I'm tired of it! I had enough!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm getting out of Acute Care (Med/Surg). Tired of the politics and drama. They are making me hate nursing. The 'they' are managements and unappreciated people you encounter.Everything falls on 'the nurse'. Pharmacist needs clarification order they can't call the doctor the nurse must the doctor is in house.Another example Xray Dept. calls the nurse asking for the nurse to call transporter to pick up the patient for a procedure, like your just sitting there waiting for their phone call. I use to love going to work I would add on extra days now I drive feeling nauseated as I get closer to my workplace. I've been there 3 yrs and 10 months. They want you to perform 'up par' and be 'the best' but they are not giving you resources to do it. You state your complaints and concerns verbally and in writing nothing gets done. You just get labelled as a 'complainer' or 'always whining or bitching'. You can't ask too much questions cause your colleagues will label you as a 'dumbass'. But if something goes wrong first thing management will say, "We are here for you why didn't you ask me questions". There's a limit of asking for a 'favor' from your charge nurses or else you will be labelled as a 'lazy ass'. Can't ask too much help even if your drowning and walking the hallways with your head cut off like a chicken. On top of that they will give you another admit. You also got your CNA's telling you what to do and if you don't go there to help pull or lift a patient instantly when they call then they talk about you how 'he doesn't help/she doesn't help'.We could scratch their backs but they can't scratch ours(a nurse said this when I was in clinicals long ago). Got written up because my patients son called administration telling them I was rude when simply I was following HIPPA (long sad story). Damn if you do, Damn if you don't! My co-workers and I call our DON's office "The Principals" office. I can go on and on. I'm simply tired of it. These are some examples of my experience as a acute care nurse some personal experiences and some what I observe. I do love nursing and taking care of the sick I love having the knowldege I have but what kills it is the politics side of being a staff nurse. One of our supervisors said 'it's going to be the same everywhere the drama, the BS.' I sure hope not. I think it's time to move on.. These are my current emotions::angryfire :(

Bipley, regarding the second comanager you speak of...why did no one ever level a sexual harassment charge against the jerk??? or did I totally misunderstand you?

We did. He was put on paid admin leave during the investigation. HR brought us all in one by one and we all told our stories. He came back and nothing was done. We were told they could not tell us details as it was a personal issue between management and the jerk. When he came back we all got together and a majority of the nurses quit on the same day.

I post on a police forum and many of those guys are my real time friends. One guy works in the very city I worked in. I asked him about this and he said it is a criminal issue, certainly not a civil issue. But it would be up to a jury to decide and none of us have any absolute proof. It really does come down to our word against his. My law enforcement officer friend tried to talk me into filing criminal charges but I doubt my peers would do the same so it really would come down to my word against his.

We are listening and TOTALLY understand.

I've been in nursing for only 8 months and am beginning to wonder and TOTALLY understand what "eating their young" means.

I think the nursing profession in general need to be more cohesive and organized and STOP putting up with all this S^%T.

Personally I think ALL docotrs and administrators should be nurses for TWO years in order to be administrators and doctors!

Anyone out there vote for THAT?:p

You have my vote. And I am serious, let's make it a law!

I was a hospital administrator! :crying2:

I got so sick of worrying about budgets.

Now I am a nurse. Am sick of worrying about budgets!

:rotfl:

I got out of administration BECAUSE I felt I didn't have a CLUE what nurses were experiencing "in the trenches" on the floors.

It is an eye opening experience.

One thing I have discovered is that politics with MEN is easier to take than school yard WOMEN behavior. Gossip, backstabbing, jealousy, nitpicking that women do! It is awful!

Men will usually go toe to toe with you and not nitpick over "she looked at me funny" or "she said this about me..."

Men could give a rats ass. They tend to business...women tend to tend to social stuff. Nurses DO eat their young. They don't "group" well - they clique. They don't team work as well as men.

NOT all of you ladies!

Women tend to get their feelings hurt SOOOO easily! They read things into EVERYTHING!

Example: A doctor will speak to the point with a nurse. No voice raised, no crossed eyes, no meaness.

The NURSE more often than NOT will later say: "He jumped on me" or "He is so mean..."

I stand there looking at the nurse like: "Are we talking about the same doctor and situation????"

