Hurricane Sandy - Wishing Everyone To Stay Safe

Published

Well NYC has shut down surface, subway and rail transit as of 7PM. Schools are closed for tomorrow. Many if not most shops and businesses closed early today (to give workers time to get home before transit shut down), and persons are stocking up.

This looks like it could be a mess for days. Wishing all whom are on duty and or travelling to and from to be safe and careful. Those on duty hope you brought your overnight essentials as it seems many will be staying over at least one night.

Be safe not dumb! Remember even four-wheel drive is not 100%, and if you don't have to be out, don't go.

Be safe everyone!!!

Posted a separate thread but wanted to give a heads up: NYU-Langone's back-up generators have failed and they are now in the process of transfering >200 patients to NYP, Lenox Hill, Mount Sinai and other Manhattan hospitals. One assumes only those located above 36th street as the area below has areas without power.

The loss of power has also taken out NYU's internal telephone systems so management and staff aren't able to contact all or any family members as of yet to let them know what is going on.

About an hour or so ago stepped outside to see what was there was (we live on the UES) and saw a caravan of ambulances travelling down Second Avenue with sirens and lights going. It now all makes sense as one assumes they were part of the transport effort and probably had just taken patients to MS which is at 105th and Fifth.

Can you confirm that Bellevue Hospital has been evacuated?

I work at a assisted living facility outside of Philly. Have spent 2 nights with about 2 hrs sleep each night. Power went out about 10pm last nite. Was told by EMS do not call 911 unless life or death. Had 2 falls already. My husband home with my kids. I miss my own family.

Just woke up and am watching local NYC news programs which as you can imagine are all about hurricane Sandy. No one is mentioning Bellevue has been evacuated, just again the problems at NYU-Lagone.

Here is what a local news report is saying about NYU-Langone:

"Mount Sinai Medical Center said in a statement that two post-operative units would be used for patients transferred from NYU Langone Medical Center's critical care, neonatal intensive care and obstetric areas. Doctors and staff from NYU Langone Medical Center were expected to travel by ambulance with patients to Mount Sinai. "

Futhermore:

"Patients were being transferred to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center's Memorial Hospital, New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Mount Sinai Medical Center and the North Shore-LIJ Lenox Hill Hospital, said NYU Langone spokeswoman Lisa Greiner. Memorial Sloan-Kettering was expected to accept 26 patients, a spokeswoman said."

Now according to reports in printed NYC media the NYFD is saying Bellevue is or was having problems with their generators but the fire department along with others were working to keep things running.

"The New York Fire Department and officials at Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan, which was operating on a generator early Tuesday morning, were “working to keep generators running,” said Ian Michaels, a spokesman for the New York City Health and Hospitals Corp., which owns Bellevue. Michaels said the hospital was near capacity."

Gotta love those firefolks!!!!

I'm almost embarrassed to say that a lot of Cape Cod got really minimal effects-- some of the usual coastal flooding, 4-5 feet above the equinox high tide, very little rain at all, and some gusts to 90-ish on the outer Cape, but at our house, just some small branches down, the power didn't even blink, and our young adults spent a lot of the afternoon cruising around in a truck checking out the waves and wind (from a safe distance) at the beach. The old ladies greeters at the MallWart and the teen chickies at the Cumberland Farms were all at work.

I have often thanked God that I don't live in NYC or NJ, but especially true today.

Glad to hear you are all safe...didn't realize so many of my AN friends lived in the same general area.

I'm at the south end of lake michigan and the storm has come clear over here with 25'+ waves on our usually calm lake.

Trees down, rivers at full capacity, but we escaped a disaster, no doubt. High winds, but minimal power outages in this area. Schools closed for two days, but ok tomorrow. Everything closed today but my facility is open tomorrow!

Spotty power outages in Philly 5 county area with about 300+ trees down. Flooding minor compared to expectation as Sandy didn't linger here. Able to get my employeers home care agency up and running: had 95 referrals for home care processed today!

NJ bore the brunt of natures wrath:

Christie: Devastation at NJ shore 'unthinkable'

A day after the megastorm Sandy crashed into New Jersey's shore, the massive scope of storm's devastation became clear. Three more deaths were reported, bringing the storm total to five; homes were found washed off their foundations; power outages disrupted lives in all corners of the state; and landmarks such as the Star Jet roller coaster in Seaside Heights were plunged into the Atlantic Ocean.

Heard about the scope of NJ woes via car radio leaving office tonight. Suddenly this thought popped into my head:

Sandy was sent as direct result of Snooki and the Jersey Shore TV show shenanigans.

That was my reaction to a hurricane of this magnitude in this area this late in the season. I still have power in Boston and, fortunately, if I lose it I have gas heat/a gas stove. The news can't seem to make up its mind... one minute, they're saying "the worst has passed", 2 seconds later "the worst is yet to come." The latter seems like the likely scenario since the eye just hit land within the last hour.

They drive me crazy....I'm in MA as well.........I thought baseball announcers were bad about constant chatter....thank god for netflix...LOL

As a coastal NC dweller, my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

thanks....sorry for diverting from the main topic but i came across your fluid lecture notes and they have been really helpful. I was wondering if you have any notes on medication administration and nutrition.

thank you for your educative posts, they have been a great help to me.
