Imagine:
Airline pilot: "Tower, I have lost my landing gear, please have emergency equipment standing by."
Tower: "We're short on emergency equipment tonight, just do the best you can."
or
Doctor: "I need a suture tray."
Central supply: "sorry, we're out, just do the best you can."

"when you are given lemons make lemonade", do the best you can and one of my personal favorites "you people do this to yourselves by calling out and cancelling OT". Oh so it is our fault??? Excuse me, who is responsible for staffing the unit?? MANAGEMENT!!!! I usually answer "You have to have enough lemons to make lemonade, would it be the best I could if it was you in one of these beds and would you prefer someone come in and infect the entire staff so we can spread it through the entire facility???" What about when they pull someone and we protest and their comeback is "Well when you are short we send people to you!" Oh so sending me som eone that knows nothing about ICU is helpful??????
Now you know how I chose this screen name!!

I love a snappy comeback. I'll file that one away for later use.
Great thread nell, I love the analogy.

The Ulitmate Favorite: Its in the central core...... And just where is the Central Core?
Its in the room where the doo hickys hang?
If you needed help all you had to do is call?, If you could have gotten to the phone dont they think you would have...
Short staffing: Well we have a meeting today so we can discuss it and we will have the staff meeting during the shift..... Isnt that when you need your people on the floor?????
In surgery: As the patient crashes and everyone is having a party at the desk..... Well you could have just hollared out at us... we were right here for you....and when you did hollar they mysteriously disappear like David Copperfield was there

This is why nurses need to unionize, why is it that the staffing is always good when JCAHO is coming? I am seriously considering selling realestate.

My all time favorite is "We apreciate that you have been working your butts off due to short staffing and high patient acuity. We apreciate it so much that we got you pizza"
Neither me or my patients care about pizza (that I won't have time to eat). What we want is safe staffing.
