I need advice please! Urgent.

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi everyone! I need on advice on what way to go to become a Registered Nurse. I am based in the Chicago area and want to stay around here for nursing school ( family house is here).

A little background about me.

Please keep in mind that I graduated in May 2015 with a Bachelor of Science degree (Community Health Education) with a GPA of 2.94. I thought of applying to the accelerated nursing program right after but I decided to pursue a Master of Public Health degree (MPH - I love it so far). I will be graduating next year (May 2017) and so far I have a 3.89 GPA.

My MPH degree is 80% sponsored, so I barely have any loans taken out for grad school. However in undergrad, I believe I am in debt of 29k (not worried)

NOTE: I am trying to get into the nursing program for FALL 2017.

Although I still have a year left, several nursing schools require different exams. I have to prepare for that before I apply, one year is an ideal time for me.

Most of the deadlines I have seen are in January 2017 (before I complete my MPH).

Questions that need answers :

I want to know what a reasonable route for me to take to become a registered nurse is.

I am not interested in going for an ADN (no offense, I repeat.. no offense).

I have also looked at graduate entry programs, MEPN.. RUSH, UIC, ELMHURST, DEPAUL (I really only have UIC and Rush's pre-req requirements and RUSH only offers MSN)

Accelerated programs I have seen are either not in the chicago area or require a previous nursing certificate. There are two schools that I meet requirements for and is in the chicago area.

Be prepared for financial aid loan limits for a second bachelors degree, as you have unpaid debt from your first one. I would work for a while and pay down debt and get a better idea of what you want to do.

URGENT ANSWER: why?

Given current student loans and the very likely probability that you (at some point) foresaw a career with your current MASTERS' degree, why are you looking to enroll in a 2nd costly degree before you even embark upon the first career?

"I am not interested in going for an ADN (no offense, I repeat.. no offense)."

The more you repeat it, the more offensive it is.

I can't understand why all of you are being so catty about her saying urgent. One person made the point so move on. If she wants more than one degree why does it matter? It's her who pays the loans and is responsible

Help her out then instead of chastising.

And the post/request is urgent because.......??

Nothing about multiple degrees or student loans is URGENT. Thus, the post is funny.

FYI, it's "SHE who pays"

There's also the fact that all the schools OP is looking into, with 1 exception, are private & have very high tuition.

I totally understand and apologize for the rudeness of others. Pay no mind to the negative comments. You are well on your way to living a happy successful life which others may find intimidating

I see that you're brand spanking new here. Welcome and please do not feel an obligation to apologize for other posters. Everyone is entitled to post their own feelings in a healthy give and take, and do not need scoldings or corrections from others.

She is not well on her way to living a happy life by obtaining possibly three degrees that she doesn't want. She's gone through a LOT of schooling and keeps changing her mind about her career choice AFTER she's already completed the schooling and taken out the loans. No, that is not the path to happiness.

OP, something that may be beneficial for you is to job shadow a nurse. Many people get into nursing only to figure out that it wasn't what they wanted and that they hate it. It's not an urgent matter, but it is a serious issue that you should put a lot of thought and research into.

There are also several forums here for pre-nursing students, as well as a forum about nursing schools and nursing in various states. I would post the links here but I'm on my phone and it's glitchy.
