I'm thinking of finding another career

I'm bored at my current position....I've been actively looking for a new job.

I've been denied positions over and over...they say I'd have to work midnights to start out. (our local hospitals are mainly 12 hour shifts only)

I will never be able to work 12 hour shifts b/c of my dh's schedule.

Anyway I'm thinking of getting into another career.

If you could choose another career...what would that be??

You could think about teaching, research or working in a Dr office? Maybe home health would be good. Hospice? Lots of oncall with the two last choices. You could work in adult day care maybe? Do private duty for an agency?

Do any of those sound good?

Could also do case management but don't get stuck in one case management job like I just gave up as they were really screwing me on money.

Research is pretty good -- can be very flexible -- lots of paper, though.

We have several per diem nurses that work 8 hour shifts, whenever they want. They schedule themselves. And in our unit, the full time people all work 12s.

How about an outpatient surgical center....usually a 8-5 job, no weekends,no call....? or an urgent care center, although those do usually stay open until around 10 pm? Md`s office? except these usually pay lousy....School nurse?? Lots of options out there.....look around...Good luck......:rolleyes:

I mainly work 12 hr shifts as a agency RN but I also give myself a break every now and then and work 8 hrs. I have started to schedule 8 hrs. and if I feel up to it I let them know I can work another 4. works pretty well for me. Now if I had to start all over again, I would move to Las Vegas and go to Blackjack school and become a dealer. Perhaps when I retire I will do just that.

I've applied to a short stay surgery position but was declined. She wanted a midnight person. I asked about afternoon positions. She said you'll have to start on midnights we never have days/afternoon positions unless you've been on midnights. (they work internally)

I've tried a afternoon contigent position on an urgent care. No luck so far.

I've thought of teaching...but don't want to go back to school.

I'm interested in finding a job....but nothing as intense as MSN. (I'm so busy with my two boy's)

My dh keeps telling me find a new career. I've been a strong-headed nurse for 6 years trying to improve the system. But dh says I can't do it myself...get a different career. And I've fought with him that I love nursing. (actually it's a love/hate relationship)

I don't know I guess I'm frustrated. I've applied for numerous positions in the passed 7 years...but never have much luck getting job offers. (believe me I'm persistant) I truly feel I've done my time for step-down med/surg...step-down cardiac and want to move on....but keep being told I have to work midnights.

I feel like I did when I was 18 y/o. What am I going to do with my life?????????????? Whatever I decide I just want it to make me happy....because that'll be the best things for my kids.

Funny I should trip upon this thread as I munch my lunch. I am undecided with whether to go in to nursing or not- I will go for my BSnN if I go for it but I wonder if I too have lofty dreams for helping the nursing profession or if it will be even what I am looking for.... I am 27 and the thought of 4 yrs of school is daunting but I know that it will not become any less so if I wait. But then I think of if I meet someone and we want to have a family etc, i will be only in my first year of the profession when I am 32.... ah yes, the unknown future. But my question to you is you say you are trying to improve the system- I am very holistically minded and I am a Registered Holistic Nutritional Consultant and do not want this to be supressed once I become a nurse. How much of my beliefs in regards to healing/health can I integrate or will I find I always have to address patients in a conventional manner? thanks- oh and what is per diem?

First off the question I can answer....per diem....means as needed...another word could be contigent that you hear. That's what I work. At the facility I work at the contigent positions have two work 2 days a month to maintain their position. (other hospitals have different policies) ((though I work 2 days a week))

Now regarding your other question. I don't know if I truly understand what you're asking...and maybe someone else understands more and can give you an answer. Though I think your knowledge as a registered holistic nutritionist will be useful. Is holistic nutritionist a dietician? (or something a little different)

Knowing nutrition is very important...it's a basic fundamental to nursing. Good luck with your decision...I hope I answered your questions.

My hubby swears l hate my job...he's right...and he's wrong...l went to family MD today for someannoying vague health complaints and she spent 20 minutes discussing reasons to opt for a less stressful avenue of nursing than ER....maybe dh and doc are onto something.......but l don't know where to start!
