Nursing Students Online Learning

Published

During my shift at the hospital I work at, I was talking to several nurses who know I'm an Excelsior student. This is a unit I very much want to work in when i graduate. To make a long story short, the charge nurse walks up in the middle of the convo, and asks about the program. She asked, "what about clinicals?". When I explained how the program worked, she replied "Well I hope they don't hire you for this unit, I don't see how that sort of program can produce a competent nurse." Ouch! I know she doesn't do the hiring, and when the person that does do the hiring sees my qualifications, I'll be hired on the spot. I also knew this sort of discrimination exists, but had never experienced it first hand. Very disheartening.

different strokes for different folks

I agree.

It's a public board, and you take that risk of not getting what you're looking for when you start a thread.

Exactly, so when you find yourself at this point:

and further south yet..........

feel free to check out, again.

Take care.

Thank you, finally. This thread has deviated so far from the initial purpose, that it would not offend me if it was binned all together.

I did not intend this to be a Traditional V. NonTraditional thread. Nor was it a "who is qualified" for nontraditional thread. It was, as earlier stated, to garner support which is badly needed considering the jolt one comment from someone I have alot of respect for made.

Again, thanks to those with insightful/compassionate input.

Hi. I graduated from a traditional BS in Nursing program recently, & I know people at work who are doing both kinds of programs that you guys have been discussing here. You know what? Just do what works best for you, don't put others down cuz they didn't follow the same path as you, & I honestly think that a person's intelligence, persistence, & dedication to hard work matter so much more than which type of school or program you graduated from.

Well said. Do what works for you and quit denigrating others' educational choices. Behave professionally and quit worrying so much what others think. If you are happy with your choices, and confident, that is all that matters.

Also remember, there need not be a "winner" in education debates. Just respect everyone shares similiar struggles on his/her path to professional nursing. And show some respect HERE on this thread, please.

Hello everyone,

I hear what you are all saying. I'm no noob. Been in the field for almost 16 years at one level or another, and you're right, there are far worse insults to be experienced. That being said, the reason for my surprise was due more to the 'who' than the 'what'. I never expected it from this particular person. I guess it goes to show, never let your guard down. I guess on some level what she said kind of hurt. But, oh well! I fired back with: "Ya, I guess it would piss me off too if someone achieved something in a mere 8 months what took you almost 4 years to achieve!" LOL...childish, but retribution nonetheless!

Hello from another EC student!! I too meet the same reaction but like others on the board all I can say is to brush it off. "Whatever"...my favorite phrase when dealing with those unfortunate enough to not fully understand. And like you said - she doesn't do the hiring. Oh, but try to cut down on those comments...they'll come back to haunt you.

:)

Ya, is this sticking to the issues? Your sarcasm speaks volumes.

Speculation about me being a former EC student has come up before. That's why I thought it was funny. I guess if you didn't know the history of our debates on this subject, you might misinterpret the context of the remark.

:coollook:

i'd simply point out ec's accreditation and it's status as a center for nursing education excellence (http://www.nln.org). ask them what designation their school has, and ask them about grade inflation (which is rampant in many programs). what was their nclex pass rate? i'd ask them what their qualifications as an educational analyst are. then i'd tell them they need get in touch with the nln and share their expertise.

i don't know what it is about the medical professions that tend to attract personality types who are just itching to put someone else down. that's a behavior i've also noted from some uber-paramedics. they are the only one qualified to push d-50, like it's brain surgery.

I maybe new in the business (35 years as a Nurse) but I have yet had a Patient what my school's rank in anything or what my class rank was, all they wanted to know is could I help them, what's the medicine I giving them for, or when they could have something for pain. In fact I have never ask another Nurse what her class rank was. I know these things are important. But School is such a little thing in one nurse's life. An aren't we in the business of helping? Or am I having a 6o's flashback again. Or like most of the time miss the whole point of the last post
