Calling all Truman College Nursing Students

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Hi,

Are there any nursing students from Truman on here? Past or present. I have some questions that I can't seem to find the answer to on their website.

1. Is the admission still "lottery system" based? How would that exactly work? I saw on their website that they award points on GPA (ex: "4 X 4 = 16 pts for an A in A&P"). If it's a lottery, how come they look at GPA?

2. What GPA did you have when you got in? Are you a current or past student?

3. If it's GPA based, I think I'll have more luck getting in like that than the lottery. One last thing I wanted to ask, would any of you Truman students, past or present, be willing to sell or let me borrow your notes from Truman's Nursing School? I know you might think I'm trying to find an easy way out or cheat or something. What I really want to do, since I have the summer off, is to study ahead. I have done this in the past with Anatomy and Physiology and it has helped me tons. That's just how I learn. When I have free time, I just like to look at things from a non rushed way. Once school starts, I'll have 17 credit hours of classes and plus work. I will also be studying ahead for Microbiology and A&P this summer so I can really have a lot of time to digest the material.

*Please if you know anyone that would let me use their notes, contact me and I'll work someting out with them. :specs:

Thanks

Flockyman,

Please look on the Truman website. You will find a ranking grid they use and will be able to CALCULATE YOUR OWN points. The admissions committee uses these to determine acceptance. I believe it's out of 112 total. More points equals higer chance. I think I had 90 something and I got in!

Hello senior class,

Does anyone have any feedback at all regarding the following teachers: Huda, Duyungan,Alpan, Azul, Robinson, Rawals, Akpan. Also does anyone have imput regarding clinicals? what is the best day or night , time to go place to go ect . any feedback is welcome. Thanks

Hi nurseollie,

You're lucky I just found my syllabus! Craven will be your best friend during 1st semester. This is the reading list:

Craven:

Week 1: Chapters 1,2,3,5,6,21,22,31,33

Week 2: 22,27

Week 3: 4,14,18,19

Week 4: 9,10,11,12,13,15

Week 5: 26,35,36

Week 6: 4

Week 7: 27,34,43

Week 8: 33

Week 9: 7,28,38

Week 10: 41,42

Week 11: 39,40

Week 12: 44,45

P.S. The semester is obviously 16 weeks long, but some of these will overlap.

This should keep you busy over the summer! I would suggest you read the chapters and then do the study questions in the Craven Study Guide. Also, do the practice questions on www.thepoint.lww.com (you'll be introduced to this website at Orientation-it's the website to the Craven book and you can already sign up if you have the access code). My best advice for doing well on the EXAMS is to do practice questions!!! When you think you have done enough practice questions, go back and do more practice questions!!! I hope I've helped. Good luck to you.

Oh wow...I wish I joined allnurses.com sooner :( I got all of my books as soon as I found out they were in stock at Beck's, but I wound up just relaxing during the summer and getting all of it out of my system before classes start. I read very minimally, and since the bundle with the fundamentals book (Craven) came in Beck's last, I didn't start reading until later on.

Oh my god..I don't know how I will cover 9 chapters within one week!! :crying2: Can you please share any tips on how you were able to cover it all? Time management--something a struggle immensely on--is something I'll probably learn very early in the program....

Don't stress yourself out too much! Save that for later on ;)! One tip I'll share: if you see A LOT of chapters listed for one week, that usually means they're a very easy read! The Craven book has many fluffy chapters. For example, one of them talks about the history of nursing. I have never seen a question on the test about this. The tests will usually focus on what is applicable in nursing (ex: Nursing Process, Head to Toe Assessment, lung sounds, etc.). Don't fret over the fluff stuff. You'll see what I mean once you actually attend the first couple of lectures. It'll make more sense then. Don't beat yourself over not having studied over the summer. I didn't either. Plus, you wouldn't really have known what your teacher would focus on. You'll be fine. First semester is not that bad. Good luck!

Does anybody have professor Preston? when I registered she was with Holy Cross hospital, but now that I printed my scheduled it shows she is with U of C

Ruby2623...I just saw this post from last year. I am assuming you had her as your professor for 101?? I just registered with her. Is there any information you can give me regarding her teaching style/if she is a good clinical/lecture instructor. There wasn't too much info on her on ratemyprofessor.com. Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated. She seemed really nice at orientation.

Anyone considering purchasing an older set of some of the texts to save some pocket money?? Just wondering if I'm the only one. Any advice is appreciated!!

Thank you soo much! It's difficult for me to not fret about it and I am kind of beating myself up for not being able to get through the first 3 chapters. Actually, I am a slow reader and get frustrated easily when I think the read is boring (to be honest, I don't find the chapter about community health nursing very interesting at all..it's kind of repetitive). I think I will just look at the chapter summary for the first 3 chapters and then move on..I would imagine Chapter 4, nursing theory would be most important (although not assigned for first week). I can't wait until Monday so I know for sure what my professor will focus on. I was unlucky to get one of the last lottery numbers so I could not choose my professor. I have Preston, which is okay I guess. In the end, it really depends on the student's diligence and studies. I hope my neurotic anxiety doesn't get the better of me X_X

Hi, nursingstudent515! I also have Preston this semester. I don't know much about her. I just heard she tends to read off of her powerpoint slides. She does seem like a very nice person, but I don't know how she teaches as a clinical instructor (I am going to have her for clinicals as well). I hope the very best for us! I am already trying to read ahead..can't wait for Monday! :)

What day do you have her for clinicals?? I have her Thursday. I have actually heard that she is good in clinicals and not so much in lecture. Are you on Facebook??

Hey guys, I also have Mrs. Preston and Thursdays for her clinicals:)

Awesome. Maybe we can form some sort of study group. Are you on Facebook?? If so, add me as a friend. My name is Aimee McPeck.

And in response to my own question (which i posted on various threads), the professor e-mailed me back regarding using older edition books and recommended that we purchase up to date books due to the fact that we will be using ATI as opposed to HESI (probably what they used last year) Along with that comes with various codes in the current books that we'll be using.
