I need some encouragement

Published

Hi all,

I am taking some of my basics right now, and i am really down on myself, I am thinking that this is going to take forever!!!!!!!!! What are some of the things ya'll did to help yourself/each other out during these time???? i really would apperciate some advice.

Taylor,

Hang in there! With persistence, you'll get where you want to be. I know school keeps you busy, but you might consider doing some hospital vollunteer work. That way you'll get to see nurses up close and you'll see that there really is light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck!

I still have until this May before I graduate. And I've already been attending college for 4 years now. It's taken me an extra year because I had to take some intro. courses because of having been out of school for 13 years before heading to college. I just keep reminding myself of all the reasons that I am going through all this. That I've been waiting for at least 10 years for this. If I can manage having waited that long, I can manage just a little more waiting. AD trust me when I say I'm not usally a very patient person at all. I keep reminding myself of the example that I'm setting for my 4 daughters. And the support that I find daily in my husband. It'll all be worth every ounce of effort and time in the end. Just take it one day at a time. It'll go by faster than you think!

i agree w/ the other posters and i might add that i kept "shorter" goals. i would sit and figure out how i could combine the classes each semester to get them done in the shortest amount of time (since most have to go in sequence).

just getting all my pre-reqs done "before" starting the program was my goal for a longggg time.....that kept me sane. if i wouldv'e only thought about the END...i don't know if i couldv'e done it?

and now i'm in my 3rd semester of an r.n. program after 2 1/2 yrs. of school! so, you can do it, if you're like me, then you need to set short term goals...achieve thoughs and then set new ones! & before you know it you'll be in the nursing program!

Hi Taylor,

I hope I don't sound old but I have personally found that all good things take time and if you hang in there it will all be worth it. So, keep up the good work and good things will happen in your life.

I will keep you in my prayers.

I think we've all had thses moments! I know I have! What I did was download the guide of all the required courses and I would plan out each semester, then cross out the classes once I completed them. This way I could see that I was making progress and crossing out the required general ed classes was the best! Now I'm finally in my last semester of general ed and nursing pre-reqs. The thought that from now on it's all nursing is amazing! Now my biggest obstacle is getting into a program! I actually have a ticker on my computer counting down to applying to the program! I am taking this semester one week at a time! Week one down, week two down, week 3 down, etc! Just think of short term goals. Right now I'm concentrating on getting to December! LOL! The time really does fly by and it is so worth it in the end! Just think short term instead of long term!

Taylor,

I know it seems forever; I am 2 years into pre-reqs and am taking my last one now (chemistry-yuk!).

When I get real down, I either go to the 6th floor (nursing floor) of my college and just peak in the windows and walk around or I come here to allnurses.

Feel free to e-mail me when you get down and we can chat.

:yeahthat:

I did something similar to the above poster last semester. I was rejected and facing several exams and quizzes while attending classes, where some of the students in my classes (including one of my lab partners) was recently accepted.

I heard about his/her plans to move forward in nursing education including up coming activities, in which I could not participate. Many times I felt like I was standing still when I should be joining them.

This feeling was especially salient because of other rejected students. Many of whom pointed out (because of anger and sadness) that there is no guarantee I will eventually be accepted. Whereas those students who had been accepted had a letter stating that he/she could move forward in his/her nursing education. :(

So, some days when I had class and I was a little down afterward, I walked over to the empty nursing class rooms and peeked-in. I always pictured myself sitting in those rooms taking notes and participating in lively discussions.

On other days, I walked over to the area where nursing students went to class and labs and watched them enter their classroom. Sometimes I watched from afar and imagined myself doing the same thing within a year. Other times I would chat with a few of them since I knew at least one in the group.

The conversations we had were designed for me to get a feel for them as individual students. I really enjoyed speaking to the few students that were considered to be the top of the class.

These conversations were a reminder that there is NOTHING more special about nursing students then me. Plus, I learned that I have what it takes to succeed since many of the successful students seem to have similar personalities.

I was also reminded that my time will come. I will eventually be accepted and able to complete my education. Especially since there is no reason I can not be one of them some day. :monkeydance:

So, Taylor do not worry. Stay focused, do whatever it takes to remind yourself that you too can become a student nurse, and continue to press forward. By the way, there is a benefit to waiting. The more classes you finish before starting the program, the less you have to take while attending the program. At the rate I am going, I will not have any courses outside of Nursing courses while attending either the ADN or RN-BSN programs, unlike other students. Good luck. :nurse:

Little 'mini' goals really helped me. It helps me to see results now, instead of having to wait until years down the road.

Find a good support system! Good luck to you!

Taylor,

One thing that I found helpful when I got overwhelmed was this: On the first day of class one of the instructors told us it would be tough, we'd have to put our life on hold, etc. Then she said, "Let me ask you a question, how badly do you want it?"

Every time I felt discouraged I'd ask myself "How badly do you want it"? This usually helped me get back on track. that and a good cry.

all of your ideas sound great, I am going to try a combination of them...... BUT what i really want is someone to make a "gentlemans" bet with. To see how hard i am going to push myself. Please help me and push me to get there.

Thanks:chair:

....ya know what that reminds me of........one semester i took algebra, microbiology, double excellerated chemistry all together and my sis said "you CAN'T do it, you'll fail" ... her statement totally pissed me off, but it carried me through every weak moment i had that whole semester..... i NEEDED to prove her wrong & i did.... got 2 "B"'s & an "A".....LOL.

so, if THAT'S what you need then here goes- YOU CAN'T DO IT!!! SORRY.....now think about that whenever you feel weak and let it piss you off enough to keep plugging away!!!!:wink2:
