Shopping for Fall 08
Honestly I don't remember how much I paid for them, but I don't think it was too much. I'm pretty sure they were under $20.

Kingwood College--Online Self-Paced Program
I'm in kingwood's normal ADN program and from what the instructors have said you still have to come in person for your lab and clinical, so they only "online" part really would be lecture. Honestly lectures seem to come straight out of the book anyways and for me personally I get more out of just simply reading the book. Labs are the hands on part that you need, but you will still get that. May be something to think about!

Shopping for Fall 08
I got mine from PRN medical supply off of 1960. The place looks questionable walking in and you really have to dig through the racks to find what you're looking for, but they have things sorted by brand so that makes it a bit easier!

lonestar college nursing????? best school
I'm in the Kingwood program and love it! It has its flaws like any other program but overall I get a very helpful vibe from all the instructors. I just finished my first semester and I had a great clinical instructor and really feel like I learned so much. Also I don't know if you'd be interested in it or not, but Kingwood is launching its online program for students with another degree already. Since you already have a degree that could be something to look into! Best of luck to you!

Shopping for Fall 08
The most comfy, favorite scrub pants I have tried to date are these Dickies: http://www.jascouniform.com/ecom/showdetl.cfm?&Product_ID=18182&CATID=100&LogoObjectGroup_ID=1969 They have the elastic in the back but drawstring in the front, which I love, plenty of pockets, and I am a pretty petite girl so the petite sizes actually fit me which is a rare find for me! Unfortanately they don't carry them in the color I need for school. I'm in Kingwood's program. Not sure if North Harris has different colors or not, but we have to wear teal pants and white scrub tops with the patch on the left arm. Best of luck to you in your first semester!

Hospital job with no experience
I've had no luck getting my foot in the door with the hospitals. Alot of the unit secretary positions want previous experience. I am finishing my first semester of the RN program and alot of the hospitals will hire students as CNA's after first semester. Just look around and see what's out there. It might be helpful to contact their nurse recruiters and see what they say.

Pharmacology at Lone Star College System
I took it online with Wanda Seaback a couple of summers ago. From what I remember it wasn't too bad. I think you had a weekly case study and 4 tests and that was pretty much it. For those of you worried about the tons of reading and 10 chapters per test, you better get used to it! I'm in the RN program now and their aren't enough hours in the day for all the reading. We have tests every other week, usually consisting of tons of chapters. And the ones that only have a few chapters aren't any better because those chapters are over 100+ pages! Lots of reading in a little amount of time is just a fact of life in nursing school! Good luck with pharm and good luck to all of you trying to get into the program!

Career Fair & Resume question
Okay I really need some help from the experts here. I am going to a healthcare career fair tomorrow so I'm polishing up my resume. I'm finishing up my first semester of nursing school and would really like to get my feet wet and start working in a hospital. I currently have a M-F 8-5 customer service job that I've been doing for 5 years. Its just too much with school. I would like to try to get in as an aide or unit secretary or whatever I'm qualified for. At this point I'd take scrubbing toilets just to get my foot in the door! Some of the hospitals that will be at this fair will allow nursing students to work as aides. So my big question is I'm stuck on what to put as my objective. Because really I would work as an aide or unit secretary or admissions or receptionist or just anything to get into that environment. Basically my objective is to get in at a hospital and start learning the ropes so to speak so that when I do finish school I'm familiar with the environment and not in total shell shock. I just don't know how to incorporate that into a nice little objective sentence! Second question is what should I expect at a career fair? I know I should bring lots of resumes and dress professionally. But what actually goes on at a career fair? Do I just make my rounds and talk to people or what? Should I bring anything else? TIA for the help!

