Be careful though, with FMLA- your job as a nurse at the hospital is protected, not neccessarily in your same unit... course if they are short-staffed, shouldn't be a problem
I've been lucky with management, as I've had really good ones so far. I'll come back to this thread to vent sometime I'm sure...
That's horrible! As one Daddy's girl to another I can't imagine how hard it would be to hear that news.. Nice manager for trying to make it easier on a hard working staff member who needs time off for a good reason! Shame on her! That reminds me of when I was recently informed when my grandmother died that I didn't need to take any of my bereavement time since I work midnights and services are during the day. Unbelievable!

Right, you are. I was hospitalized twice, had radiation; and while hospitalized the second time, even while receiving benefits i was given the ax. Sometimes there is no compassion, especially for employees who worked their hiney's off prior to getting sick or having a relative get sick.
I'm very sorry to hear about your father.
Sometimes, circumstances in our lives take precedence over everything else. This sounds like one of them.
More often than not, we regret the things we don't do vs the things we do.
Get your FMLA paper work completed, go be with your father and let the chips fall where they may.
Your boss is a jerk. No wonder she can't keep staff.
And anyone here who thinks you are winning points by picking up shifts - you're not. It's a business. They don't care. They don't care if you neglect your family, if you miss yet another Christmas, if your husband is ready to divorce you because you're so crabby from work abuse - they don't care.
Family comes first. Take care of your dad and don't spend another second worrying about work.

Found out yesterday that my dad has stage 3 oral cancer. Will have to have surgery in the next 2 weeks with chemo and radiation for 3 months. Will have to have a feeding tube for supplemental nutrition with any treatment and is refusing the tube completely so he wants no treatment and let it ride. He is healthy person for the most part, active and is a school teacher. So i am NOT taking this very well, i am a daddy's girl, very close
. But i am also a nurse and 100% respect his wishes. Call HR to get FMLA, notified my manager and guess what she said....... 'dont mess with my scheduling. we are already short staffed.' ummm....duh!!! why do u think i work some weekends and overtime since february!!! wasn't looking for a pity party! I came in the night my mom had a massive heart attack and i didnt complain!!! just venting....but when i get approved for FMLA here in the next few days, no one can say/do anything to me. my job is secure for now
