Hi, I have a dual Filipino/US citizenship and a fresh BSN graduate here in the Philippines. Does anyone know if the Illinois state BON will require me to take the Philippines' local board exam first? or can i go straight to taking the NCLEX for my US license since i am a US citizen?

hi nrskarenrn,

ostansipek and i have similar situation

since i am a u.s. immigrant...

1. can i just waive in a requesting letter citing that i intend to work in the u.s. and not in the country of my nursing education ?

2. with the letter of waiver, would the illinois board of nursing exempt me from taking the philippine nursing licensure exam ?

this is something you really need to discuss with the bon. they make their own decision based on the information you supply.

Since you were educated outside the US, the ILL BON will require you to submit education verification which is the CGFNS-CES. On the CES, they (CGFNS) will require you to be licensed in your country of origin (I don't know if they are going to waive this). And you are not exempted in taking the Phil. NLE because you are still a Filipino. You can contact the Illinois BRN or the Continental Testing (CTS) as well as the CGFNS-CES. Look in the website of CTS and you will find the contact person. You can inquire in there through email or phone. Gud luck.

Hey am in the same boat, can u tell me what happened with ur application with illinois? Did IL BON consider ur RN app for licensure given ur current situation? Did u submit a waiver or some kind of letter?

I too just graduated BSN in the phil, but didnt take the local boards either, however, am currently an LPN licensed in the state of illinois and wisconsin, studied in the US for my LPN. But since I wanted to become an RN/BSN I went ahead and studied in the phils coz it doesnt cost too much.

I am now applying for cgfns ces for illinois, sent an application for california at the same time. Just trying to see which state process my app first.

Any input is appreciated.

j3yang21 i hope its not too late..

If your applying on California they can allow you to take NCLEX-RN without the Phil. License as long as you have a letter explaining why you don't have a license in the philippines.. However if you are applying for CES they will require you to have your license in the PI. as part of the evaluation.

i hope this will help.. GOOD LUCK..

one must meet all the requirements in order to get licensed in ill. even you you have license from another state but do not have license from home country where educated, you can not apply for endorcement --they will not grant a license.

california now requires a social secuirty number in order to be licensed there:

important information regarding required social security numbers for licensure applicants: the board of registered nursing (brn) will no longer accept applications that do not contain a u.s. social security number. the nursing practice act provides for a unified examination and licensing application. once an applicant passes the examination, a license is automatically issued. under these circumstances the brn cannot accept applications for the examination and licensure without a u.s. social security number. | more information

indeed right.. you need to have SSN in order to take nclex-rn in cali.. im sorry if you misunderstood my post.. as in my case i was able to take nclex without my philippine license but i do have my SSN.. :)

for addition.. :) i currently applying in IL for endorsement and yes they will require your PI license to be used in CES.. and for internationally educated nurse you really need a CES report or ERES in order to have a license in IL by any means examination or endorsement..

You are a resident of Illinois with a Nursing Degree from the Philippines, decided to take the NCLEX in California but did not have to take the Board Exam in the Philippines?

Were you not able to take the NCLEX in Illinois? I'm just curious because I am currently finishing up my degree here in the Philippines and I'm so lost with the post grad process. I came here thinking that I wouldn't have to take the local board in the Philippines and just go back home to take the NCLEX in Illinois since I am a US citizen. If you don't mind, I'd really appreciate any information on how to go about this after I graduate.
