If you could do anything in nursing

Nurses General Nursing

Published

If you could be in any area of nursing other than the one you are already involved in, and didn't have the constraints of time, training or location, what would you choose?

I would be a flight nurse--(someone would have to medicate me to get me on anything that leaves the ground---I border on phobic of flying !!!) I'd be a GREAT flight nurse too!!! Too bad I can't do it on the ground.:D ;)

I think that I would have to say ER or family practice...........I know, they are totally opposite. I did my 5-week full-time preceptorship in ER just before I graduated and LOVED it.........but due to my husband being in school and working when we first got married (long story, blah, blah)....I took a dayshift LTC job instead of nights in ER..........in hindsight should've taken the ER position anyway.

I have also worked in Family Practice and LOVED it........loved my patients, relationship-building, being "their" nurse, etc.........but the pay stunk, so I left.............once again, in hindsight should've stayed......

Anyway, that was the long version, sorry!!

If I could be in any area of nursing without time constraints (what a dream come true that would be!!!) ---- I'd stay in LTC --- without time constraints I could spend even more time holding someone's hand, putting my arms around them, listening, comforting, and sometimes even crying with them. I absolutely love taking care of my residents ---- I've often worked late because I've taken the time to listen, comfort, etc --- and then there's still the forever med pass that has to be done ---- with no time constraints ---- well, I'd just love my job even more!!!

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

I would LOVE to do home health follow-ups for post-partal women and their families. I want to help them w/breastfeeding or bottlefeeding issues, sleep problems, self-and-baby-care questions that never were addressed in the birth center or hospital due to time constraints. I never feel like there is enough time for me to work with them to my satisfaction in the hospital and they go home with so many questions. I try, but time is so short with early discharge that is standard today!

I think doing this, if nothing else, I would just be a reassuring reference person for them. Had MY way, EVERY WOMAN who gave birth would have at least ONE postpartum home health assessment visit, that would be covered by insurance or medicaid, to reassure them they are "normal" and NOT crazy! They are just POST- PARTAL and that this, too shall pass! KWIM?

I **really** want to do this one day. I think MANY concerns and questions persist long after discharge from the hospital and so many families feel lost and alone out there. I want them to know they are NOT alone!

I would like to do something with wellness. I got tired of trying to treat the wages of poor health habits in others. Would like to deal with people who have decided to do something to keep themselves healthy.

Specializes in ICU, nutrition.

I would be a nursing instructor. I plan to before I retire.

I would work overseas with an aid organisation...Might actually do it, but not until I lose my dog....

I'd like to work overseas too...but not til I lose my kids.

CRNA! of course, i plan to be one in a few years though. for now the OR is the best nursing job i have had.

Denzel Washington

Colin Powel

Bishop Desmond Tutu

Carol Burnett

Lenny Kravitz

Michael Jackson (and strongly suggest some bronzing powder)

Former President Bill Clinton

and Tommy Lee Jones.

Lenny K. can he be my patient?

anyway...

If it were a perfect world, I would like to be an educator, going from school to school, teaching safe sex to all the students starting in middle school. Maybe earlier. If it were a perfect world, I wouldnt have to, would I?

I would say the word "CONDOM"

I would teach safer sex, not abstinence.

I would show the kids how to properly use a condom.

I would have a person HIV positive come with me to say a few words, along with his son.

I would show graphic documentaries about AIDS and the end stages of the disease process.

I would give out condoms at the end of each presentation, and be available for private counseling.

I would certainly try to get across that abstinence is the only sure way to prevent STDs, but we've got to live in the real world if we ever really want to get the upper hand on this health issue.

Peace and health/happiness to all.

I really shouldn't answer this thread, as I am not qualified since I am working my dream job.
