I just spoke to my mother who is an RN. She is telling me that I should not consider doing an online proram for my RN. She feels that you need a school based setting for obtaining the first RN degree. I have a bachelors in another field and am currently in an LPN program. I will finish the LPN program in August 2008 and planned to start Excelsior right way. Out of the 31 general education credits, I have all except for the A&P and Microbiology. My plan was to go through Excelsior for the Associates and then take start their MSN program for people with a bachelors degree already. My mother said her friend who has been an LPN for over 30 years failed the CPNE three times and it's extremely hard. I planned to attend CPNE workshops. This is my dream. I feel that I have wasted enough time already and this would be the fastest and most feasible way to get things done. She says that we young people want to rush through school. Hubby and I plan to move out of NY and I really didn't want to be tied down to a traditional school again after August 2008. I don't know what to do. I am the only child for my mother so what she says really influences me but I REALLY want to do Excelsior.
This board is so supportive. Any suggestions?

Do Excelsior and don't tell your mother.
My mom is the anti-supportive. I do what I want and tell her after the fact. And it's taken me all 54 years to get there.
And I'm in Excelsior. It's excellent.

You are NOT your mother's friend. You are NOT your mother.
You are intelligent, capable, and have a plan. And you will succeed.
My mother needs to call your's - they can talk all day about how Excelsior is not a REAL nursing license - that we are 'buying' in a diploma mill - that accepting help in the form of study guides, notes, suggestions is 'cheating' - and that doing anything online is the easy way out....
Yeah, right. I with this WAS EASY!!!!
You can do this - Time to disengage from asking for mommy's permission - And believe me....I've got many years on you and I still have that part of me that wants my mom to know what I'm doing and be my cheerleader. Doesn't happen in the real world. Love her - let her love you - but make these big decisions for yourself. You are the grownup now! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!

I'm having the same feelings like your mom. I'm an LPN as well, i feel unsure if this program is for me. I guess it's just my nerves, but people who are unaware of EC, tell me not to do it, I got a great clinical experience in the LPN program, I plan to work in a hospital as an LPN and I really think that it will prepare me for EC.
I guess i'm going to have to prove them wrong, and do it, I hate when I'm told I can't do something makes me work even harder. I wish you lots of prayers in your LPN program, are you thinking of taking NC1 now? If so PM me we could chat.

People don't understand that Excelsior is NOT the easy way out. You get credit for the knowledge and clinicals you've already had ... and there is NOTHING wrong with that. If you want to do it, do it. :) I know it's difficult to do things that parents don't approve of, no matter what your age is, but it's your life. *hugs* Hang in there.
Thanks for all the advice. I was planning to still do it and just don't tell her. Her concern is that the CPNE is hard and I will NEED the clinical that an RN program provides. It's just so hard to get into a nursing program in NYC and I want to jump on things while I in the school mode.
Thanks guys!!!

It is a real school that allows you to sit for the nclex-rn test. However, a few states will not license you if you have graduated from them. I noticed you want to move out of NY. I suggest that you check out which states do not accept them and if you can live with not working in those states. If you can, then go for it.

I get compliments all the time about what a good RN I am. Then I'm asked where I went to school and I tell them that I just graduated from EC in May 2007. I get shocked looks. First, they can't believe I just graduated and then they can't believe EC could produce a good nurse. I loved EC. It really worked for me. I was an LPN working in a hospital and that is what EC is really geared to. So, when you graduate, get a job in a hospital. If you want to do the EC program, then do it. If you are working, it is the way to go. I look at some of the nurses on my floor and they are working 2-3 12 hour shifts and going to school and doing clinicals in other hospitals. They are burning out.
You are a woman now. You are not a little girl and you are going to be a nurse responsible for people. You are going to be standing up to doctors and families and management. A good start is to stand up against Mommy.

I think it depends on the clinical experience you are getting at your LPN job. If you have plenty of situations where you can do RN skills then there's no reason why you couldn't do it online and do the CPNE. If you're in a job where your patients aren't acute enough to be exposed to a lot of procedures then it may not be the best option. What's your work situation? Do you feel like you get enough exposure to be comfortable without clinicals? Then go for Excelsior and don't worry about what anyone else says. You know what your needs are.
FWIW, my cousin got his ADN through Excelsior and works for an insurance company. He hasn't done clinicals in over 10 years and he passed the CPNE first try with no problems.
I just started my first clinical rotation which includes Geriatrics. I am on a grant and I will be working at a LTC facility for two years after I graduate so I'm kind of worried about my clinical experience. However, I will be getting a very good clinical experience from now until August and will jump on Excelsior as soon as possible and take a CPNE workshop!!!

Good for you. When you graduate from Excelsior your mom will be bragging louder than anyone about her daughter the RN. TRUST ME !!

So disappointed,
I have a daughter that is 33yrs old and she also takes classes online. I had major misgivings about a total online experience. It is relatively new as I attended a traditional school for my LPN and then my RN over 20 yrs ago.
My advice is to listen to your mother BUT check it all out. She may be right and she may be wrong. I feel she has your best interest at heart but the world is changing.
She may not be ready for it. I'm on this site because I have thought about taking a few online classes and I wanted to see what some real people thought about it.
Everyone has an opinion. check things out for yourself, gather as much info as you can before you make a decision.
Good Luck,
