I'm tired of it! I had enough!

Nurses General Nursing

I'm getting out of Acute Care (Med/Surg). Tired of the politics and drama. They are making me hate nursing. The 'they' are managements and unappreciated people you encounter.Everything falls on 'the nurse'. Pharmacist needs clarification order they can't call the doctor the nurse must the doctor is in house.Another example Xray Dept. calls the nurse asking for the nurse to call transporter to pick up the patient for a procedure, like your just sitting there waiting for their phone call. I use to love going to work I would add on extra days now I drive feeling nauseated as I get closer to my workplace. I've been there 3 yrs and 10 months. They want you to perform 'up par' and be 'the best' but they are not giving you resources to do it. You state your complaints and concerns verbally and in writing nothing gets done. You just get labelled as a 'complainer' or 'always whining or bitching'. You can't ask too much questions cause your colleagues will label you as a 'dumbass'. But if something goes wrong first thing management will say, "We are here for you why didn't you ask me questions". There's a limit of asking for a 'favor' from your charge nurses or else you will be labelled as a 'lazy ass'. Can't ask too much help even if your drowning and walking the hallways with your head cut off like a chicken. On top of that they will give you another admit. You also got your CNA's telling you what to do and if you don't go there to help pull or lift a patient instantly when they call then they talk about you how 'he doesn't help/she doesn't help'.We could scratch their backs but they can't scratch ours(a nurse said this when I was in clinicals long ago). Got written up because my patients son called administration telling them I was rude when simply I was following HIPPA (long sad story). Damn if you do, Damn if you don't! My co-workers and I call our DON's office "The Principals" office. I can go on and on. I'm simply tired of it. These are some examples of my experience as a acute care nurse some personal experiences and some what I observe. I do love nursing and taking care of the sick I love having the knowldege I have but what kills it is the politics side of being a staff nurse. One of our supervisors said 'it's going to be the same everywhere the drama, the BS.' I sure hope not. I think it's time to move on.. These are my current emotions::angryfire :(

Agency nursing is a good suggestion. Or maybe be a float nurse, if your hospital has a float pool. You can go to different floors, but alot of the politics on the different floors wouldn't involve you.

Or try a different type of nursing..doctor's office, clinic setting.

Your mom was right, as far as getting more experience. A med/surg floor is populated with alot of different patients with varying Dx. It can be useful to have gotten the experience when you go to apply for other types of nursing jobs. It did for me.

I remember back to my med/surg days on an incrediably busy floor. It was some of the hardest work I've done as a nurse. And you are right. It falls to the RN to deal with the doctors, lab, radiology, pharmacy, and the kitchen to coordinate all facets of patient care.

I understand. I've been having some bad times myself this last week and have similar emotions. I'm working on getting my BSN, so I'm choosing to stay put, but I'm now not sure because the stress is getting to me.

:yelclap: :yeah:  thank you for speaking the truth about working conditions for many, many nurses!

every nurse should roll down the windows in their cars, put the windows up in their homes, go up to the rooftop, if necessary, and shout: "i'm tired of this sh*t, and i'm not going to take it anymore!! :angryfire

ok, well, maybe that's taking things a bit far, but you get my sentiments. :wink2:

you go girl! and may god bless you!

sounds like we all work for the same place

I do work agency, which is all I have ever done for many reasons the OP noted. But the med/surg nurse is truly the frontline, in the trenches hero and the first one to take the bullet. I bet if we researched this avenue we would find that med/surg nurses have the highest burn out rate, injuries, addictions, depressions, divorces, general unhappiness.

These nurses are also the last to be appreciated for being the backbone of any unit, I see the flippen MD get love notes, gifts and accolades when they show up for 2.4 minutes at the bedside and leave the nurse to clear up all the questions that went unanswered.

It sucks! Agency can be a blessing. I work my own hours and facilities, the downside is that I get dumped on with the trouble maker patients that no one else wants, I get cancelled first so may go weeks without a shift, if anything goes awry on the unit it is blamed on registry so we have to be especially diligent in covering our az!

Just remember you can only please one person at a time. Put your priorities in order and you wont have any problem. I am not a nurse yet, but I am a supervisor. There are days, when I am been pulled from different directions. I stay calm and take care of the most important things first.

One thing, I wont allowed anyone gets the best of me. Everyday is a new day. I dont take any work at home. I leave the office, everything stays.

I also pray every morning, to ask God for directions. I thank him every night before I go to bed. You have to thank God for the opportunity you have to be a nurse, so many people cannot even get accepted to a program. Just stay put, ask for assistance, tell your boss exactly how you feel and always smile no matter what day you having.

I am going thru Hades right now, but, when I clicked on this (I haven't even had time to read the post) I had to copy, paste and FRAME!

THANK YOU:yeahthat: :icon_hug: :thankya:

I have to agree it's the same no matter where you go.

I have been a nurse for 2 years, and have worked in 6 different places, each resented new hires, especially new grads. The nurses watch me like a hawk, and can't wait til I make a mistake. They talk about you behind your back, and managers encourage it because this way they find out about you too. Where I work right now the manager goes out after hours with certain staff members and there is a definite clique. I have no desire to be a part of any of that, therefore I'm an automatic outsider.

I have to keep reminding myself that I am a good nurse, and that the patient is the reason why we are here. I chalk the bs up to insecurity and unhappiness on the part of those who are doing it.

I sincerely hope that the OR is too busy a place to allow for the smallmindedness, and if not, at least I'll be so busy learning I won't have time to care. If I had known it was this bad, I'd have taken computers.
