2013-2014 HRSA Nursing Scholarship Program

Published

I know it is entirely too early but I wanted to get a thread going for all of you who are planning to apply for the NSP this upcoming year. I know it is becoming more and more popular and there are always questions and people wanting to share experiences and such so I hope this thread will become helpful! I have signed up to get the alert for when the application is available for the 2013-2014 FY and hope to meet others who will be applying as well.

I am.. and they won't even defer my tuition until I have an official award letter. I called Monday and spoke to the hrsa representative and they gave me a case number and said they were going to contact the program specialist for my district and I should here something back in 5 business day.

Has anyone who received the finalist e-mail actually gotten word that they've been approved for the scholarship? I got the finalist e-mail more than a month ago, and since then, I haven't heard anything. Nobody I talk to at the Customer Service Center can tell me anything, either, and I need to pay my tuition soon. Anybody in the same boat?

I called because I'm trying to figure out financial aid with my university as well. The guy I spoke with explained it this way - if you get the email you have been selected for the award. The reason you are a "finalist" is because the secretary of health and human services must sign off on your contract - this is apparently a technicality, since they have already read through your app 3 times to make sure you qualify. He told me I should hear "any day now", though if you look at previous threads it appears that people didn't get "official" notification until mid September.

Same thing I was told in regards to the Secretary of Healthsigning the contract. I called my financial aid office and they gave me someoptions: 1. sign up for monthly payment plan until the money is disbursed 2.send HRSA an invoice (although I'm not sure who the point of contact would be)3. some employer repayment program where they defer your payments up to asemester 4. take out a loan and then use the money from HRSA to repay it. I'vedecided to wait it out. My bill just dropped yesterday and it isn't due untilSept 10th. I pray all this will be sorted out by then. :)

Sorry, the formatting is always off for me.

I have until August 30th to accept my loans. I'm waiting it out until then. Once that deadline starts approaching, I will call HRSA again and my financial aid office to see if we can work something out. I have a feeling I'm going to have to accept some of my awards and then have HRSA pay me back. I have a complication in that I have been granted a different scholarship that also requires a service commitment. I cannot take both. I do not want to deny the current scholarship I am guaranteed in favor of the Nurse Corps Scholarship until I am absolutely certain I will receive the nurse corps scholarship. I can just picture myself giving up my current scholarship only to have the nurse corps somehow fall through, leaving me with nothing.

Congratulations on being a finalist!! I hope it all works out for you! The fact that you have another scholarship also is just amazing! Best wishes :)

Thank you. The nurse corps scholarship is far more favorable, though the other scholarship is better than nothing. Here's hoping everyone starts hearing back soon.

I broke down last night and called before they closed. Was told that we will all hear something by August 31st if we got it. And if we dont hear anything, that we could still be awarded in September because there are people who are awarded the scholarship and then decide to turn it down for one reason or another. So... Lets keep praying and our fingers crossed.

Thanks so much for this info!

Got this from their Facebook page after sending them a message regarding the confusing awarding messages:

NURSE Corps

Hi, NURSE Corps Scholarship Program is in the process of updating the portal website to accurately show award status. This update may take two weeks to implement which is why we state that you may not receive official notification of award until August 31st. However, if you have received an award letter and signed the contract then you can expect that you have officially been awarded the scholarship and will receive the official notification shortly.
