You bring up a great point, when one immigrates, it is with the hope the immigrant becomes part of the community.

You what to move there because you have researched the culture and like what you read and desire to be part of the community. That when you come to work you will socialize with your co workers. Join the PTA and the church or religious association of your choice. That your motivation is to come to become the fabric of the community.

Alexk49, you're dreamin', girl!

From reading the original poster's comments, it's not about becoming a part of the fabric of the community.

Her goal is to move anywhere where there is an opportunity to make some cash.

End of story.

And is there something wrong with that?

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.
And is there something wrong with that?

Within reason No there is nothing wrong with looking at finances but you should also be aware of the country and be prepared to settle there not use it as a stop gap whilst waiting for something else.

And is there something wrong with that?

I work in a health authority that spent a huge sum of money bringing IENs to work here in Canada. We are in year two of their Visas. Our city is a good city with a diverse ethnic population.

The nurses on the unit have done their very best to help these nurses feel welcome. They are invited to all social functions (showers, leaving dinners, bbqs, etc). There has been one nurse out of the five that my unit hired attend anything or accept out of work invites (Xmas dinner, New Years, Easter). She is the same individual that volunteers at her childrens school.

One has broke the contract and is now an illegal in the US. The others hang together within their own group of IENs and have said that as soon as their US visas come through they are out of here. A few have broken their employment visas by working under the table for cleaning companies run by people from their homeland.

The best nurse is planning on returning home at the end of her contract despite the ties she's made because as she put it a two year employment contract gave her a chance to experience nursing in a different country before her children got too old.

So, yes, making ties to the community is important. How would your American community survive without volunteers and people interested in being there and making a new life?

To respond to Fiona, I hope your health authority will publish these results.

I hope that some nursing researchers will do a review of nursing practice in the USA and the variances delivered by the variety of nursing backgrounds. It has been my experience, when I look at our government web site, Hospital Compare that hospitals that have a large group of foreign trained nurses the quality is below the National Average. Of course this is not scientific information, but I believe a groups such as Health Affairs needs to exam this, That will settle all the debate.

It sounds like in your corner of the world this is true, it has also been my past experience too but that we back in the late 1990's when local hospitals brought is many foreign nurses and adminstration declared it a failure. Not one stay on in the hospital, the never connected with the community.

I think part of the issue I am having with this thread is the title: "I am from...to help..."

The phrase "to help" implies a degree of benevolence and selflessness not apparent in the actual post.

If the poster really wants to help, there are plenty of opportunities to volunteer with the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, local charities, etc. For example, after the 2004 tsunami, many people around the world wanted "to help," so we all sent money to the Red Cross or other relief organizations. That was a wonderful example of the whole world uniting "to help" others in need! :)

Perhaps this thread would more appropriately be titled: "I am from the Philippines...and I want to help myself improve my own economic situation, so where can I go?" Had the OP selected a more accurate title--without the feigned benevolence--I have a feeling responses would have been a bit different...

what she is trying to say is....she is asking your help with regards to relocating to whichever country that has demand for nurses....plain and simple. now, if you can't help her with that, then it may be best just to not reply rather than imply that the TS is in the nursing profession just for monetary gain.

right.

I can find no fault in them working in other countries waiting for thier US Visa to come through.

Their goals is working in USA, and doing anything and everything to reach that goal is what they are doing, and I can find no fault in that either

And that's the problem: for some reason, you just don't get it. :banghead:

Canada is not part of the United States. Canada is a different country.

When people go to Canada--and use it as a "stepping stone" to the US--it is insulting to the people of Canada.

Very, very insulting.

So, if you want to work in another country while you are waiting to go to the US, you should pick a country where the people won't be so offended by your behavior. :nono:

USA is known as the Land of Opportunity for a reason.

The US Embassy in Manilla issues about 150 Visas to USA per day, I would find a way to get to USA if I was a looking to migrate to a certain country.

Yes. Come here.

immigration \Im"mi*gra"tion\, n. [Cf. F. immigration.]

The act of immigrating; the passing or coming into a country for the purpose of permanent residence.

Why should Canada take nurses who state when all they want to do is work or " be a carpet bagger " until a better opportunity comes about. They have no plans on immigrating, in my opinion it is wrong to say you want to make a place a new home only to leave when a better opportunity comes about. I believe when these nurses come to Canada they are saying the are planning to immigrate

Kind of reminds me of people who get married but divorce when a younger and more attractive partner comes along. Many people feel this behavior is acceptable but to me marriage is a commitment and divorce is only when conditions are beyond the point of no repair.

Nah, Alexk, I see them more as the marriage of convenience type. They marry somebody for a passport, bring over there entire family and then Whoops, I'm just not into you anymore. (just happened to a nurse I work with)
