I have wanted to be a nurse for years

Published

Hello! I'm 25 years old and I am a CNA. Nursing has always been a goal for me, but sadly I haven't even taken the first step. I decided to have two children, and have gone through alot of personal situations. So here I am 25, soon to to be 26 in August, and I have decided that this has got to be the time to do it. I have always had some fear in failing, or not even making it into Nursing School, I know many of you here have probably felt the same way. Anyhow, I'm new to this site, and I am hoping for some words of encouragement, if that's not to much to ask:nuke:. Thanks for taking the time in reading my thread. :flwrhrts:

nurses who come to allnurses prior to and during nursing school have a much higher chance of making it through than those with no support group/ knowledge base to lean on, so you have started off on the right foot. (not a scientific statement but one I'd bet is true!) Eat, sleep, breathe the positive helpful threads on these forums and don't be afraid to ask questions, you will go far! there are nursing specialties you may be interested in later that require a high GPA to get into so aim for a 4.0 and if you "fail" you will still have graduated with a 3.5 or higher and be a great nurse with many open doors ahead of you!

Honey...relax! You are still a young one with all the time in the world. I walked into the world of nursing as an MA at the age of 33 and finally got my nursing license when I turned 40! You have plenty of time. Don't feel like you can't do it...you have a good base in which to start! Being a CNA you are familiar with a lot of medical terms and have worked with nurses. You may even have a head start in critical thinking. I say go ahead and apply...give it all you have. Why not? And, you will always have the support of the groups here at AllNurses. I know they got me through LONG nights of studying and wanting to pull the hair out of my head! Check out the student forums here, especially the pre-nursing student area. There are a lot of people who are new to the whole process of going through nursing school...and you will find a lot in common with many of them. Good place to bounce study tips off of one another too!

Good luck to you! Congrats on taking the first steps!

Do it, Do it. I became a nurse at the age of 40 and it was the best decision I ever made. You CAN do it. Just take the first step, apply to nursing school, once you're in you will have a great support system and you always have us:heartbeat:yeah::redpinkhe

Best of luck,

I was in your shoes almost 20 years ago. I was a CNA and had always wanted to be a nurse, too, but felt stuck in the CNA job. One day I called one of the local nursing schools to inquire about the program and the advisor invited me up for a chat, so I went. I left there signed up for two pre-requisite classes (A&P1 and Nutrition). Shortly after I started, I found out I was pregnant at 21. I took the next semester off to have the baby, and then went back, two classes at a time, sometimes three, and almost always one during summer session. After my husband left, I was afraid that I would never be able to get through nursing school, but with the help of some very good friends, I managed to work part-time, go to nursing school full-time, and still manage to raise my daughter alone. After I finished with my ASN, I went right back to school and graduated with my BSN 3 semesters later.

It can be done. Get a good support system of family, friends, and other *supportive* nurses. Hang out here on the allnurses forums and you will learn so much.

I am 27 and still a few steps behind you, so you are not alone! i have always wanted to be a nurse, but after the birth of my son in 2007, I thought that i would never have the time to work full time, go to nursing school, and see my son. so i put it off a little bit longer. Now I have been laid off from my job and I see it as the opportunity I need to start the career I really want. I am going to take a CNA course at the Red Cross while being on the wait list to start a nursing program at my college.

Just know that you are not alone, and if this is something you really want, then you will find a way to do it! Good Luck!

I walked into the nursing profession at 26, again a few steps behind you, didn't even have my CNA, just got myself a job at the local hospital as an aide and signed up for my prerequisites for the nursing program. Four years later I had my ASN (I took a slight detour... once I started the nursing program the first time, I got "cold feet" and switched my major to art education, but later went back).

You can do it... go for it!! :)

You're way ahead of me. I'm 38 and trying to decide between CNA training or MA training or PCT training. Just hoping and praying to get a foot in the door.

YOU CAN DO IT!!!Trust me you can. I was a CNA for 2 years then became a PCT. I had two kids- then got divorced. I made a decision- (this is important!!) I started taking prerequisites and after finishing them got into nurse school on my first try. It was hard- but I did it. YOU have to make the DECISION that you are going to do it. If you set your mind to it--YOU CAN!!!

GOOD LUCK!!:yeah:

Thanks so very much for all of your responses. I truly appreciate it!! It really helps me. You are all great people, I'm so happy to have found this place.
