and when that happens he will contact you to get info for a back-up site just in case the facility falls through. My clinicals for fall I'm doing at NIH which is really guaranteed since I have a good friend who is a pretty high up researcher there and is friends with the lady who does preceptorships. So that's in the works. That one I made the initial contact with but otherwise ISU does it. My other that I want to use is Georgetown and that's in process. It does take several months but the ISU guys are super efficient so the time issue is on the part of the hospital. Most people do all their clinicals at one place so it's not usually this complicated. lol! The hospital I'm doing psych at now didn't want to commit to doing all my clinicals so that's why we're working on agreements with Georgetown and NIH for the rest. I would be fine with just NIH but it was my choice to pursue Georgetown as well just for experience and for future job contacts. I'm going to hopefully split my time between the two.
The only reason I could foresee any trouble is if you live in a tiny town with one lone hospital and no others within commuting distance. Then if they say no you are outta luck, kwim? I live in the 'burbs of Washington DC (obviously...lol!) so that wasn't an issue for me. Just have two or three options when you are ready to get things going so they can move quickly to the next if one doesn't pan out. It happens sometimes.
Saw this in another post and a bit confused now myself. Can anyone clarify?
Still so confused..but most likely NOT going the LVN route because the LVN-BSN via Indiana State U/Sonoma State program requires a 3.5 cumulative and I have a 3.2 in 70 units.....
Only think I have been able to find is that you must pass all pre co recs with a "c" or better and no more than 2 repeat classes. Do you really have to have a 3.5 gpa. If you clep dantes or excelsior you exams I thought they just send a cradit/no credit to the school of you choice.
Thank Chaxanmom you relieved me.....lo
Here is what I'm understanding about Sonoma:
The only part Sonoma state play is that they are the ones that monitor the clinical aspect of it. They are the ones that set up the clinicals. The only way that California would allow another distant learing progam was if there was a local school to make sure that clinical hours were met. On the paper work that I got from my meeting with TCN on the bottom there is a $1200 or so charge for Sonoma for clinical fee's and the guy explained that even if you set up your own clinicals that they still have to monitored in order for ca bon to allow the distant program.
Hello all!
I am an LPN ( nearly 24 years now) and have had the TCN modules sitting in boxes- yes they sent all of them to me at one time which was overwhelming to say the least- in my living room for 2 years. I started the psych module when I first got it, but became very ill... was ill off and on for several years before being diagnosed with Lupus, then started a round of 'let's see what meds will help and what won't.' I have been in 'remission' for about 6 months with some minor flares and am ready to buckle down and get these modules out of the way. My goal was to start them in June of 2006 when I had to quit my full time Home Health visiting nurse job because of the Lupus and take 2 years to complete all 12 modules needed before I can move to phase II however... 18 months later and I am just getting around to opening the boxes again.
I have had a hard time getting someone from TCN to contact me reguarding my study materials. I paid alot for them and each module says in the front to call to make sure it is the most up to date version of that module before beginning. Well my liason is no longer working -- she left to have kids--- and no one else has returned my calls or answered my emails.
I have gotten more information from all of you on this list... Thanks so much!
So... now I just need to find the energy to get the studying done and get those darn tests scheduled and taken care of...
Thanks for the help...

hi! i'm finishing my pre-reqs through tcn and i was wondering if anyone has tested out of chem or micro yet...i want to know what the test is like and how in depth it goes! science is my weakest subject and i'm terrified of paying to test and not passing! someone told me that if you study 2 hours a day with the books they give you...you should pass the test. but i just want to hear from anyone who has taken them!

Not sure but it's a transcript from Excelsior so I assume it's the letter grade too like other transcripts.
