I gave my first injection today

Today in lab, we started learning injections. At first, we were practicing on oranges and hotdogs....hmmm...nope, just didn't do it for me. So we asked if we could inject each other. Instructor said sure, just use aseptic technique and wear gloves. Okay, so we start poking each other. The first few times I tried the intradermal, I was too deep. I finally got it right on...guess who? Me! I gave myself an injection and with my non dominant hand no less. This from the girl who used to be deathly afraid of needles. LOL. I think all the piercings I have had over the years and all the dental work I've had has paid off...needles no longer really bother me.

Also, I came home armed with a handful of extra needles/syringes and asked my hubbie if I could use his arm. He let me do him and then I went for a longshot. I asked my 3 almost 4 year old if I could do one in her arm. To my surprise, she agreed. Her only comment was as the needle was going in, she said "ouch". No crying, no whining, nothing. So after that was done, I looked at my 7 year old, who tends to be VERY wimpy and whines about everything "hurting", even his hair getting cut. I figured he would run away, but to my surprise, he reluctantly said okay. He kind of whimpered as I pushed the needle in, but I don't blame him. That kid has really really tough skin. I had to really shove the needle in a lot more than with my hubbie, stepdaughter, or myself. But he was okay after that and recovered quickly. I'm so relieved that I got that part over with...I was dreading sticking a needle into someone. Now if I can just manage to convince my hubbie to let me do an IM on him.....ROFL.

My instructor said if the children were willing and I was sure to use proper technique, she saw no problem with it. I would never force my children into it. My 4 year old actually offered me her arm after I finished with her dad. I hope nobody thinks I held them down. I even told her that if it hurt, she could tell me to stop and I would. The only reason I did it on the children is to get a feel for how children react to having injections and what would be the best way to go about it. I figured out that distraction is the key....if they aren't thinking so hard about what you're doing, it's over and done with.

Nice work, but stay away from me!!! :D

I hate to be stuck...I'm a wimp and I admit it!! I don't mind the idea of practicing on real people as long as they don't want me to return the favor.... double standard, but just the thought of it makes me want to turn tail and run.

Maybe I'll feel differently down the road, but right now I want to be the one with needle in hand not needle in arm....;)

When I was a student we were allowed to practice on eachother, was not mandatory and we had to sign a waiver that we were allowing someone to give us the injection.

Congrats on getting it down pat!!!

Woa! We practiced on eachother, but we were never allowed to take syringes - let alone needles home! It sure would have been a lot nicer to practice on my husband though. My school says it is a liability on the school's part because a drug addict could get a hold of the syringe and needle to use it. What-ever! You guys are lucky!

Anyways, I gave a bunch of Fluogen injections on Thursday and Friday at my Primary Care Rotations.

venipuncture is pretty fun...ive stuck myself many time...including my feet wich I highly reccomend that you dont do that...it kinda hurts....but not as bad as I thought...i love going for hard and deep veins....nothing like a good challenge and I was usually 100% on target on all of them.......ego boost off now!

Congrats! I remember the first time I had to do it. SQ injections were part of my EMT 1 training for Epi. We did not even practice, the instructor just said find a partner and we learned on each other. Two years later for hte EMT 2 class he didi the same thing for IV's. It was scary but we all survived!

Hi everyone,

I think you guys are all so brave to be so confident in giving injections! I am in the middle of my nursing program and still very very afraid of giving injections. I only gave four SQ injections and can't even think about giving IM or taking blood. I froze one time giving SQ. And the other night I thought about injecting myself so that I know what it is like to receive a injection from ME, but was too afraid to do that. ANY advice to conquer fear of giving injections? I guess I am afraid that I will hurt the patient and afraid that I will hit a nerve or a vein and possible even kill a patient.

Just curious, what were you injecting? Saline? We weren't allowed to practice on people. So far I gave one flu shot last semester, and will probably be doing injections on babies this semester in OB - Hepatitus or Vitamin K.

I'm glad you're so enthusiastic, but I don't think it's a good idea to practice injections on your children. You have learned in lab, BUT you need an instructor around to practice on people. Your husband is an adult, so if wanted to let you practice I don't have big problem with it, BUT children are not adults AND they should not be practiced on.

I'm sure you are going to be a great nurse.

Noney

I agree with Noney. Children cannot give their informed consent and the 7 year old was reluctant to begin with. I'd keep to practicing on adults. And luckily, you have a willing dh! ;) Mine would run for the hills.

Congrats! I remember the first time I gave a patient a shot...morphine IM! That was fun....lol....and then you're like..."oh, that's it?". I can't believe you guys practice on eachother! Our instructor said we couldn't do that (which relieved me cuz I hate needles!).

When I was in school for MA we gave each other injections with NS. LPN no practicing on real people just the fake arm parts. IMO the schools should let you practice on each other so you can know what it feels like to actually stick a person and improve your technique.

Wow, sounds like you're a natural! I'm so afraid of my first shot.... that's all really, after that I'm excited about practicing, but I think the first one will freak me out to no end. I hope we get to practice on each other in whatever program I end up in, BUT there is NO WAY I'm going to be somebody else's first! I know I'm a hypocrite, and I have awesome veins so I'll be wearing long sleeves for a while. :uhoh3::uhoh3:
