I am having a hard time getting into a Nursing school.

Published

Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for taking the time to read this. I am currently a student attending Queensborough Community College soon to graduate with a Liberal Arts Degree. It has always been my dream to become an RN and I am facing severe road block with achieving my aspirations. I am having a hard time getting accepted into Nursing schools in NYC. I have applied to York, City Tech, Lehman, Medgar Evers and Saint Paul's School of Nursing. They have all rejected me. Due to personal issues my grades and GPA suffered because of it. I started college off with at 3.3 GPA and now I am down to a 2.2. I failed A&P once and then took it again and received a C. I took A&P2 and received a D+ in which I took it again and received a A-. I have changed my studying habits and lifestyle completely to accommodate more time for school. I would really appreciate your advice as what to do and maybe what school's in and outside of NY I can apply for with a higher chance of getting in to. This has definitely taken a toll on my hope of being a Nurse but I am still trying to hang in there. Can someone please help me?

I don't live in New York City or know the statistics but I would imagine competition is really high getting into nursing school in that area. I doubt the nursing schools care about your GPA for your previous degree. Most only care about your nursing pre-requisite GPA. Most admission counselors I have talked to want As on all science courses. Please don't take this the wrong way but a grade of C in A&P1 is probably just not going to cut it. How did you do on your entrance exam (HESI)? There are a lot of factors that could be contributing to you not getting in. I would strongly consider re-taking A&P1 and maybe looking into nursing schools outside of the NYC area.

The schools I talked to were Texas Woman's University and Baylor University (both in Dallas, Texas). The TWU admissions counselor flat out told me to get As on all of my science courses and to have a minimum pre-req GPA of 3.0. The counselor at Baylor wasn't as blunt but I'm sure the same applied there.

The last group of admissions to the school I teach at took in had an average GPA of 3.8! (This is in Florida.) Sadly, you may need to change your career goals.

You don't necessarily need to change your career goals. Consider re-taking some classes, re-taking the entrance exam (if you did poorly), and looking into nursing schools outside

You might also look into LPN programs - THEN go into an RN program.

Count your blessings. Sorry, I just am burned out, I guess.

You will probably have to apply at other schools. Persist and do whatever you need to do to make your dream come true.

Or you might find another path just as good.

I will pray for God to lead and direct your path.

Look into LPN or ADN and then bridge to a BSN

....don't listen to this.

If you want to be a nurse that bad, make it work. Don't unnecessarily worry yourself to death about not getting good grades and not getting into nursing school. Focus on your classes and working toward getting good grades in your class. Repeat your classes that are sciences that are C's or below. Just focus on what YOU have control over not what you don't have control over.

Redo all your classes that aren't good, and work as a CNA or volunteer. Establish yourself.

Apply to schools outside of New York. Get into an ADN program outside of NY, work for a while and get your BSN.

Listen to Samist when he/she says "don't listen to this". People on this board can be somewhat discouraging even if it just them trying to be honest or realistic.

If you REALLY want to be a nurse, then take the steps to get there. Talk with admissions counselors about requirements. Re-take classes you didn't do so well in. Re-take the entrance exam (if needed). Consider going outside the New York Metro area. I would imagine those schools would be competitive given the high population and number of applicants.

Look for a program that only counts your prereq GPA.

You sound EXACTLY where I was over 6 years ago. I took went to QCC. I also graduated with LA degree. I mean I was gung ho in trying to get into a nursing program. I retook classes. I took classes that other schools required. I remember people around me would quit pursuing nursing just because it was so difficult to get into a program. But I never gave up, I knew what I wanted and NO ONE could tell me to change my focus and my goal. I finally got my nursing degree when I moved out of state. This school didn't take my QCC GPA but they took my gpa I recieved after taking some prereqs the school required, which was all A's. I was so happy to finally get started on my career goal. So you may want to look in moving out of state, if it is possible. Trust me, I know what you feel. DO NOT GIVE UP. Good luck.

I did poorly in my young college years but the Nursing program I transferred to only transferred the credits that I needed for that college. So the classes that I redid were only transferred with the higher grade. I thought I was doomed also when I first transferred to the community college here with a 1.9GPA they counted every credit towards my GPA. So don't be discouraged maybe there is a school around you that only counts the needed credits and the top grades. I now have a 3.5 and waiting for my acceptance letter for the Fall 2013.

I live in Texas and I know UTA is online and open to anyone.

WBU also has an online program but I think their clinicals are only here in Texas. But this school only counts the classes you need and the higher grades towards your GPA.
