I broke my ankle

Published

i'm so bummed.

i just graduated nursing school may 10th. started working as rn-

eligible until i take the boards in june and then on may 25th. i had been working 1 week, really loving my department and then... i fell down the stairs and broke my ankle (lateral malleolus of my fibula and medial malleolus of my tibia).

it's going to take a minimum of 4 weeks before i can even dream of walking on it.

i was so excited to start working as a nurse and now i'm bummed out. i just want to cry. i can't even walk, work, or do anything. the good news is i will most likely be licensed by the time i get to go back, and they are being very understanding about it. but man, i really need the money now, and i totally want to start using my skills.

i'm so sad. i need some moral support. any words of advice to help facilitate a speedy recovery?

oh, just cause i want to share my heartache. some pictures of my sad ankle for your viewing pleasure, oh and the death stairs...

This makes me cringe.

I feel for you. Hope it heals without any problems.

And, I can imagine how disappointed you are right now about the job. Hang in there.

I'm so sorry you broke your ankle. Ouch I definitely know how it feels..I broke my left ankle when I was 11 and I also fell down the stairs! At least now that you are home getting some rest, you have plenty of time to study for boards. But I'm also sorry that you have to be away from work. Get plenty of rest and keep that leg elevated. All the best to you!

Hey, I am so sorry you broke your ankle, I am in the exact same boat as you, I just got my license but i tore both my peroneal tendons so badly they had to be replaced, I have been off it for 8 weeks now and just 2 days ago was allowed to weight bare as tolerated. Let me tell you that is not going well it hurts like hell. I don't even have a job, I had an interview and had to go to it in a cast. So I do know what you are feeling. Hang in there it does get better as this is not the first sugery i have had. Lots of ice and elevation. I hope you get better soon.

man doesn't it suck to not be able to do the job you've worked so hard to be able to?

I'm glad your getting through to the end of the tunnel. The light seems so far away for me.

I hope you are able to tolerate the pain better than I have/did/will.

The ER nurses pretty well hated me while I was there. It really made value my recent education and training and reminded me to not forget the therapeutic communication I had learned, as they had none, and because I knew that they had been taught it and should have done it, I was furious with them for their utter lack of compassion and disregard what was the most horrendous pain I had ever felt in my life.

one nurse even decided she had to tell me about the time she sprained her ankle and 'got over it' while I'm wincing and begging for pain meds that she refused to give me for over 2 hours! I know what type of nurse not to be, that is for sure!

Wow, some people should just not be nurses, I am so sorry that you had such an awful experience at the ER. It is amazing what some people compare things too. How much longer do you have to be off it? I have a fairly high threshhold of pain, but this one seems much worse than the last ones. I hear you about not being able to work. I worked so hard for this and it is so frusterating not to be able to work. I can't wait till it is over with. Plus it gets incredibly boring sitting around the house. I wish you all the luck, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Hang in there.

my first followup appointment is this Friday. I am going to beg him to put me in a walking cast then. I hope he will let me.

I read an article about a study doing early weight bearing, verses no weight bearing for the full 6 weeks, the results were pretty much identical long term. But short term, people were able to utilize their foot at early as 5 weeks, without doing strenuous activities. That's what I'm hoping for.

I'm sure the doctor will be thoroughly annoyed with me, but I am going to bring him the article to try and sway him in the letter me bear weight asap.
