I want to become Male nurse but am under qualified

Published

Hi,

My name is Anthony and I graduated out of school jus about 5 years ago and I realize that I am not where I want to be with my degree (English) and career. I want to go back to school and I been looking at becoming a nurse and doing an accelerated nursing program in Massachusetts. I have look into all the prerequisites and unfortunately I neither have the gpa in the required fields or overall to get into any programs. I graduated from curry college in 2007 and I wasn't as serious with my schooling till my later years when I excelled. My freshman year I took most the pre requisites for what would now get me into any nursing program in the state and I barely passed.

I understand now the mistakes I have made with the way I focused on my education before and I'm looking to start over and change some of my weaknesses (sciences) into my strengths . I would like to enter into the accelerated nursing program with any school that would give me a chance. I realized this maybe a field I want to get into after having surgery and spending a good time in and out of hospitals. I respect the field and it is a solid way of putting in hard work, feeling good about yourself, and being compensated in a manner that is rewarding of the hard work you must put into it.

I know it's never to late to change your future and I want to make my change now while I'm still able. This is a life change now jus a career change. I want to give myself the best chance possible to attain the chance of being accepted into a school and proving my worth. My research has show there are really only 6 schools in mass that have this accelerated rn program. My old school curry college, umass Boston and Amerherst, Regis, mgh and mass school of pharm and health sciences. Is there any where else? As well as i have heard since I'm a male and I'm interested in nursing this can be very helpful in my efforts. Is there a way I can use this to my advantage? Community college might be best to freshen up my grades but is ere anything else I can do or don't know about yet. I really appreciate any advice this is something I want to start now and make the changes needed to make it happen.

I appreciate everyones advice

Anthony

I hate to point out, if you have a passing grade already in one course, you can not simply "retake" it without special permission. If they know you are doing so simply to "boost the GPA", they will refuse you.

Sure you can! People retake classes ALL THE TIME trying to get a better grade either to up their GPA or to meet the requirements of a program they want to get into. No special permission has been needed when I, or my husband, or my classmantes, or anyone else I know has done this.

I appreciate everyone's advice. I apologize for not being familiar with what is acceptable and not acceptable to say on this site. I was jus tryin to catch peoples attention to get help. Not trying to cause anybody to get upset.

I thought doin the accelerated nursing program would save me time and money. I don't know if I can afford four years of college.. I thought this would be the cheapest way and most efficient. I can handle the work load and I will take the courses in community college for my pre requisites if that's what is needed.

everyone's opinions have been helpful. I'm jus trying to get started and this is what I need to help me get focus on what exactly is needed to move forward. Taking one step at a time

you might want to see if northeastern and bc, have accelerated programs.

not sure, but do know that both of their nsg programs are excellent.

Head over to the "students" tab, especially under pre-nursing students. You'll get a lot of good info. Accelerated BSN programs are very intensive, and making A's on prereqs is only the tip of the iceberg. Just because an accelerated BSN may save you time and money does not mean it is the best fit for you. Do your homework because there's a lot of different options in this field.

IDK Erik, "GentlemanNurse" sounds like an adult movie title, maybe a series. I looked at the subtitle "I want to become Male nurse but am under qualified" and thought, (?) This has got to be another SDN troll, right?

Maybe its a state based thing. I know in PA, "D" or better means.............you are stuck with that grade. I was considering taking writing classes and realized I had a horrible grade in some lower english class. I was going to retake it then move on up into "creative writing" and such. No such luck, wasn't allowed. My "C" was good enough to pass and retaking it was not an option. Dean even explained to me the whole reason for it was...................yep.............you guessed it................:nurse: program. Too many people getting "D's" and "C's" in Intro. to Psych or English Comp. 101 and retaking it to get an advantage over other nursing program applicants. He even used the term "weeding out process" when explaining to me I couldn't retake it.

I decided I would pay the extra money, go to a four year college for the writing courses instead. Nope. They looked at my transcripts and said pretty much the same thing.

I didn't think troll, just someone who isn't sick of the "MaleNurse" label yet. But yeah, I read that topic title and was like " gotta read this one". lol

Try looking into some online options.. If your GPA is under 2.0, your not going to have much luck.. Good Nursing programs are competitive, so that means you compete with other students to get a place in the class. This acceptance into the programs is generally based on your GPA, grades in A&P,Micro., & chem , and a pre-entrance exam. Nursing School is not quick or easy...and most of the time it is not cheap. And it is this way for a reason... Nursing school is TOUGH! You eat, sleep, & breath it.. and you think it will get better after you graduate..WRONG!! lol:lol2: Then you get to EARN your distinctive title by working under very stressful conditions, with other stressed out people, taking care of sick, stressed out patients, who also bring stressed family member's with them. O-ya, and your orders come from Stressed out Dr's! lol... I think you can get the picture. BTW.. If you are already apologizing to other's on a message board for possibly offending them, you need to "thicken your skin"! And, remove Nurse from your name before someone "REPORTS" you to the state of MA and get you into trouble;)

Nurses are as sweet as pie, when your their patient. When they become your co-worker their like sharks!lol :twocents:

Very good advice above - (to put it gently) yes in deed, you need to change your screen name as you are not a nurse (yet).

You may want to explore all your options first - accelerated programs may not be your best choice - it is quite expensive and they normally have very strict guidelines for acceptance. check out some ADN programs in the meantime.

BUT first, make sure this is the career you really want to pursue (use informational interviews with nurses as a starter and look into the employment outlook in your area - in many parts of the country, it is NOT pretty right now for new grads). Then, if you still want to pursue this career, get your CNA and work as one (while also retaking your prereqs - most schools will take the higher score). . . .

BTW to my knowledge, simply being a male will NOT allow you to get into nursing school easier. They want train strong competent nurses - and you can prove you are worthy by proving it on your prereqs (that you retake)

Try Salem State--they have a direct entry MSN program (appropriate if you have a Bachelors in another field). I'm an alum (& current Master's student) from there, so feel free to PM with questions.

Don't lose hope, I also failed miserably at my state college, to the point where I got kicked out. I freshen up, took all my courses at my community college and was .1 shy of having a 4.0. If I can do it, you can too.

You've received lots of good advice on becoming a nurse.

Unfortunately, we will be unable to help with the becoming a male part:lol2::lol2:
