David,
I haven't gotten to this level yet w/nursing (still a student) but, I have to tell you... the hardest part is already over: you made it through NS! YEAH!!!! Pat yourself on the back for what you have accomplished so far...
Years ago I went for licensure for my Cosmetology degree. I failed my practical my 1st time out (surprising, as I expected it to be the written portion). The next time: I kicked butt! Only missed maybe 5-15 pts.
Anyways,my pt here is: don't give up, hang in there & take the advise of others here who r experienced.
YOU CAN DO IT!

Hey David.
I am so sorry to hear this
.
I want you to know that the NCLEX is NO indication of how you will be as a nurse. I personally feel that it's something we need to go through in order to practice, but I don't feel that it fully assesses our nursing skills or future success as a nurse!
My advice to you is to reschedule your exam asap. It's important to at least set another date and study schedule. (I know you mentioned bartending in the meantime, I just hope that you won't put your boards off longer than you need)
I remember you saying at some point that you had some difficulty with test questions in school--it sounds like you need to work more on test-taking strategies than anything else, and YOU WILL DO IT, and WILL DO JUST FINE!! (A friend of mine did not pass, just took it again and passed--Please don't give up hope) Try doing as many practice questions as you can as this alone will increase your score for the next time....
Most importantly now, take some time for yourself and leave the NCLEX craziness behind the next couple days to clear your head and de-stress the best way you can (fishing IS great therapy :) ) Then get back on track and kick butt on that exam :)
I know you'll do it. Bestest wishes to you. Everything WILL work out--just keep that chin up