Patient's preferences during birth
I'm definately not a nurse yet, still just a student, but your post reminded me of this book I read, Pushed: The Painful Truth About Childbirth and Modern Maternity Care by Jennifer Block. It was a real eye opener. It discussed the frequent use of pitocin and inducing labor and such. I think if you're wanting a natural birth it would be best to seek out a birthing center or midwife. I was watching Baby Diaries on Discovery Health and this woman wanted a natural birth as well in the hospital and her doctor eventually started her on pitocin because she wasn't progressing fast enough. When all was said and done she didn't have a natural birth at all, she had pitocin, and epidural and the doctor used forceps. My friend has had all 3 of hers naturally through a midwife at a birthing center. Maybe try discussing it with your doctor, but if he didn't follow through with your wishes before, chances are he won't this time either.

Question about transferring a patient
Ok I am in my last two days of my CNA class and I really don't know what to do about this! I know the proper procedures for transferring and all that, but I'm a small girl and physically, have not been able to do it on my own. I'm 5'2" and weigh about 115 and just physically do not have any strength! How in the world do I move a patient? Even with help its been very very difficult for me to transfer patients from wheelchair to bed. And moving patients with a draw sheet is also difficult. I can barely get them up like an inch where my partner is getting them much further up. The state test is coming up the first week of January. What do I do if I get transferring? We have to do the state exam on actual residents and of all the ones I've worked with so far, there's not a single one I could do on my own. Everyday when I leave, my entire body is sore, especially my arms and legs! How do I overcome this?

Anyone applying to Cyfair or Kingwood college for Spring08?
I did the Monday/Wednesday nights and Saturday clinicals. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to keep my full time job so I got a schedule that works with it for now. I went in person this morning. I had a friend who tried to do it via email, but then ended up just going in because she was tired of waiting on them. I priced only the required books and it still came out to around $600 or so. Its just hard when you need so many books at once! I went to last weeks orientation. What schedule are you wanting?

Changing a patient's diaper while they are standing ?
Oh my gosh I have a fellow CNA student that keeps calling them pampers as well! I cringe everytime I hear her say it and have even said something to her about it (which is out of line and not my place, but geez have a little more tact!) :trout: I actually wasn't sure what to call them so I was just calling them undergarments! I refuse to call them diapers (even though the residents do.) But now I know briefs is a better term!

Anyone applying to Cyfair or Kingwood college for Spring08?
Memargz35, that sucks that you have to retake pharm! Its silly since its all in the same college district. I'm pretty sure its the same case for Cy-Fair, but I know for kingwood (and most healthcare companies) you need the CPR through the American Heart Association not the Red Cross. NHMCCD does have the CPR, BLS for healthcare providers course. You register under continuing education and its under there. Its not free, but its $42 so cheaper than what you are paying. If you log in and click on search for continuing education courses, type in "CPR healthcare providers" and it will pull up all the classes available. You said Cy-Fair's pass rate isn't that high? That's terrible. Kingwood's is 97%. Like SkyGoddess said at the orientation they are just so warm and friendly and positive. I think its going to be a great atmosphere. They seem really excited to teach and help us learn and just really want us to succeed. I hope Cy-Fair's program is just as helpful. I didn't really research them as much as I should have before applying, but kingwood was closer to home so it all worked out for me. So has everyone registered yet? I went and registered this morning so I'm all set to go! Now I'm just working on getting all those books we need!

kingwood college lvn-adn evening program
Yeah I turned in that intent letter last friday. I filled it out the night i got it and then hand delivered it the next morning. I wanted to make sure it got into the right hands and got there right away! Haha! I choose the mon/tues nights first, then saturday clinical, the day class/sat clinical, then nights friday, thursday and last days friday thursday. I'm taking a CNA class right now in case I have to go days, but for right now I want to have the option to keep my corporate job. CNA would be a huge paycut for me, but I will take it if I have too. But we just bought a new house in kingwood so I'd like to keep my current pay as long as possible. We'd still be fine with me taking a paycut, but I have some expensive habits (shopping! shopping! shopping!) that I'm not quite ready to give up! I like being able to buy what I want, but school is my first priority so I'll give it up if I have too (grudingly! )
