I am a second semester nursing student and I am dreading the first catheter I have to do on a real person. I feel completely unprepared to do it (I may feel better after I see someone at clinical do it on a real person). I know how based off of Sim Man, but sim man sucks! On Sim Man, his urethra looks like the opening to a cave (FYI, if a man has a urethra that looks like that he has major issues lol), and I could probably get a water hose down there if I wanted to. Sim Woman has the opposite problem to where you can't get the stupid thing in there. This is not just me, the dean of nursing could not get the darn thing in 'her'.

I know I am going to get to see it done on a real person before I have to do it myself. I would actually like to see it several times to be honest. I also would like to have someone watch me the first few times I do it to make sure everything is ok. That being said, the whole things makes me nervous as hell. We, as well as the patient, know that it is just something that needs to be done; but it is hard to seem nonchalant about it when you are nervous about your skills to do it.

My wife volunteered to let me practice on her. If I get the stuff do you think that may be a good idea? As for the male, I could always try and do it to myself. The point of view may be different, but it would give me a better general idea (and a bit more confidence about it).

My school has brand new equipment. Other than the catheter sim man is a great learning tool (NG tube can be a pain some times, but is doable). Any suggestions as to how I can get my skills better?

But if for nothing else to say - DO NOT attempt practicing on yourself or your wife!!!! The risk for potential injury is too great.

And not sure where you'd get the equip. STEALING from school is just that - STEALING. Likewise from an employer.

What makes you think you'll get to watch it done on a live pt before you have to do it? Maybe, maybe not. I know I didn't. While it may seem ideal to watch someone else place a Foley a few times before you do one yourself, you won't likely have that many opportunities to just watch in clinical. The best you can do is to practice in the lab & I think you might be able to find a few YouTube videos. (Not a bright idea to try this at home; just...don't.) Sure, that lab dummy's anatomy is NOTHING like a real pt, but the steps will be the same & you'll learn some pointers for the difficult pts along the way as you get more experience.

Seriously, if you know your steps & sterile technique, when it comes down to it, all you need is your instructor or preceptor watching to give a pointer or two along with an extra hand if you need it. After you've done it a couple times on your own, you'll look back at this & realize you were over stressing it big time.

Where would I get the equipment? I have already BOUGHT it. They came my first semester as part of my school supplies. The fact that you thought of stealing before anything else shows that someone made a mistake when they gave you access to drugs.

Outside of a quick google search, I was taught that people do it at home. Not only that, but when done at home it is clean and not sterile. Now if I am wrong with any of this fine. I have been wrong before, and will be wrong again. However, I made a post because I was worried about not doing a good job once I become an RN. I would prefer not to learn on a dummy (that did not work) before I do something with a live person. If it is the case that you just have to jump in feet first w/o seeing it done, that is fine too, I will adjust. Considering all of the countless head to toes I have done which are not a big deal, touching someone's private parts and just figuring it out as you go along did not seem logical.

True or false: systems that are sterile should remain sterile.

Yeah. Practicing on the wife without an instructor makes more sense than practicing on a patient under an instructor's supervision. Catheterization (especially on a female) doesn't need to be sterile. Assessments "are not a big deal."
