I want to become Male nurse but am under qualified

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi,

My name is Anthony and I graduated out of school jus about 5 years ago and I realize that I am not where I want to be with my degree (English) and career. I want to go back to school and I been looking at becoming a nurse and doing an accelerated nursing program in Massachusetts. I have look into all the prerequisites and unfortunately I neither have the gpa in the required fields or overall to get into any programs. I graduated from curry college in 2007 and I wasn't as serious with my schooling till my later years when I excelled. My freshman year I took most the pre requisites for what would now get me into any nursing program in the state and I barely passed.

I understand now the mistakes I have made with the way I focused on my education before and I'm looking to start over and change some of my weaknesses (sciences) into my strengths . I would like to enter into the accelerated nursing program with any school that would give me a chance. I realized this maybe a field I want to get into after having surgery and spending a good time in and out of hospitals. I respect the field and it is a solid way of putting in hard work, feeling good about yourself, and being compensated in a manner that is rewarding of the hard work you must put into it.

I know it's never to late to change your future and I want to make my change now while I'm still able. This is a life change now jus a career change. I want to give myself the best chance possible to attain the chance of being accepted into a school and proving my worth. My research has show there are really only 6 schools in mass that have this accelerated rn program. My old school curry college, umass Boston and Amerherst, Regis, mgh and mass school of pharm and health sciences. Is there any where else? As well as i have heard since I'm a male and I'm interested in nursing this can be very helpful in my efforts. Is there a way I can use this to my advantage? Community college might be best to freshen up my grades but is ere anything else I can do or don't know about yet. I really appreciate any advice this is something I want to start now and make the changes needed to make it happen.

I appreciate everyones advice

Anthony

Hi,

I went to Curry's accelerated program. This may have already been said, but if it's been 5 years since the last time you took your sciences, you can take them over and boost your grades. My gpa in my first degree was not good (extenuating life circumstances) but I aced all my prereqs. Take them at a local community college (much less expensive).

One thing I do want to point out that wasn't made clear to me before I started. If you want a job in a Boston hospital as a new grad nurse, you best get a bachelor's degree as you won't get hired with an associate's degree. Good luck!

Yeah sorry dude but I gotta jump on the "drop the MALE nurse" wagon, as well as the --"gotta earn the title before you can use it" wagon as well. Sorry. And please don't take my comments or anyone elses as anything other then trying to help you out. Good luck with your endevor. Hopefully you will find something that works for you.

Maybe its a state based thing. I know in PA, "D" or better means.............you are stuck with that grade.

I'm also in PA, but in my experience, it is definitely possible to retake a course. At the school were I took my pre-nursing course, you can retake a class and both grades will appear on your transcript and calculate into your overall GPA. I believe the nursing department at that school used the grade from the "first successful attempt" to determine your pre-req GPA, however. Policies vary from school to school.

Maybe its a state based thing. I know in PA, "D" or better means.............you are stuck with that grade. I was considering taking writing classes and realized I had a horrible grade in some lower english class. I was going to retake it then move on up into "creative writing" and such. No such luck, wasn't allowed. My "C" was good enough to pass and retaking it was not an option. Dean even explained to me the whole reason for it was...................yep.............you guessed it................:nurse: program. Too many people getting "D's" and "C's" in Intro. to Psych or English Comp. 101 and retaking it to get an advantage over other nursing program applicants. He even used the term "weeding out process" when explaining to me I couldn't retake it.

I decided I would pay the extra money, go to a four year college for the writing courses instead. Nope. They looked at my transcripts and said pretty much the same thing.

This sounds like a school thing, not a state thing. I'm in PA and the schools I've been to allow you to retake C or lower. Also, if you're going to a different school....all you do is just not transfer in the courses you want to retake and there should be no issue. I know some nursing programs won't recognize retaken classes- I had classmates who were applying to another nursing program who were telling me if they retook a course the average grade between the two would be used to determine the course grade.
