Drawing blood is not in the scope of practice for a CNA. As the other posters stated, if you are employed as a TECH such as in an ER, you can be delegated other activites, and I suppose in some hospitals that could entail drawing blood.
I work in AZ and our CNA's do all of our blood draws/sticks. The RN's do IV's but CNA's do the sticks. It was very surprising to me to when I moved here.
I live in New York. Patient Care Associates are able to draw blood and do EKGs in the hospitals out here. Most times, they have been trained as CNAs and took an additional course in phlebotomy. If you already have the certification, then, you may luck out by applying at these hospitals and producing your phlebotomy certificate. Elmhurst Hospital, Queens Hospital Kings, County Hospital, these are all under Health and Hospital Corporation...civil service positions. Good luck!
Hi, I'm a new CNA/PCT. Well I finished 3 months ago, but haven't worked as one yet. I was just offered a job at the local hospital (Chicago area) & drawing blood is w/in the PCT's scope here. Thankfully I am proficient at sticking thanks to an awesome 6 month phleb course. I feel so much more at ease know exactly how to stick as opposed to a crash-course & a Hail Mary. lol.
