I am having doubts..could this be for me?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone,

I have enrolled this summer for my a&P classes. The nursing professor at the community college said I was a shoe in to get in the program. My dilemma is this. I am a teacher and most days than not I dread going into the classroom with the kids. Dont get me wrong I am good at what I do I have recieved state awards because of my teaching...But I dont love it..there are days when my husband goes to work and he is soooooo excited to go (law enforcement) and deep down I kind of resent him for that. So when I see the school nurse or when I go to a hospital I am envious of nurses because that is what I want to do. But then I also look at it this way the teaching profession is great because I get at least two months off and I am home with my kids during holidays..what do you think I should do...

If you WANT to be a nurse, be a nurse. Everything else, like time at home with your children will work out. Nurses (from what I understand, I am not a nurse yet, waiting on my clinicals to begin this fall) have flexibility to be with their children. It sounds like you already know what you really want to do, you just need to be reassured....so ....." YOU CAN DO IT"!!!!;)

We are so much the same. (My husband is not in law enofrcement though).;) I haven't taught for a few years and am in prereqs for nursing school right now. I too hope am making the right decision. I feel like my heart is in the right place, I just hope I can handle it all. People think I am crazy for not going back to teaching, but I didn't love it and resented all of the physical work I brought home.

If you really want to do it, you will. Good luck to you!

I'm also making the switch to nursing from teaching! I actually really LOVED teaching (I taught high school social studies). I left my job 5 years ago to have kids, and now that they're getting a little older, I want a career again, but want something with more flexibility so I can be home with my kids when my husband is working. I was always torn between nursing and teaching, so I want to give nursing a try. I start classes in a few weeks, and clinicals in the fall.

Nursing is a great career to go into. Go for it. It is not worth being stuck in a career that u are unhappy with. Best of Luck to you!!!

Specializes in I am a "nurse" to my fiance who has croh.

YOu sound just like me!!! lol! I am in school for teaching (elementary) and I have worked in daycare for eight years. I started thinking about nursing a year ago and one reason why I can't decide is because when I have kids I want a lot of time with them. Your right teachers have holidays, weekends, and the summers off, but I too question if I really want to be a teacher anymore. Especially here in michigan. Everyone one of my friends that has already graduated with a teaching degree has had to go out of the state to get a job. Nursing is certainly more stable, and theres more flexibilty, money, ect. And I too always feel envious of the nurses when I am with my fiance at the hospital (he has crohns disease). I really want to be a nurse and I know I can if want it bad enough. I am really just scared about nursing school, and wether I could make it through or not.

You should job shadow a nurse, thats what I did. One of the parents at the daycare I worked at is a nicu nurse and I shadowed her and I talked to her a lot about nursing and nursing school. It really helped me. I went from thinking I could nevr be a nurse, to realizing a could if want it enough. And this nurse has a perfect scehule! She works two days a week, and every third weekend she works fri-sunday. Her little girl is almost never at the daycare! She has tons of time for her daughter. I know most nurses work three days, twelve hours each. Yeah you have to work some holidays, but I don't think I would mind. If you know any nurses see if you can shadow them for a day or night. All of the nurse on the floor when I shadowed were very nice and helpful, gave me lots of advice. They all said "If you can get through nursing school you can get through anything in life!"

GL!

YOU CAN DO IT"!!!!;)

Oh my lord, it's an ad for Western Career College! :lol2:

But PurifyMe is correct. One of the things we ALL do at the end of our lives is look back on the times when we COULD have done something and DIDN'T. This is one of those crossroads, luv.

Cheers,

i'm worried that you'll end up hating nursing because of the work hours that are required. nurses work holidays and weekends. although they are divvied out as fairly as possible, everyone still ends up working their share of them. i can't tell you how many thanksgiving dinners and christmas mornings i missed with my family because i had to work. and, don't you dare call off on one of these holidays if you are scheduled to work unless you want to see the defecation hit the ventilation and lose the respect of your co-workers. most places won't give you more than two weeks off at a time for a vacation, even if you have 5 weeks of accrued vacation time. that's just the way it is. are you going to be able to live with that? i was a supervisor and manager. most facilities have a pretty strict attendance policy as well. call off too much and you end up in trouble.

I've battled the teaching or nursing question for a while now. My situation is different in that I don't currently have a degree and I work in retail. I just had my first child and am returning to college this fall. When it came down to it as much as I would love to have summers/weekends/holidays off what is more important to me is that I always can find a job, will always have job security, and will be able to make a significant contribution to the family finances. I'm not so sure teaching would fill these criteria. I'll be working on a few more prereqs for the nursing program this fall. So just know that you are not alone.