Ohhhhh, Jerico! You are about to discover what "eating their young" REALLY means.

However... I fully agree with you. Now MOVE and let me hide under that chair with you!

Why do nurses always take the brunt of everything in a hospital? My former employer (former as of November 28...and not by my choice) makes their nurses do all sorts of crazy things. The nurses have to rinse glasses and dishes after the patients eats if they have anything "sticky, starchy, or sugary." So...nurses are now rinsing plates after a patient has mashed potatoes and gravy, milkshakes, ice cream, any casserole, most soups, etc. Nursing has to clean rooms if a patient is discharged "after hours.'" Just what I want and have time to do when we are being slammed with admists and discharges at 5:00 PM. Laundry has complained about "clean, folded linen" being sent to be washed...as far as I remmeber, no clean linen was ever sent...anything folded was things like extra blankets that were folded after the patient used them...did they expect us to just toss them in a heap until the patient needed them again? Nursing is now expected to empty all trash at the end of their shift...most of us did this anyway, but now housekeeping doesn't do it at all...nursing takes care of trash in all patient rooms, waiting areas on the med/sirg unit, nurses station area, breakrooms, etc. Housekeeping only does the offices, cafeteria, and halls. Housekeeping no longer does terminal cleaning in the ED...nope, that is nursing's job...certainly they have time to mop floors and clean blood and other fluids off walls, etc. They made the mess...certainly they can clean it up! And finally...(not really finally because the list could go on and on)...they have mandadted the "No One Gets the Point" program...which means that if someone asks for directions on how to get to x-ray, soda machines, bathrooms, etc, they are ESCORTED not just pointed in the right direction - NO EXCEPTIONS...if you are too busy to show them where to go, find someone who can take care of it. I was so wanting to be in the middle of CPR and have some jerk barge in wanting to know where he could get a sandwich, so I could climb off the table and show him where the vending machines are...but darn it...I am no longer there.

They have lost several nurses in the past six months...all of them were terminated for one thing or another. One called the doctor too many times because her hospice patient wasn't getting pain relief...one got caught using the internet on her break to research a diagnosis for a patient, one refused to clean the breakroom that she hadn't used all shift while people who had used it sat and watched "breaking news" on TV...one refused to change the diaper of an ED patient's son, after all the husband was right there but couldn't be expected to take care of his child-his wife was getting stitches!...they lost some great nurses over silliness.

For all nurses that are tired of the office politics become AGENCY nurses! Agency nurses stay in your local area and get paid big bucks! No insurance, benefits, but enough money to start your own benefits. I work for Medical Staffing Solutions in the Tri-State area, IN, IL, KY. it isn't full time but it does keep me from having to deal with the drama and whining. If you don't like the assignmnet you don't have to go back!!

Hi KWagner: How much experience must you have to become an agency nurse? Just graduated this May, working on med-surg floor for 3 months now.

Specializes in Geriatrics, Pediatrics, Home Health.

They prefer 3-6 months. I have 3 months experience.

CotJockey,

No way!! That's madness. The positive thing that we all can leave we have the choice of doing so. But I do feel bad for the 'contract/sponsor' foreign nurses who just gotta swallow their dignity until their contracts expires usually for 2 years. It sucks that I got burned out now, I usually do a lot of extra days prior to christmas so my family and I have the best holidays. I don't even want to go and do my regular days anymore.

Alot of this is why I work PRN. I can't stand nor want to deal with the day to day politics and b.s. administrators and managers dole out. I work when I want. IF the slightest feeling of "Burnout" hits, I tell my scheduler "time for a break" and take it off. I feel for you. It's clear, it's time for you to make some changes. Exactly what those are, is up to you.

I understand what you are feeling. As of me I'm working in a nursing home here in UK for a year now and our manager is a b**ch.Most of the time she is shouting at her staff without any reason. Some of the staff who know her for a long time said that it is because she has a history of psychological imbalance.Well the question is why she became a manager where in fact she can't even balance her life?I can relate with Bipley coz once she shouted at me and my senior nurse without knowing why.As of now she put me in night shifts just because she found out that I was accepted for the post in the NHS Trust.Well it is better to transfer in the hospital than working in a nursing home with a manager who is very erratic in nature.I feel that this is a good place for me to start and I hope that you will find a good employer too. Good luck!;)
