I am ashamed in myself

Published

Hi everyone!

I passed A&P 1 with a A and A&P II with a B. Although I don't feel like I have learned anything in A&P II because I barely studied for it and just kept guessing on the exams and it help that my teacher kept adding a 15 point curve to each exam (test average was usually 54%-67%). I scored a 75 on all my exams without the curve (except for th final).

My final exam in that class (digestive system) I did not study for it at all because it was take home and all I did was Google the answers and ended up with a B with no curve which boosted up my final grade to a high B (89%).

Same for lab, I only attended maybe 5/16 labs because attendance was not mandatory. All I did was copy from my friends labs and studied those then took the lab exams. I ended with an A in lab as a final grade as it was really easy to get.

So as you can see, I just don't feel prepared to start nursing school without much background in A&P II even though I took it this spring semester which I am ashamed of.

Same goes for my medical terminology class, I received an A but since it was online I never once studied for it but just googled all the answers and got help from my sister who was a medical assistant on some problems. This is why I absolutely HATE online classes because I never take them seriously or put any effort in them.

How bad will this affect me in nursing school? I was a 4.0 student but my GPA went down to a 3.84 this semester. I took these classes at my state university. Thanks.

Yikes. It sounds like you made some pretty bad choices, but it also sounds like your teacher did, too. A 15 point curve is pretty ridiculous, IMO.

So now, you have to learn - by yourself. I suggest starting here: Human anatomy and physiology | Health and medicine | Science |

Khan Academy and see how you feel then.

Good luck.

I appreciate you for wanting to improve on your knowledge. Nursing school is very fast pace and all we have is our competence and character to succeed. check out free online A&P youtube channels that fit your learning style. I wish you the best and congratulations on your acceptance to nursing school.

I'm so suprised how easy these teachers grade! I always take the best "hardest" teachers for this very reason. Usually those teachers require a good 2-3 hours of studying for their class a day. You can learn the stuff on your own just stay motivated (which is kinda hard to do when you aren't working for a grade). Good luck!

Exactly why I avoided online medical terminology for next semester! I took psychology online and the teacher didn't even make up her own questions, they were all online. :/

Anyway - I can't believe how easy your A&P teacher was, mine definitely was NOT like that. Someone in our class asked him if he would curve the last test and he LOL'd at her.

Yeah, I believe if it wasn't for the curves I would have pushed myself harder in that class.

I would also like to add that I took my microbiology w/lab class at my local community college and it was 10x as hard than it would be taking it at my university (or so I heard). I believe that my university professors make the courses very easy to make a passing grade in it and don't push the students at all which is why I was able to retain a 4.0. It also doesn't help that it's just a liberals art college with no nursing major so the classes are not as rigorous for pre-nursing students sadly.

In my nursing classes, they briefly went over anatomy and physiology. I honestly wouldnt worry about it.. You just need to know the MAIN functions of each organ.. not every little specific detail that they teach you in your anatomy classes.

Thank you for this!

I agree with what was said above. I recently took Anatomy and Physiology II as well. Unfortunately my teacher wasn't as lenient as yours was, I had to work pretty hard but I got an A :cat:.

Remember that other students besides those who are pre-nursing take these classes as well. Some students are actually A&P majors, and really do need to know very specific details. For nursing, you do need a good basis but you don't have to be an A&P genius. That being said, if you really do not know anything at all, I would advise watching some youtube videos! I really like the channel called CrashCourse, it has great animations and explanations.

Best of luck!

You didn't say if you actually got accepted into nursing school? Did you yet? I have somebody in my cohort who (IMO) must not have had a strong A&P foundation. However, they have struggled unnecessarily or studied longer on topics others already knew. My other question is, didn't you absorb any of the things you Googled? I mean yeah, it's not the ideal way of doing things but I bet you retained something... anything?? I'd suggest letting go of the guilt...odds are your classmates did a ton of googling too...and just move on. Do better from here on out.

Its not so much the outcome (weak A&P foundation) that will hold you back, but rather the thinking and behavior that lead you to take the easy way and only strive for the grade and not learning. If you havent really changed your perspective to learning rather than grades, you will likely have one of 2 outcomes in nursing school: 1) make the grades but not learn anything, or 2) not make the grades and learn nothing.

Because without a true desire to actually gain deeper understanding, you simply wont, esp in a bad classroom. Its less about the class and more about the motivation of the learner.

So this AP class will not affect you if you have actually changed your focus toward learning, because if u have you will already have initiated self-directed learning on the subject to make up for the acual class.
