I was a bad girl.

Grandmawrinkle was a bad girl today. Was in charge (ICU), they floated away one of my nurses away for the afternoon. The radiology suite calls saying that they need to give report and drop off a patient NOW that we were not expecting for another 3-4 hours (after change of shift, when we would have had a nurse to take him.) I declined (they only would have had to hold the patient for 1/2 hour.) She gets her NM on the phone. She gives me a raft of s#$%. She asked to speak to my supervisor. I told her she wasn't on the floor (which was true, she was off elsewhere doing something.) She got really aggressive and said she needed the patient up in the ICU immediately (not true, routine procedure, stable patient.) I told her that I would call the nursing office and see if I could get my nurse back that I floated, but until then she could not bring up the patient ....

unless I could pull a nurse out of my butt.

She told me I was unprofessional. I suppose I was. She told my boss :lol2: . I got reprimanded (with a smirk.) We really couldn't take another patient without another nurse, and she knew it.

I really try hard not to say that kind of stuff, but 1 time out of 100 something like that flies out of my mouth if my buttons get pushed.

Whoops!

Could have been worse, could have grabbed a beer & jumped down the emergency slide(hehe). I guess we all have days where we reach our limit.

Lol, sounds like something I would have said.

Good for you.

It wasn't like you were telling a lie. If someone isn't getting the hint, sometimes one must be direct.

People are way too sensitive.

GW,

Yes, yes. I see we are gonna be great partners in crime my new buddy pal!

:lol2: That's funny. I once had one of the girls from Central Scheduling tell me quite seriously that she was going to be undergoing a minor procedure."yeah, Dr. X is going to try and pull some nurses out of my butt!"

... and fribblet have I told you you are disgusting yet?!

my thoughts exactly.

Yes you did! I didn't know what I was until you told me. :)

I'm gonna rock the gross though. I just don't give a ****. (Pun intended)

I had a situation with CT dept. once. I was the end of the day and the day shift CT people wanted to go home on time so they were calling everyone telling them their tests would have to wait till the next day.

I had a pt. with sudden onset SOB, had been saturating in the mid 90's all day and now was 88%, very anxious and panicked. I got the pulmonary doctor on the phone right away and of course a spiral CT was ordered stat. Then:

CT calls: "This pt. had a CT a month ago, this is duplicate testing, we're going to delete the order and leave a note for the physician."

Me: "No, we are fully aware of last month's test. There is a change in condition. Are you ready for him, cause I'm contacting transport right now?".

CT: "Fine, send him."

Transport is busy, takes a few minutes to get there. Not there yet, CT calls again.

CT: "We looked at today's nursing notes and saw the pt. had emesis last night. Then he was still nauseous today. We can't have him in the CT room like that. We'll put off the test till tomorrow when he is feeling better" and of course tries to hand up quickly without listening to any reply.

Me: "OK (female dog) now you've ****** me off. Not only are you doing the test today, but I see transport on its way down the hall and he is coming NOW, whether you are ready for him or not".

Well, they quit trying to worm outta doing the test anyway.

My annual review that year said "Needs to work on being assertive instead of aggressive." lol I didn't care, and I didn't apologize for anything. Some people are just so caught up in their own little world and their own problems, they don't respond to anything else.

We've all been there, early on I would have gotten "bent" myself. These days I'll lower my tone and calmly say, "We're coming now anyway, if the patient has a bad outcome, think about what you're going to say."

Grandmawrinkle,

You were good right up to the moment the word "Butt" was mentioned, "But", I'll bet it felt good!

It felt good until she called me out on it (which was immediately, LOL!!!) I know better, really I do. It was the once a year screw up. And really, I wouldn't have changed the message, just the delivery.
