Calling all Truman College Nursing Students

U.S.A. Illinois

Published

Hi,

Are there any nursing students from Truman on here? Past or present. I have some questions that I can't seem to find the answer to on their website.

1. Is the admission still "lottery system" based? How would that exactly work? I saw on their website that they award points on GPA (ex: "4 X 4 = 16 pts for an A in A&P"). If it's a lottery, how come they look at GPA?

2. What GPA did you have when you got in? Are you a current or past student?

3. If it's GPA based, I think I'll have more luck getting in like that than the lottery. One last thing I wanted to ask, would any of you Truman students, past or present, be willing to sell or let me borrow your notes from Truman's Nursing School? I know you might think I'm trying to find an easy way out or cheat or something. What I really want to do, since I have the summer off, is to study ahead. I have done this in the past with Anatomy and Physiology and it has helped me tons. That's just how I learn. When I have free time, I just like to look at things from a non rushed way. Once school starts, I'll have 17 credit hours of classes and plus work. I will also be studying ahead for Microbiology and A&P this summer so I can really have a lot of time to digest the material.

*Please if you know anyone that would let me use their notes, contact me and I'll work someting out with them. :specs:

Thanks

Haven't used it in two years but okay I will tonight!:) Nice to meet you!

What day do you have her for clinicals?? I have her Thursday. I have actually heard that she is good in clinicals and not so much in lecture. Are you on Facebook??

Thurs at U of C! Yes I am on facebook I will add you =) My name is Jaime..ignore the last name on facebook cuz it's not my real last name =P

Awesome. Maybe we can form some sort of study group. Are you on Facebook?? If so, add me as a friend. My name is Aimee McPeck.

Hey Aimee! I just added you on facebook =) Lol I remember you from orientation! That's great we have the same clinical days =D Forming a study group would be a great idea ^^

Hey guys, I also have Mrs. Preston and Thursdays for her clinicals:)

Awesome! I'm on facebook as well..Jaime D'Amore (not real last name). Hope to see you guys in class Mon! =)

And in response to my own question (which i posted on various threads), the professor e-mailed me back regarding using older edition books and recommended that we purchase up to date books due to the fact that we will be using ATI as opposed to HESI (probably what they used last year) Along with that comes with various codes in the current books that we'll be using.

Ah...have you been able to access blackboard? Last time I checked, I wasn't enrolled in the class yet (according to blackboard), so I couldn't access those files Preston told us about. Blackboard says it will show up on first day of class, unfortunately. I got the book already and am super anxious on what to focus on. I will probably shoot her an email myself..

I've just checked blackboard. I only see two nursing courses active in the catalog (NURS210 & 211)which might mean that she hasn't activated/posted 101 up yet. Hopefully Monday!

Are you referring to Craven's Fundamentals of Nursing text? Yes, I feel your anxiety. I read in one of these threads that we might be covering up to 9 chapters the first week. I would start reading already!

Yes I meant the Fundamentals textbook. It's soo hard for me to concentrate :( the anxiety is kinda making me scatterbrained and a nervous wreck lol. I think the course objectives off of the book's site helped me focus on certain key topics. Oh wow...you can see those courses active? I don't know why I can't see anything yet. Oh well. I guess I should really just calm down and wait for Monday. I mean, read still, but yeah those 9 chapters are kind of what I'm focusing on.

I actually talked to Preston about what to focus on (I was pretty much the last person who registered), and she listed a few topics like code of ethics. She said she will hardly test on nursing history and basically the first 3 chapters, but...I don't know if I should just move onto the later chapters and kinda ignore the first 3 =\ I think procrastinating will be a bad idea for sure though.

Are you reading some of those chapters now?

I've read 1,2,3,5,6,21 and am currently reading 22. I hope to finish what is said for the entire first week by Monday but not sure if that will happen. I've done the study guide questions through chapter 6. I can't see anything on blackboard yet either...I did send her an email today. Also...has anyone created their account for ATI?? I did it today and when I tried to put my books on there...it says you need an access code from the school. I'm guessing we will get that Monday. Kinda annoying though cuz I wanted to input all that stuff now while I have the time. Oh well.

Ruby2623...I just saw this post from last year. I am assuming you had her as your professor for 101?? I just registered with her. Is there any information you can give me regarding her teaching style/if she is a good clinical/lecture instructor. There wasn't too much info on her on ratemyprofessor.com. Any info you could share would be greatly appreciated. She seemed really nice at orientation.

Hi nursingstudent515, yes I did have Mrs. Preston last year for 101, but I had to withdraw the class due to me working too many hours, but now I am only working part-time and I start 101 on monday :yeah:

As some of the previous posts mentioned, Mrs. Preston does tend to read off the powerpoints, and does not seem to like when you ask questions, and she does have her temper at times (she thinks she is always right ;)), but nobody is perfect, once she warms up with you, she is a sweetheart (she plays tough). Once she warms up, she is very helpful and she is always there for you, she will always reply to you when you communicate via email and she is very nice!. As a previous post mentioned before, she is excellent in clinicals, she will make sure you see anything new and wants the whole clinical group to see interesting cases at the hospital. she is very aggressive (in a good way) and you really learn so much with her at clinicals. Regarding lecture, you would need to be more like a self learner, because she seem to like teaching in the clinicals more than lecturing, once again, nobody is perfect and she is a great person, some people might not agree, but this is my personal opinion. Good luck:yeah:

Wow...that is awesome. You have only 2 more chapters to go, so you'll probably at least get to read through the chapters by Monday. I'm quite a slow reader and couldn't really focus either. Now I'm just trying to take notes on the chapters by using the course objectives on the fundamentals site. Hopefully I get through most of the chapters..my goal was to finish all of the chapters as well before lecture begins. At this rate, I'll be happy if I get to chapter 6 before Monday. It's ok though because she will focus on certain topics in class so that we know what to focus on as well for our exam. She told me it should be sometime in mid-September and will cover 20 chapters, so we have about a month to study for the first exam :)

As for ATI, I signed up on the site under "City Colleges of Chicago", but not sure if it's the right school. I noticed Malcolm-X has its own nursing school up there but not Truman. I will wait for the ATI run-through during class.

Thank you for taking the time to respond to me...I really appreciate it. I would rather have a good clinical instructor than lecture. I can teach myself and will make sure to email any questions I may have. I actually kinda prefer a professor that doesn't encourage questions during class. A lot of times I feel like time is being wasted because people ask questions you already know the answers to. That gives her time to finish her lecture, then you can go through and figure out what you don't understand. I feel that is what office hours are for. Again...thanks for the response and good luck to you as well!!!!!!!!!!1

For those of you who have Preston, I just received an email from the professor; blackboard is now available and I found many useful resources on there, INCLUDING the syllabus :)
