I am wating to go into lpn class with a felony

I understand what you are saying. Some school will accept you with a criminal background and other schools will not accept you sadly, as most employers seem to not believe in second chances. I see that you are in Ohio and i heard that nurses with a felony in their background cannot work in Nursing Homes because of a mandated law. I say nursing homes because this is where most LPNs reside. Here in illinois, in the chicagoland area, there are some schools you can Attend for LPN and RN with a criminal history. I personally know quite a few nurses that work in nursing homes here with multiple felony and misdemeanor convictions on their record, in fact, i know one LPN who has been to prison and now works agency and nursing home. From what i am hearing, Ohio is one of those more hash states thats not too fond of having nurses with backgrounds working in the healthcare field...Personally, i do not know of any nurses who have finished school for either LPN or RN who has been denied a license. I completely understand your frustration. I have a similar background no felony though. It can be hard but whatever you do don't give up. I started classes earlier in Jan and due to my financial aid situation I had to drop my classes but now that I got all my financial situation fixed I am going back as soon as the next quarter starts. I believe the only problem you may have is after completing school when potential jobs will check your background but other than that honesty is the best policy. I have a feeling you'll be ok just because I can relate but if your passion is to be a nurse don't let anything get in your way, just go ahead and do it! No one is stopping you but yourself. i heard tht ohio was a state that is pretty tough on hiring felony convicted healthcare workers. I also heard that Ohio has a house bill that prohibits felony convicted nurses and others for working in Long term care facilities (Nursing Home). IF you are going to school to be a LPN more likely you will be working in a nursing home, and in your state you will not be able to. HOWEVER, here in Chicago, Illinois, there are many nurses that have felony convictions that work in a healthcare setting. I personally know of quite a few LPNs and RNs with criminal backgrounds, in fact one of the nurses has been to prison and now works two nursing jobs. I believe Illinois is a more leninent state over other states. I have never known a nurse who has wrote the NCLEX-PN(practical nursing or NCLEX-RN denied their license due to a past criminal background. Many employers here dont hold your background over your head, especially if didnt happen while you were licensed, however other employers do. Simply put: in chicago, illinois, nurses can work with a criminal background in nursing homes and staffing agencies, however as a felony convicted nurse, it might be hard to land a job in the hospital. Some facilities have on their application that they do not hire nurses or healthcare workers with a criminal history. I would say call your board of nursing in your state before you waste you time and money before

you found out they will not giving you a license.

Every situation is different, and of course you'll have to ask your state board of nursing. Schools often turn people down because it would be unjust to have students with felony convictions spend time and money to attend and then be ineligible to sit for the NCLEX.

I just know these nurses personally. The one that has been to prison she is a personal friend of the family. She was denied her license initially, but she asked the board of nursing what could she do to get her license, and they asked for 8 letters of recommendations from teachers, pastors, friends, etc. The reason why they did this to her is because she had been in prison more than once. Also, my aunt when has a criminal background(2 counts of felony and a misdemeanor) and she works, she recently got her license as of may 2009, and everything went fine. After she passed the NCLEX-RN, she had to go downtown and have a meeting with the BON people in here in CHicago. They asked her about her background and after she told them that she had assaulted two police officers and got the felonies, they said ok, we know that people are not perfect and that police can be crooked. THey told her to expect her license soon and they sent her on her way. After she got her license which took less than a month, she had three job offers in less than two weeks, here in long term care, but here in chicago, LTC starts off more than the hospitals. Also, a friend of hers in the nursing program had SIX felony convictions for assault, bsttery, bugulary and the list goes on and she was granted her license and she now works. I wish you the best in your endeavor, but OHio seems like a strict state. I think illinois is pretty easy going for the most part.

What schools were they able to attend to here in Chicago? I'm in the same situation and I already been denied one school because of the felony I have. I'm on probation until next year and once I'm done my case will be dismiss. Thanks!!

Hello,

I am in a similar situation. I have a felony drug conviction from 15 years ago and am trying to get into a nursing program. The problem I am having is all the schools have no problem with my past but they all require an approval from the BON for them to accept me into the school. However, no one anywhere seems to have information on how to get this approval. The website offers zero information and all the phone numbers listed just give prompts for more numbers to call. All of which are either disconnected or hang up on you, sometimes after a very long hold time. I have yet to speak to a person. I have even tried sending an e-mail question and left messages on the few numbers that do work. I have recieved no reply and I have been trying for more than 9 months now. I know my offense is waiverable in most states do to the length of time and no other history. Does anyone know how to get this done in Chicago? I am at my wits end.
