I am a male and I feel that I am being discrminated :(

Nurses Men

Published

Hi, I graduated last year from LVN school..I had two jobs so far..The first one lasted about 2 months and my second job lasted 5 months..Both jobs ended in termination..Both jobs women were the majority and the supervisors..I feel maybe it is discrimanation..

Sorry guy, but I am also male and have been an RN for over 21 yrs in 4 different states now all hospital based in a variety of positions and I have never seen any male(either RN or LVN/LPN) ever discriminated against. If you fired from back to back positions I think it is time to evaluate yourself and whether or not you are cut out out for nursing. When people were terminated it was mostly justified and related to either something they had done in their practice, patient interactions/complaints or just didn't fit into their institutions framework and ideals.

And not to get off topic here, but as a male I have never been offered a salary comensurate with having testicles(as I saw a discussion recently about men making more than females in nursing) and with the exception of 1 yr as a Nursing Supervisor all of my experience has been bedside pt care from M/S to ER to ICU and back to ER.....

Unfortunately, that isn't enough information to go on. It would help if you posted the situation around the termination.

Just because you got fired from two LVN jobs, that doesn't automatically equal discrimination if they have a valid reason.

My female collegue at work got fired twice from jobs also..She graduated last year also..Maybe she should evaluate her career also..

Bala, I've been around this planet for the better part of a half-century, and one of the things I've learned in that time is to pay attention when more than one person is telling me the same thing. That's when I have to consider that maybe, just maybe, I could be wrong........or my way isn't the correct way.......or something I'm doing may be producing the problems I'm experiencing.

The members are giving you some excellent advice. While I know it doesn't feel good to be criticized, you really ought to pay attention to what people are saying. After all, you did ask for advice, and with your history of difficulties in school and your early nursing career---many of which you have documented here---it would be worth your while to step back and re-assess your situation.

Good luck to you.

Yes, I been around this board for a while also..And yes, I seen people who had a hard time at school..And look at this thread where all males got dropped from the nursing school program..And I guess that does not count either right?

Women get dropped from programs, also. And probably in a proportionate number to men.

You are not being discriminated against. There is another problem. Your job is to figure out what that is, and deal w/it.

Not trying to sound mean...but if this an example of the responses that you give at work, then I can understand why you are having conflict with management.

There is a ton of experience on the board, and you posted nothing other than the fact you are male and got fired from 2 jobs and that doesn't automaticaly scream discrimination.

Others are posting that they haven't seen anything like that, in fact hospitals and nursing programs are PRESSED HARD to get males hired and into programs. I have even seen it posted in the pre-nursing forum where at some schools, males have a LOWER critieria for admission than females. Do you think that's fair?

Folks are trying to give you things to look at.........

...and things like this...won't help you keep a job..

I am the orginal poster.. It is getting better now..I am getting to know some of my CNAs...They know I like to control them and they seem to accept it..They know that I dont let them do what they like now..

On the positive note, I got into trouble because I called a ambulance to pick up a patient from a nursing home..Well, I thought I was going to be written up...The CNAs thought I did the right thing in calling the ambulance..Well, one CNA said to me that, "If you are going to be written up, I will also since I was part of it.."So he told the DON that he should be written up also, LOL..The DON decided not to write me up..I could imagine, that she would have to write up two people in the office...LOL

Now this is pretty bad I think.

If you want us to see your side of the story, you have to give us a real example why the female nurses got preference compared to you. Being fired twice is not one of them. And about your comment that majority of the staff were females....this is nursing, that is going to happen wherever you go.

I have worked in two very different hospitals, one a very small rural hospital and the other one I work in now is a large city teaching hospital. In both of them the men were loved and respected and they also gave respect back to their coworkers (including the CNAs that you like to control).

I do not like your tone..If you are a male, you would know that there is discrimation for male nurses..If you don't think so, then so be it..The world works more complicated then you think..
The tricky thing with posting on message boards is it is impossible to "read" someone's "tone" As an ( :uhoh21:almost) 50 yr old woman with over 30 years of experience in healthcare both as a cna and an LPN and with many more years of work experience outside of it (mostly in retail) believe me -I know all about discrimination-I have seen it...However based on the information you yourself have provided on this board both in this thread and in others my opinion remains firm-TOSYour continuing defensiveness proves the point that you won't take any responsibilty for your actions and learn from them.Good luck with your future endeavors-Peace out....

I am still trying to understand the discrimination thing, but nothing I've read seems to equate to a case of discrimination. The fact that the OP is male and his supervisors have been female doesn't amount to discrimination, as has been mentioned several times previously. That ratio is likely to be quite common throughout his nursing career.

Anybody else see it?

I've read your posts thru the past several months or longer, and you do seem to often be in a position of thinking that everyone's out of step but you.

Lol Bala, I clicked on this thread specifically because I saw that you were the OP.

Like most of the people who have resonded, I too am familiar with your past posts.

I've got the same response a lot of them have-look into yourself for the change. I'd bet a million dollars that this has nothing to do with male discrimination, and everything to do with Bala shark.
