I wasn't hired because I failed the personality test???

Published

I had to take a pre-assessment for a particular facility. I aced the clinical exams, but did not do well on the personality exams. So they declined to have me interview. I can't believe that they would not even consider interviewing me when I did well on the clinical aspect. The recruiter was shocked as well. She said it is very difficult to find an experienced ICU nurse who is willing to relocate and take a significant cut in pay($12 HR less for me). I was shocked too and disappointed in myself because I think I am a good person with a good personality. I'm hardworking, honest, dependable, and a team player and I answered those questions the right way I thought. Of course I chose I do not use drugs, drink, participate in sexual harassment, and am a team player. So how could one fail a personality test? So discouraged. I've been an ICU nurse for over 2 years and I worked hard for my license. I'm insulted that they didn't even want to meet me face to face before they made their decision based on a test. Well, their loss is all I can say because I'm a damn good ICU nurse who is there for her patients and co- workers.

One of the nurses on my floor applied for a position at another hospital and one of the questions asked was "Would you give up a weeks worth of your pay to help out a friend?"

*** kind of question is that? There are just so many variables to that question it makes my head spin. Is the friend battling cancer with no medical insurance and going broke and needs a weeks worth of my pay to buy their meds?

Or does the friend want you to give up a weeks worth of pay to post bail for them?

Seriously ridiculous.

Unfortunately, this is another example of the excesses of a pure employer's market (wildcat days)! They are doing all they can to weed out people.... never mind they're throwing out the baby with the bathwater.

OP, maybe they didn't like your answers because they were "too perfect" and assumed you must be a liar? :rolleyes: Who knows, it's their loss in any case.

Good luck in finding a reasonable employer who deserves a nurse like you!

That article from market watch one of the posters put up stated up front the test guaged the person's response to customer service. I guess the old standby--I treat all my patient's equally--is dead.

I noted the plural of "personality examS"....

I don't know you. I have no idea what you're like, what your personality is, etc. So none of my reply is personal :)

Not using drugs, alcohol, sexual harassment, and being a team player are not personality traits. They are behaviors that are measurable to a good degree. Being a 'good' person says little about your personality.

Personality is harder to pin down. When I hear the word, I think of quiet & shy, boisterous, condescending, confident, insecure, and things like that. I'll see if I can find a better way of putting this- but I think you're not looking at the adjectives that are really "personality"....jmo :)

Found them :)

Darn, no one TOLD me that. Losers :lol2: :lol2:

This is the first I have heard of these things- WOW- hospitals are just BEGGING to be unionized. I can see for a PR person, or someone that is going to represent the facillity to the public on a large scale , but bedside caregivers?? When I'm sick enough to be in the hospital- I don't care if Atilla the Hun is my caregiver- as long as I get my meds on time, my call light answered, and no one screws up badly enough to kill me. I don't get admitted to the hospital to make friends, I go there to get acute care I can't get at home. What purpose these tests serve is beyond me.

The purposes are:

to make lots of money for the sellers of the tests;

to give HR another toy to make themselves look valuable; they've already got voice mail that they never answer, phones they never answer, lots of lingo, and on and on;

to terrorize and do a head trip on the applicants and employees who don't know what the right answers are and who never get feedback on exactly what defects the tests found in them;

to demean and humiliate the test takers;

etc.

In truth, I think we would not want Attila caring for us. Some staff are screwballs or truly do not belong at the bedside. But we don't need these tests to determine that.

I can see the rationale behind it, because how many times have you seen an employee not being a "good fit" for the unit.... when it had nothing to do with their clinical skills

Maybe they are not really hiring, and are just collecting resumes. You proved yourself on clinical, and failed a personality exam. That way, they have all of your info and do not have to hire. Therefore, should they decide to actually fill the position, or cut the pay for it even lower, they know you are competent, they "retest" you for personality, and then you miraculously pass. When they are actually hiring.

fwiw, we had an ex-HR person in our RN class. She failed out in term 2 due solely to smoking, drinking, and personal problems. And maybe they caught her charting those made-up VS instead of doing the assessments, too. Sad case.

Wow Kooky Korky did you hit the nail on the head about HR departments.

I also agree with ESME 12, soon people will be getting hiring scores like credit scores.

This entire employment / hiring business is getting more Orwellian daily. But always remember that ''some pigs are more equal than others.''
