I'm starting this course next week. Anyone else taking it or anything that sounds a bit like it? I really am not sure at all what to expect but I know I'm about to find out in a big, fat hurry!!

LOL! You are definitely not alone! I think that the class being too easy actually makes it harder because (at least for me) it makes me so prone to procrastinate. I know I can blow it off until the last minute and I do, which isn't good. My grade in it is great, but I still feel like I am wasting my time when I could be doing something else. Oh well - at least it is one more pre-req down, I guess.
I agree! When more is expected of me, I work harder. When less is expected of me... well, let's just say that I have two journal entries due tomorrow and haven't even started them yet. Last time they were due I was writing one of them IN class! Hard to get motivated knowing that as long as I turn in something I'll get at least a B+ on them!

Hello! I am taking Human Growth and Development next semester. I would just like to know what you guys thought about this class? How hard is it? How much study time do you guys devote to this class?
Your comments are SOO appreciated!

Hi Lacy :)
I've found it to be a fairly easy course from the point of view of a Mommy, because I was pretty familiar with development of babies and children from reading books on pregnancy and childhood. Alternatively if you had younger siblings, did much babysitting or anything of that nature all that helps I'm sure! If you are very unfamiliar with development of children then it may be more studying for you.
The course covers "lifespan development" ... Birth to 2 years, 2 to 6 years, 7 to 11 years, and 12 through adolescence, then young adult, middle adult, and older adult years. Each of those periods is broken down into Biosocial (body/physical/relations to others), Cognitive (Brain/thinking) and Psychosocial (emotions and relations to others) domains.
The theories of major psychologists are also covered, Freud, Erikson, Piaget, Skinner, Maslow... etc.
I've found the Intro to Psych course that's a pre-req for a lot of nursing programs covers many of the concepts that Human Growth and Dev covers, so if you've had Intro to Psych or take it concurrently that also cuts down on study time for both courses.
Hope that helps!

Lacy, I think Cats pretty well summed it up. :) The course isn't too bad - there's a lot of theories that you will have to remember and some new terminology, but it is the class I have spent the least time studying for. It's not really my favorite by any means, but it shouldn't have you swamped.

We got our 2nd test back last night. I did about as expected, got a few wrong, though they were things I considered somewhat trivial. Oh well, still ended up w/ an A. Guess I'll know to pay more attention to the trivial stuff for next test. I'm still so frustrated with the pace, though. There are two chapters covering middle childhood and we barely made it through one last night. I don't mind the teacher stopping to expand on things, but sometimes it would be nice if she and my classmates could recognize that we have a lot to get through in only a few weeks and we don't need to hear every little, vaguely pertinent story from people's lives. If we had more time, sure, let's stop and chat, but we don't. Grr... I'm very curious to see how far we end up getting before the end of the semester.

We had a guest speaker last week who talked about eating disorders and self mutilation. (We are about to finish the adolescent chapters.)
I think this class is more interesting than the intro class was. It's easy to follow the lecture and get good grades if you have a good instructor.

I'm in semester 3 of 4 in the LPN program and I took it the first semester. Enjoy it, it's one of your easier classes (in my opinion) It was also interesting, depending on who teaches it. The theory guy's (Erikson, Freud etc...) are kind of a pain to learn, but other than that piece of cake. You'll do fine girl.... go get emmmmm!

Go work on your research project, kayel!!!
Not sure that was forceful enough, let me know if you need it in caps
My class last night was cancelled... grr. I have no idea how we're going to get through the rest of the lifespan in the next month. Very frustrating. Oh well, I guess it will give me time to catch up on my journal entries and start working on my paper.
