I passed my boards on June 29th and I have my license. Granted I don't really have experience besides clinicals but I don't understand why I haven't even had one interview or at least a phone call! Everyone told me getting a job would be easy!! Now I have no money, my fiance and I just went and sold some DVD's but only got 20 bucks! And yes I said my fiance we are getting married in 50 days! And he isn't Mr. Moneybags good job just not a lot of pay. I really don't understand. I've called and checked up and I've got nothing. I've applied hospitals, community health, schools, physicians offices you name it I've pretty much applied. I don't know what to do I need a job ASAP. Any one have ANY advice?
Thanks
Desperate!
Michelle
Hi Shell,
I'm in NC and I'm guessing the way hospitals hire New-Grads here is the same way it's done in other States. They have "X" amount of New-Grad positions - people start applying for them as early as Feb/March. I was pre-hired in April - they know you can't take the NCLEX until after Graduation, so as soon as you pass, you notify them and you're set up for orientation.
Hospitals can only offer a certain # of new-grad positions because for each new hire, they have to have an available Preceptor. My hospital hired 80 new-grads, so they had to free-up 80 experienced Nurses to Precept each one of us (it's a huge medical center, so that's a large #, smaller hospitals might only have about 20 n/g positions).
Most people in my class had jobs lined up before graduation, but a few chose to wait until the end of the Summer and I'm guessing they'll run into the same problem you're having. I don't think you're not finding a job because you don't have experience (we're all "NEW", so they know we really don't have any experience), it's probably because the hospitals in your area already filled the n/g slots.
You said the economy in your area isn't good - have you thought about relocating? I'm attaching a website for a hospital in my area that's always looking for people (they recruited up in Canada earlier this year) - they offer a great relocation package and had a big sign-on bonus last time I checked.
It's a really nice hospital, they've gone to computerized charting, something I love. I considered working for them, but it's too far a drive. http://www.nhcs.org/sections/employment_opportunities.php
Good luck to you. Let me know if you check this hospital out. Take Care, Sue
There is a thread somewhere on here discussing this same issue....it gives some tips as to how to write a cv....how to present yourself to potential employers.... maybe someone that is more computer literate than I am will link it to this question. If not....scroll down the different threads.....there is one that deals exclusively with this issue for new grads looking for a first job. Good luck to all of you......don't give up!
Irrelevant. Why turn the question into something it isn't? My male classmates have done quite nicely in finding jobs that suit them :)
How do you know it isn't a male issue? Where you there when they looked over the application? Do you know the hiring manager? As every person is unique, so is every situation...including the hiring one's. Don't be so sure that your fellow men and women are so noble. I, in fact, was TOLD by a manager (not in nursing, but in an elementary school teaching position) that I wouldn't be hired for being male.

Every male in the class ahead of mine and in my class have jobs. In THIS area males have the advantage.
Now YOU'RE taking this thread to left field.
Well I can't really locate out of state so that doesn't work my fiance has a decent job working for the state great benefits just not that much pay and my family situation won't let me do that. I never thought about contacting the head of a floor though I don't really know how to go about doing that. Maybe they did hire the new grads already and not enough space right now. A lot of people say don't worry about it until after my wedding but money is really really tight now I just don't know if someone would be willing to hire me with all the time I'll need to take off with the wedding and all of what that entails. I'm gonna call on one position that's part time tomorrow for a PACU unit. Hopefully something will come of that. Thanks for the advice everyone!.

Shell, I never once talked to anybody in HR during my job application process. I went straight to the person I'd be working for and gave her my job packet (cover letter, copy of NS transcript, resume). I received an offer during my interview :)
I did apply online as advised during our job fair. Guess what?? I STILL haven't heard from them
Call the information desk at the facility you're interesting in and ask for the nurse manager's name on the unit where you'd like to apply. Make sure to get the correct spelling of their name. Then mail your application directly to them. Follow up with a neatly handwritten card asking for an interview if they're hiring. Make sure to send yet another neatly handwritten card after your interview thanking them for their time.
Good luck, Shell :)

Finally, 15,000 years after the dawn of civilization, we've eradicated bigotry and sexism. If you believe that, I've got a brigde in Brooklyn for sale, real cheap...interested?
How do you know he wasn't hired based on his gender? Where you there? Do you know the hiring manager personally? In fact, I myself was TOLD by an employer that I would not be hired because I am a male. Don't be so sure about the nobility of the human race.

Not irrelevant, because it can take several female nurses to roll a heavy patient or one male nurse. Aound here males get hired even before they pass nursing school. So the hospitals think there is a differance, or they wouldn't be hiring males faster and sometimes paying them more than females.
I'm not saying males are better than females, just that we are different and sometimes hospitials may prefer males over females. I can lift a 200 pound patient pretty easly can you?
