Luckily your RN degree will give you a decent general foundation, so there is no rush to pick a speciality! Most students find themselves drawn to certain areas during their clinical rotations, and that will help you determine your interests. Regardless, the infamous nursing shortage is not what the schools would like you to believe- the job market is rough for new grads and most are not able to go right into a preferred speciality right out of school.

Your post leads me to believe that you may not understand how nursing education works in the US. You learn about many different areas of nursing practice, many different populations and ages. You do not specialize during school. You are exposed to it all.
THEN you graduate and look for a job that appeals to you. Hopefully, you find it. But things change. In my 38 year career, I have worked in newborn, adult and pediatric ICUs. And ER, and med-surg. And home care. And now, finally, in academia.
Concentrate on getting into nursing school FIRST. The rest will fall into place.

Not knowing what type of nurse you want to be before attending school can actually be a plus- you have no preconceived notions that need corrected. I went into nursing school thinking I wanted to work L&D or peds. Guess what my two least favorite rotations were? I had no exposure to the OR until my last semester. Guess where I started as a new grad and still work?

I only have ideas of where I don't want to work. I also know that something may click in me during clinical, even in a place I don't want to be, and I may belong there. I think going in with a clear mind is wonderful.

I'll offer a taste of irony here: I was only certain of two things when I was in school. Meaning, that I'd never work in med-surg or a nursing home. Guess what I started in and loved...? Yep: med-surg. Guess where I did a temp gig and loved it...? Yep, a nursing home :)
Never say never!

You will have clinicals in each area and that will help you decide what you like and what you don't.
