  1. Hello all, It has been ages since I was last on this site so I hope this post is where it should be. It is late and I am exhausted or I would have read more "how to" before posting. I will do better tomorrow. Anyway, I am looking for ideas of nursing jobs that are not at the bedside. I love my job, I love being a nurse and I love my patients (most of them), but I broke my foot and messed up my ankle in a bike injury on August 16th. This is Oct 13th and I am still off work and battling the whole thing. I am currently on FMLA but my biggest fear is losing my job or not being able to do floor work again. I am hearing unspoken rumblings of unhappiness from my boss and I am just worried. I have been doing my homework and found some ideas but nothing that really shouts out to me. I have kids so relocating is not my first option. I am in Illinois. I think I am leaning toward something like chart review but I also want more information. Any ideas, information, warnings, etc, anybody might have are welcome. Thank you all!
  2. thank you all for your info.........and i am not looking for medical advice, just want to know of others who have the same issue as i do. I already know i have gallbladder disease and i have already been to an md. I am more worried about the upcoming surgery than anything else and it was nice to hear from some of the others who have already gone through it. :)
  3. Hi, I am about to have a lap chole in a few weeks, due to a HIDA scan result of 9%, and very mild intermittent pain, nausea, etc... ( all that goes with having a wimpy gallbladder ). Last night I had a rough night because everytime I layed down to sleep, I would feel my stomach contents moving upward, and I would have to sit up. I was nauseated after each episode but never vomited. I am wondering, is reflux a symptom of gallbladder disease? I have not heard that being one of most patients complaints and can't find anything to specifically say yes it is or no it isn't. And any of you who had the surgery, are you glad you did? thanks gang :)
  4. Ok you wanted more...here it goes....I guess I have had some strange experiences from very young. The crazy thing is I do not believe in ghosts and I think some of those so called "psychics" are lunatics. But things have happened I have yet to explain, like these: 1. The time when I was about 7 yrs old and left my favorite stuffed animal at my aunt's house. I was heartbroken and wanted to go back to her house to get him but my mom said no. I went to my room and sat against the wall, had my arms around my knees and laid my head down and cried my eyes out. As I was sitting there I heard out of no where this very calm sweet endearing male voice that sounded like it was in a canyon say to me "now don't cry about it". I instantly stopped crying right then and there and slowly got up and went to the window. I seen nothing but the beautiful sun shining through. There was no one there. No one in my room, no one outside my window. But I HEARD it clear as it could be. I have never heard that voice again but sometimes wish I could. 2. When my husband and I first moved into our house we live in now. We could hear all kinds of noises....file cabinets shutting ( and there weren't any ), chairs scooting across the tile floor in the basement, toys randomly playing themselves ( musical ones ), and the piano play by itself one or two notes. We ignored all of it and it all quit. 3. My daughter used to talk about the "friends" that lived in our basement, and she even drew a picture of them and their skeleton looking dog. 4. My son woke up aggravated one night and told me the man at end of his bed kept telling him to wake up each time he almost fell asleep. I told it/him/them/whatever to please stop and there was no more trouble. 5. The only one I have ever been afraid of is the one that tried to look like my husband. I thought it was him sitting on the end of the couch as I was coming down the stairs talking to him I noticed he was not responding to anything I said. I started to get ticked but just when I got close enough, he faded away. This same one climbed into my bed one night and I was so afraid. I knew it was not my husband and I thought if I made one move to let it/ him know I knew he was there i was in trouble!
  5. this one happened to me at home not long ago.....i was in that dreamy almost awake state of mind early in the morning and heard a woman whisper "tey tey". It sounded like jibberish and I paid no attention to it, thought i was dreaming. But when i was all the way awake, curiosity got the best of me and i googled the phrase "tey tey". And GUESS WHAT???? It is a hebrew biblical word which means "come with me" AAAGGGHHHHHHH!!!! I am glad I did not go! and i have tons more stories....all true
  6. just last night at work, I walked past a tv, it turned itself on....I walked past it again, it shut itself off!! I think it must be my "electric" personality!!!! LOL!!!!
  7. thanks for your input!! I had already decided not to do flumist because i knew it was live virus, and just didn't like the sound of that being introduced into my child. i am still thinking on the vaccine, just wish I could know more about it first!
  8. i like to believe I still live in a free country and if I chose not to take the shot, that is my RIGHT
  9. don't let a few dirty rocks on your path stop you from the journey, or even slow you down. Its a scary profession but you'll be fine. We continue to learn as we go which helps us become more confident.
  10. I don't think anyone appreciates what another does at a job until they have to do it themselves....
  11. when I was still a fairly new nurse and my fresh abdominal post op patient TOTALLY dehised as I was attempting my first NGT. Exciting yet I felt like I was going to fall straight to the floor, and my legs turned into jello!!

Hi everyone! It has been ages since I have posted anything, so I hope I am doing it right!! Now I am here because I want your thoughts on the H1N1 vaccine. I am totally TORN between what is the best option for my kids, to be vaccinated, or not to be vaccinated. My daughter currently has H1N1 and luckily is not any sicker than she has been with regular old flu. But the news of all the pediatric deaths with H1N1 scare me. I am tossing around the idea of getting her and her brother vaccinated as soon as the shot clinic comes to our area. But I also am a very cautious person. I do not want my kids to get sick but I am not sure if the H1N1 vaccine has been tested enough or given to enough people or out very long to know if it is truly safe. I have tried finding info, but when you read really good, everything is explaining what can happen with the seasonal flu shot and they say its "similar" to the H1N1 vaccine so side effects, etc., "could be" similar. Just want to know any thoughts you may have on it, did you get your own kids vaccinated, have you been dealing with sick patients with H1N1, or yourself? Thanks everyone!! confused and concerned in Iliinois
  13. Yes I was poor growing up and poor going through school, but I made it. My mother had four kids, me being the last 10 years later. I was a BIG oops and she made it very well known. She did not work after I was 5, not sure why. I think she just gave up on life. Looking back I can see she was depressed and overwhelmed, but back then I did not understand it. I was always angry with her for not caring enough about me to change the situation we were in since I could do nothing to change it myself, I was too young. We lived in a small house that was falling apart and had to use food stamps and public aid. She would not cook, she would not clean house, she would not try to get out of the "poor house" as she called it. I decided very young I was not going to live like that with my children. I was going to stand on my own two feet. Hence there came my inspiration and determination. I married at 20 and my husband came from the same background I did, so together, we still had nothing. I had to use credit cards to pay for school while he worked a factory job making a measly 6 dollars an hour. Somehow we survived. I am a nurse and have been for almost 11 years. That helped us get out of a rut for sure. Then my husband started making more money each year. My children live in luxury compared to what I grew up in. They have no idea the struggles their dad and I went through to get here. The big bummer now is my husband is about to lose his job because the plant is shutting down. But I still have a sense of calm because I know I can stand on my own two feet just like I made that promise to myself so many years ago. I wish you the best of luck.:redbeathe
