NO! Some people just aren't Nurse material! My husband, for example.. God love him.. He just doesn't have the patience and compassion for people that it takes to be a good Nurse. Others are just lazy, incompetent or just plain (for lack of a better word) stupid.. lol.. I wouldn't want such people working alongside me OR as my Nurse!

I would like to be able to make politicians, admins, and mgrs nurses for a day so they would have a clue.

It would be nice for people to be able to understand what our job truly entails, but, like the previous poster said, there are some people who just have no business in the nursing business.

could you imagine a nurse that passed out at the sight of a needle? or blood? or any of the various other things we get to see? NO WAY!!!!! how silly.

I wouldn't necessarily want to make everyone a nurse, but I would *love* to have everyone shadow a nurse just for a few hours to see everything we really do and put up with.

Some of my worst patients have been nurses! No way!!! (I wouldn't want me as a pt.) If everyone were a nurse, we'd have all of these non-compliant self-diagnosing hypochondriacs, like me out there!

I think everyone should get a birds eye view of what it's like, especially those who say we make too much money. But when I see those young girls at the hospital in their student scrubs, all I want to do is scream RUN!!!!!

No! I know there's a nursing shortage, but if this career choice was easy EVERYBODY would be doing it. Thats why I busted my tail & made it through school & passed NCLEX!
Sorry but fact of the matter is there are some TRUE idiots out there & I surely wouldn't want them out there taking care of my family.
I couldn't imagine some of my friends doing nursing. They just don't have the critical thinking that nursing calls for. It's a different type of thinking that not everybody is able to do.

If everyone became nurses who would fix my car or check me out at the grocery store?

If you're asking this so as to create the scenario that everyone would have an understanding of what it is we do, then yes... for a few hours, I'd like everyone to experience nursing as a busy bedside nurse.
Otherwise, NO. We are special people and not everyone can be US!

No. Because not everyone is cut out for it.
Why do you ask this question?
But I see what SICU Queen is saying --- one thing I would like to see is that ALL high school students serve some sort of community service - and that could include hospital work, EMS work, police work, fire fighting, working at a shelter, etc .... I say this because I do feel that many adults are disconnected from some of the realities in life in this day and age.
We farm out everything any more -- caring for our sick, elderly, children, and our dead.
No wonder people have difficulty letting go of terminally ill people - they haven't seen first hand the suffering that they endure. I once had a patient in SICU who had a huge abdominal surgery (he had cancer) and had massive third spacing - after surgery they couldn't close the wound but held it together with towel clips - the poor guy was in hell with pain. The wife wanted everything done even though it was futile. Then one night I invited her to stay for the dressing change - she did and the next morning she made him a DNR and later wrote me the nicest thank you note. She just needed to see first hand what was going to understand the situation.
Sorry for the digression but I think the posted question touches on a much larger subject
