If you left nursing?

Nurses General Nursing

If tomorrow you had to leave nursing what career would you got to?And do you think your prepared for it and do you think you would be happy doing it?

If you are not doing what you want to do, what is stopping you from doing it?

A word of gentle encouragement, folks: it's not too late to get what you want out of life.

And sometimes, the grass really is not greener on the other side. It took a business failure to make me realize that nursing really is what I love and enjoy. I would hope that -- when push came to shove -- that many of you would realize that you really, deep down, would be a nurse again.

But, if not ... then please, start moving toward whatever it is you really want. Life is too short to spend it doing something you don't like.

LOVE the coffeehouse idea and may just do that when I retire!:)

My chemistry Prof tried his darndest to sway me away from nursing and major in chemistry instead. Maybe I'll listen to him now, 5 years later.....but maybe not.

I really like the coffeehouse idea. Actually, my family talked about opening a Christian coffeehouse. I'd like to run an open mic night at a place like that. I'd do poetry readings, too, and maybe get some of my poems published. But I'd probably never give up nursing altogether.

I would become a professional pinball player and machine designer.

Since there is no school to prepare me for this, and there really isn't a societal need for professional players, I guess I'll stick with nursing.

A Librarian. NO I am not prepared, I need an MLS, and I can't afford it, and no hospital will pay tuition for a non-nsg degree. And yes, to be surrounded by books, I think I would love it.

Hi hoolihan! :)

You know, I was just talking about becoming a Librarian last evening with my husband because I love the smell of books, the quiet of a library, helping little ones learn to enjoy the art of reading, making books come alive for children.... :)

It's not the first time I've had thoughts of becoming a Librarian. When I was a small child, I often thought if I couldn't be a doctor, I would be a Librarian because I practically lived in them from age 7 on up. I can't seem to pull myself out of a bookstore or library once I go inside of one. Hmmmmm...perhaps a true calling for me, maybe... ;) I mean, I've already been on a medical sabbatical from nursing for five years already, so maybe now I can realize that dream??? :)

Often times, one's best friend(s) are those they meet between the binders of a good book!

Since I'm already a nurse working in the travel industry, it wouldn't be much of an effort to "step sideways" and take a non-nursing role in the field. And yes, I believe my experiences would qualify me for many different positions.

Fantasy? I'd love to be a professional student--but I'd need to be independently wealthy for that!

Truth is, no one job, however varied the settings and duties, has ever fulfilled ALL my creative and intellectual needs--but I figure that's what hobbies are for.

And Mary--make mine a nonfat vanilla latte. And a biscotti. :)

I would open up a craft store selling counted cross stitch and eventually expanding to quilting.

....so here goes. I love being a part time LPN in LTC. But if I HAD to change and do something else, I would choose to be an Associate In Ministry. I right now do a lot of volunter work with my church and this field interests me. I would still get to take care of the geriatric population, but in a spiritual way! Don't get me wrong, I do like caring for my elderly residents very much. My kids always say, "Mom, old people are your life". At this point, I am not ready to change. I am happy.

P.S. Mary Dover, Please make some plain (not that fancy flavored) coffee with cream for this nurse when I pull up a seat at your coffee house. And keep it coming....an endless cup for me!

And OBNURSEHEATHER, I will have a slice of whatever you just took out of the oven! For any fresh baked goods, I am not fussy!

For harleyrnac, I would enjoy your poetry readings because there is nothing better than that with a cup of coffee and a piece of cake! Heaven on earth....

cheerfuldoer and hoolihan, I will come to your libraries and have you help me because I know that you will try your hardest to meet my reading needs. I love the library and think highly of librarians for many reasons....

If I left Nursing? Hmm, let's see. Since I love children, especially toddlers and preschoolers, I would probably open and run a day care center. I have two nieces, ages 19 months and 3 years. They are a lot of fun! I love to color with them and play Barbies and fingerpaint and makes things with playdough!

But seriously, I don't see myself ever leaving the nursing profession. It's the only thing that I ever wanted to do with my life and there is soo much that you can do with a nurses license. I can work with children, adults, babies, etc. The pay isn't bad either, although it could be better. There are things about my profession that I am not proud of (such as nurses "eating their young") but I refuse to be a part of that! I've said this before and I'll say it again. Imagine what could be accomplished if all nurses stuck together and demanded changes! It would be incredible.

I would be a full time housewife and mother. Hey, I already do that. Of course, I would be dirt poor, but we could just live on love, my husband would really enjoy that!

i would be a pilates instructor or go back to teaching dance....i would dedicate more time to making recycling more accessible and user friendly for local communities and HOSPITALS...i would buy a potter's wheel and make pots and plates and sushi dishes....plant more trees.....walk dogs at the pound.....

geez...i guess i could do many of these things while an RN...but bear with me ya'll....i am still wading through the terminal trenches of school here.

wait until i get a DEFINITE schedule...then i will be ALL OVER this town!

(puppies prancing, twigs snappin', styrofoam degenerating, powerhouse initiated!!! what a spectacle!):roll :chuckle :roll

i can't wait!:D
