I am 51 y/o, is it too late? (need honesty)

Published

I know it's not too late to go to LPN school but I am very concerned about my age and it being a factor in getting a job when thru with school. I've given most of my life to kids, home, marriage and now that my responsibilities are minimal, I think it's time for me. Please be honest with your opinions. We will not qualify for any financial aid and I don't want to start something that will not produce a job when thru. Not counting a year of studying.

Yes, hindsight is most definitely 20/20. :crying2: If I had the last 20 years to relive I would have thought of myself some, but can't go back and undo mistakes.

Opinions please, even brutal ones are welcome. :)

Well everyone, I made 92 percentile on the NET test, really surprised all the office workers at the school, even impressed the instructor, considering the fact I only have a GED. But it's been many years since I have worked and I may have a problem with even finding a record that I did work there. Seems like the instructor isn't much on personal references so If I don't get accepted this will be what does me in. If I can't get what she needs I'm going to consult with the asst. administrator and see what I can work out, if anything. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. :)

ps- seems so unfair as now I have time for me and almost 0 responsibility at home, no obstacles but this.:sniff:

I'm 47 and almost half way through an LPN program, I plan on bridging to RN. My friend is in the same class and she's 52. So you have my answer

Do it now. I am 55, just completed LPN, have not started work yet but am looking foward to it. I had sluggish start to get back in the study groove, but found another student to study with and that helped a lot. Or study groups are good too. I had to give up a whole year of my life, because there is no time for anything but school, but that was time spent on myself. If you can find a program that is 18 months instead of 1 year, it would probably be a little easier. I had very little financial assistance with no other means of support except draining my savings so am looking forward to earning some money to replace some of that. But I do feel it was money well spent. Good Luck:wink2:

Isn't being a homemaker and mom considered job experience? I was a stay at home mom for over five years and it was way harder than any desk job I ever had...

A lady in my class started at 55, graduated at 57. She never felt it was too late for her because, as she put it "I finally did something for myself. It's never too late to do something for myself."

She now works in LTC and loves it, which was what she wanted since the first day of our LTC clinicals.

I would love to know how this has worked out to date? Hopefully things are going in a much more positive direction....

Wandeah: I am 50 (will be 51 in December) and am currently in my first semester of NS. I honestly don't feel I'm too old for this....I think the hardest part for me is while my kids are grown and (supposedly) my husband is an adult and can take care of himself, I find it hard to take myself out of that "mommy/wife" mode and give this the 150% it deserves. That being said, I'm probably pulling a low-B average right now...so I am going to work on shifting priorities a bit and coming through my first semester on a high night in preparation for the second...which means someone else gets to bake cookies, play Santa, wrap, decorate, etc....lolol!!

I have heard though the grapevine that there is a lady in her 60's not only getting her BSN but also living in the dorms.

Good luck to you

I have just a little different opinion. Getting a job will NOT be a problem (well as an LPN it's more likely you'll have a problem - due to lack of need - you said be brutility honest). But the thing is if you go for your RN it's not too late.

The thing I see the biggest problem with is that once your out of school, and you get a job - it might be too much for a 53 year old body. I'm saying this as a 35 year old - it was too much for me. I put my 1 year in (at two different hospitals) and went on to do residential home health care - as well as of today I start subbing as a school nurse.

If you are physically fit, and mentalily fit and feel up to the challenge I say do it by all means! But if you are not fit (physically/mentally) then think hard if you really REALLY want to do this.

You wanted honesty - I'm giving it. Truly - most hospitals don't hire alot of LPN's anyway - LPN's get stuck most of the time in Nursing homes (I'm sorry - you guys - but around here that is true). Anyway - good luck in whatever you decide.

As I always say - if there's a will there's a way :)

I am 47 and will graduate in 12/08/06 and I truely believe it is never too late! I would not have done this when I was younger because like you I raised my kids and after they were in school worked at a job I liked and then a job I hated. I thought it is my turn now and I want to do something I really feel will make a difference in someone's life. Not to mention it will let me work three days a week and be off with my husband who workd 24 on and 48 off. Do not even hesitate...go down and apply. If you get to where you do not want 12 hour shifts then what other job will allow you to work when you want being one day a week if you decide. Good Luck.

Never is too late. My class has a 50 yo and a 52 yo. My mom went back to school at 59 for corrections, she was hired. The 50yo in my class was hired as an extern at the ER and she plans on staying there when she gets her RN.

I had an uncle that loved school and was a history buff and was taking history classes when he was 79. (he had 3 girl friends too!) I don't know how he did it!

coming from a 21 year nursing student, i have to tell you, i feel like the odd ball in the bunch!!! iam the youngest in my class! everyone in class is in there 30's, 40's, 50's, 1 man is even in his 60's!!! its great for me though because i feel like i have 50 mothers :). its never too late to fullfil your dreams and if you dont then you will regret it for the rest of your life. please go back to school. nothing keeps your soul younger like continuing your education and expanding your knowledge

I am 50 and in my first semester of nursing school. My class only has one other person that is 50, the rest are 30 and below. The class that is one semester before me has over half that are 45 and above. I don't think age has anything to do with it. I have seen no discrimination and it is one place that age doesn't make a difference. Go for it.
